United States

  • Allergy Alert: Ryt-way Industries LLC (Lakeville, MN) recalls BIGS Dill Pickle Sunflower Seeds (5.35 oz; Best by 08DEC2012 and 09DEC2012), due to the presence of undeclared soy. The recalled products were sold at Buehler’s Fresh Foods and Tops Friendly Markets.
  • Food Safety Recall: RSW Distributors, LLC (Forest City, NC) recalls Seasoned Cooked Beef (Diced) Manufactured by Culinary Standards (4 x 8-lb pouches; Est 8318; Produced Dec. 9, 2011), after a conveyor belt is damaged during production. There is a risk that small pieces of the damaged belt may have contaminated the recalled product, which was shipped to institutions for further distribution to schools in South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington as part of the USDA’s National School Lunch Program.
  • Consumer Product Safety Alert: Bed Bath & Beyond advises consumers to return Dual Ridge Metal Boutique tissue boxes, Model #DR9M, because the product may be contaminated with radioactive cobalt-60. The tissue boxes were sold in Bed Bath & Beyond stores in the USA and Canada since August 1, 2011.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department (Michigan) is investigating seven cases of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses that developed during the Christmas/New Year holiday season. Four of the victims were hospitalized. The health department has determined that an ill food-handler at The Ambassador restaurant in Houghton, MI was the likely source of the outbreak.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The norovirus outbreak linked to Bob Chinn’s Crab House in Wheeling, IL has risen to 146 illnesses.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Viandes Giroux Inc. recalls Boeuf Haché Mi-Maigre (5-kg; Code #11DE21), due to contamination with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled ground beef was distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutions in the province of Quebec.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Novartis Consumer Health Canada Inc. recalls Excedrin Extra Strength Caplets and Excedrin Tension Headache Caplets (All lots with expiration dates of December 20, 2014 and earlier), due to reports received from the USA of chipped and broken pills and inconsistent bottle packaging clearance practices, which could result in the bottles contain foreign tablets, caplets or capsules.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall (Update): Toy Land Company (Vancouver, BC) recalls Heart-shaped pendants and plastic plug bracelets, after Health Canada finds that the childrens’ jewellery items contain lead in excess of the allowable limit. The recalled products were imported from China and sold across canada from 2006 to 2011.
  • Consumer Product Safety Alert: Bed Bath & Beyond advises consumers to return Dual Ridge Metal Boutique tissue boxes, Model #DR9M, because the product may be contaminated with radioactive cobalt-60.   • Outbreak Alert: Student journalists attending the Canadian University Press’s 74th National Conference in Victoria, BC were stricken with an outbreak of nausea and vomiting during the conference. The outbreak is most likely due to Norovirus.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Koh-A/S recalls Gold Vang Carrot Buns (Best before 19.01, 20.01, 22.01 and 23.01), because the product may contain traces of undeclared sesame.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): REWE Group recalls REWE frozen rainbow trout (500g), due to the presence of the unapproved drug, malachite green.
  • Contact Lens Safety Recall (Spain): Johnson & Johnson Medical Iberia recalls Acuvue® Oasys® (senofilcon A) contact lenses (Lot #L001RJ5/-2.00D, Lot #001RJ8/-2.75D and Lot #001RJ9/-3.00D), because the contact lenses were found to have higher than expected levels of a diluting agent.
  • Contact Lens Safety Recall (Italy): Johnson & Johnson Vision Care recalls  Acuvue® Oasys® (senofilcon A) contact lenses (Lot #L001RJ5/-2.00D, Lot #001RJ8/-2.75D and Lot #001RJ9/-3.00D), because the contact lenses were found to have higher than expected levels of a diluting agent.
  • Medical Device Safety Recall (Italy): Wright Medical Technology recalls Dynasty® Biofoam Cups due to a packaging defect that could result in contamination with polypropylene particles. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Chinese Medicine Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health has received a report of a case of aconitum alkaloid poisoning that may be associated with the consumption of a Chinese herbal medicine. The case is under investigation.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Gippsland Sprout Co. recalls Gippsland Sprout Co Mung Beans (200g package; Use by 15 Jan and 17 Jan) and Flowerdale Farm Mung Sprouts (200g package; Use by 15 Jan and 17 Jan), due to contamination with E. coli. The recalled products were sold through Melbourne Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market (Footscray), small grocery stores (including Inverloch Foodworks) and green grocers in Victoria.

  • Allergy Alert: Glister-Mary Lee (Chester, IL) recalls Hill Country Fare Lasagna Dinner (6.4-oz pkg; Best by NOV 21 12 Y18), due to the presence of undeclared soy, after a Creamy Noodle Tuna Dinner seasoning pouch was found in a carton that should have contained a Lasagna flavored seasoning pouch. Distribution of the recalled product was limited to the state of Texas.
  • Allergy Alert: Herbadashery LLC (Casper, WY) recalls Pine Ridge BBQ and Dipping Sauce and Pine Ridge Jalapeño BBQ and Dipping Sauce (18-oz or 34-oz glass bottles and plastic gallon bottles; Lot #10111 through 90111) due to the presence of undeclared anchovies. The recalled products were distributed through retail internet sales and in retail stores from January 1, 2011 to September 1, 2011.
  • Food Safety Recall: Price Chopper recalls Central Market Classics Tres Leches Cakes (5-inch and 8-inch) after Rich Foods (provider of the cake layers reports the possible presence of plastic fragments.
  • Food Safety Recall: Alma Meats (Alma, MO) expands its earlier recall to include Cooked Head Sausage (Produced Sept 15, 2011; Lot #1085211), after an on-going investigation carried out by the Missouri Department of Agriculture determined that the product may not have been properly cooled to ensure food safety during processing.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Bedford Laboratories updates an earlier recall to include additional guidance. The recalls, which were initiated on August 2, 2011, include Polymyxin B for Injection USP (500,000 Units per vial; Lot 1942980/Exp August 2013 and Lot 1895027/Exp June 2013), Vecuronium Bromide for Injection (10mg per vial; Lot 1865067; Exp Date May 2012) and Vecuronium Bromide for Injection (20mg per vial; Lot 1865069; Exp Date February 2012). Some vials of the recalled products may contain visible particles of glass.
  • Outbreak Alert: Ninety-seven cases of gastroenteritis have been linked to Bob Chinn’s Crab House (Wheeling, IL), according to Cook County Department of Health. Lab tