United States

  • Allergy Alert: DeCoty Coffee Company (San Angelo, TX) recalls DeCoty Taco Seasoning (1.25 lb and 5.75 lb plastic spice containers; Item codes 71400 & 71410; Lot #010111-021313, inclusive) due to undeclared soy. The recalled products were distributed in Texas by DeCoty sales personnel and sold nationally on line.
  • Allergy Alert: The Muffin “Mam”, Inc.™ (Simpsonville, SC) recalls The Muffin “Mam”, Inc.™ brand Strawberry Crème Cake (24 oz; UPC 7-60366-00986-3; All lot codes) due to undeclared eggs. The recalled item was sold from March 19, 2011 to January 22, 2013 in the in-store Bakery area of retail stores in West Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Pennsylvania.
  • Food Safety Recall: Kellogg’s recalls Special K Red Berries Cereal (11.2 oz; UPC 3800059923; Expiry DEC 02 2013; Lot codes begin with 1,2,or 3 followed by KNC 105 00:13 to 02:30) because the product many contain glass fragments, likely from a single batch of one ingredient. The recalled product was sold in Schnucks, Logli and Hilander stores and may also have been supplied to other retailers.
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: Nature’s Variety recalls Instinct® Raw Organic Chicken Formula for Dogs and Cats (3-lb bags of medallions; 27-lb cases of medallions, 6-lb bags of patties, 36-lb cases of patties; UPC 7 69949 60137 1, 7 69949 70137 8, 7 69949 60127 2 and 7 69949 70127 9; Best if Used By 10/04/13), because pieces of clear plastic may be found in some bags and could present a choking risk to pets. The source of the plastic has been identified and corrected.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Reumofan Plus USA, LLC and Reumofan USA, LLC recall Reumofan Plus Tablets (30 tablets/container; Lot #99515; Exp. 09/16), because they contain the undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients methocarbamol, dexamethasone and diclofenac. Use of this product could result in serious and life-threatening injuries. One illness has been reported. The recalled product was distributed nationwide through internet sales.
  • Outbreak Alert: Alaska Public Health warns the public of a recent and potentially ongoing outbreak of Campylobacter infections associated with consuming raw milk. Six cases  of Campylobacter have been reported on the Kenai Peninsula since late January 2013. Four confirmed and one probable case-patient reported consuming unpasteurized milk in the few days before becoming ill; the sixth probable case-patient is an infant with close contact to one of the four confirmed patients. The outbreak strain has not previously been identified in Alaska.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Terra International Food Inc. recalls Rising Sun Farms brand Pomegranate Balsamic Dressing (354 mL; UPC 0 18646 00069 8; All codes) Lemon Thyme Balsamic Dressing (354 mL; UPC 0 18646 00068 1; All codes), Fig Balsamic Dressing (354 mL; UPC 0 18646 00067 4; All codes) and Raspberry Balsamic Dressing (354 mL; UPC 0 18646 00070 4; All codes) due to undeclared sulphites. The recalled products were supplied to retailers in Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert (Sweden): Sven P. Matkompaniet AB recalls Sven P. brand Kebab (400g; Article 6052; Produced 1/10 to 5/10 2012; Batch numbers beginning with 40 and Batch #41-02), Hamburger (90gr; Article 9090; Produced 1/10 to 5/10 2012; Batch numbers beginning with 40), Hamburger (150g; Article 9150; Produced 1/10 to 5/10 2012; Batch numbers beginning with 40 and Batch #41-09), Hamburger (200g; Article 9200; Produced 1/10 to 5/10 2012; Batch numbers beginning with 40), Kebab flam (Article 6032; Produced 1/10 to 5/10 2012; Batch numbers beginning with 40 and Batch #41-02), Kebabspett (Article 6015; Produced 1/10 to 5/10 2012; Batch numbers beginning with 40) and Lövstek (Article 6110; Produced 5/10 2012; Batch 10), due to potential Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) contamination. The Local (Sweden’s English language news) reports that two children fell ill in eastern Sweden in January after eating the meat, which was distributed by Sven P in Stockholm, but originated at a slaughterhouse in the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0187 & 2013.0188): Phenylbutazone in chilled horse meat from the United Kingdom; distributed to France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0189): Carbendazim in rambutan from Vietnam; distributed to Belgium.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0190): Mercury in frozen swordfish manufactured in Italy, with raw material from Indonesia; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0192): Norovirus in chilled clams from Turkey; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0193): Salmonella in frozen turkey and poultry kebab from Germany, via Poland; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Fraud Notification (EU #2013.0194): Adulteration with horse meat of frozen beef burgers from Ireland; distributed to France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0195): Norovirus in chilled giant capped oysters from France; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Fraud Notification Update (EU #2013.0166): Suspicion of fraud in relation to frozen beef lasagne from France, processed in Luxembourg, with raw material from Romania, via the Netherlands; distributed to Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (India): The Times of India reports an outbreak of food poisoning affecting 400 or more people, including children, in North Dimoria block of Kamrup (Metro).

United States

  • Allergy Alert: Associated Milk Producers Inc. (New Ulm, MN), in cooperation with Gordon Food Service, recalls GFS Lemon Pudding (113 oz cans; UPC 9390110676; Lot #3T12354C), due to undeclared milk. The recalled pudding was distributed in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: The Kroger Company reports that Taylor Farms’ Simple Truth brand Organic Baby Spinach (5 oz tray; UPC 0-11110-91128-5; Best by 2/24/2013), recalled due to Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) contamination, was distributed to Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, as well as to King Soopers, City Market, Fry’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Food4Less, FoodsCo, QFC and Smith’s stores. Wegmans reports that none of the recalled Taylor Farms spinach was sold in Wegmans stores.
  • Food Recall: Bi-Lo advises its customers that Manischewitz Coconut Macaroons (10 oz; UPC 7270000090; Item code 500728; Best by 8/12/13, 8/13/13 and 8/14/13) were recalled by the manufacturer.
  • FDA Enforcement Action: US Marshals, acting on behalf of FDA have seized tainted dietary supplements from Globe All Wellness, LLC (Hollywood, FL), because the seized products may contain sibutramine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in the obesity drug Meridia, which was withdrawn from the US market after clinical data demonstrated that the drug increased the risk of heart attach and stroke.
  • Outbreak Alert: CDC reports that 124 persons have been infected with a single strain of Salmonella Heidelberg (the outbreak strain) since June 4, 2012. Illnesses have been reported from 12 states, including Washington (56 cases) and Oregon (38 cases). The other 10 states have not been identified, as CDC has not yet determined how the illnesses are linked to the outbreak. Cases in Oregon and Washington appear to be linked to the consumption of chicken; these states have identified Foster Farms brand chicken as the most likely source, based on patient reports and the detection of the outbreak strain from samples of Foster Farms raw chicken.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Delft Blue, division of Grober Inc. (Cambridge, ON) recalls Compliments brand Breaded Veal Cutlettes (680g pkgs; UPC 0 55742 33693 1; All best before codes) due to undeclared mustard. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario.

  • Food Recall: Food City advises its customers that the manufacturer has recalled Sour Patch Jelly Beans (13 oz bags). Consumers wishing to obtain additional information may contact the manufacturer at 1-800-524-2854.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action: The Missouri Department of Agriculture halts custom exempt processing operations at Leinbach Custom Processing (Versailles) due to violations related to the business’s use of non-potable water in plant operations.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Yum Yum Food (Toronto, ON) recalls Yum Yum Food brand Sui Mai, frozen (228g pkgs; UPC 8 30121 10017 0; All codes) due to undeclared egg and milk. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety News: Canada has appointed an Independent Expert Advisory Panel to review the events and circumstances surrounding the recent XL Foods Inc. E. coli O157:H7 investigation, recalls and outbreak. the Panel members include Dr. Ronald Lewis (Chair), Dr. Ronald Usborne, and Dr. André Corriveau.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Carrefour recalls Carrefour (Engagement Qualité Carrefour) and Cultimer oysters due to possible Norovirus contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for additional details.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): The Prefecture of La Manche recalls all shellfish harvested from the Zone de depot de la zone de production No 50-14 Blainville-Gouville, due to norovirus contamination in oysters sampled on January 28, 2013 from the indicated zone.
  • Food Recall (France): Carrefour recalls Carrefour Lasagnes bolognaise, frozen (600g and 1kg), Carrefour Cannelloni bolognaise, frozen (600g), Grand Jury Lasagnes bolognaise, frozen (600g) and Grand Jury Cannelloni bolognaise, frozen (600g) because the products may contain horse meat.   • Food Recall (France): Findus recalls Findus brand Moussaka (600g; UPC 3599740007969), Lasagne Bolognaise (600g; UPC 3599740004517), Hachis Parmentier (600g; UPC 3599740004500), Lasagnes Bolognaise (1.2kg; UPC 3599740007983) and Hachis Parmentier (1.2kg; UPC 3599740007990), because the products contain horse meat.   • Food Recall (France): Picard recalls Picard Formule Express Lasagnes à la Bolognaise (300g; Lots #314/12 and 315/12; Code 57376) due to suspicion of the presence of horse meat.
  • Food Recall (Greece): Marinopoulos SA recalls Carrefour Lasagne Bolognese (1kg) and Carrefour Cannelloni Bolognese (600g), due to suspicion of the presence of horse meat.
  • Food Recall (UK): Aldi Stores recalls Aldi Today’s Special Frozen Beef Lasagne (400g; All date codes) and Aldi Today’s Special Frozen Spaghetti Bolognese (400g; All Date codes) due to finding horse meat (between 30% and 100%) in some samples.
  • Food Withdrawal (Ireland): Aldi withdraws Aldi Today’s Special Frozen Beef Lasagna (all batch codes/best before dates) and Aldi Today’s Special Frozen Spaghetti Bolognaise (all batch codes/best before dates) after the company’s tests revealed that some samples contained between 30% and 100% horse meat.
  • Food Recall (Sweden): Axfood withdraws Eldorado Lasagna Bolognese (1kg) Willys Lasagna Bolognese (400g) and Hemköp Lasagna Bolognese (400g) because the products are suspected to contain horse meat.
  • Food Recall (Sweden): Coop withdraws Coop Lasagna (400g) due to a suspicion that the product may contain horse meat.
  • Food Recall (Sweden): ICA recalls ICA brand Basic Lasagne (400g; all best before dates) because the product may contain horse meat.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU 2013.0172): Hepatitis A virus in pitted dates from Algeria, via France; distributed to the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0173): Norovirus in chilled oysters from France; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU 2013.0175): Chlorfenapyr in fresh papaya from Brazil; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0176): Salmonella Bredeney in frozen beef trimmings from Poland, via the Netherlands and via Germany; distributed to Sweden.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0177): Salmonella in dried green pepper from India, via Germany; distributed to Estonia.

  • Allergy Alert (New Zealand): Seafood Marketing Ltd. recalls Seastar Samosa (750g pkgs; Best before 20.11.2014) and Seastar Vegetable Spring Rolls (750g pkgs; Best before 20.11.2014) due to undeclared soy.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Fonterra Brands Australia recalls the following CalciYum yoghurt pouches (70g; All Best before dates up to and including 11 MAR 13) due to a potential choking hazard: Disney Princess Strawberry Yoghurt, Ben 10 Vanilla Yoghurt, Toy Story Vanilla Yoghurt, Cars Strawberry Yoghurt, Mickey and Minnie Tropical Yoghurt, and Wiggles Banana Yoghurt. The recalled products were sold in Coles, Woolworths and independent supermarkets nationally.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Australia): The outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to cheeses manufactured by Jindi Cheese Company (Victoria), now stands at 26 illnesses, including a third death – a 68-year old man from New South Wales.
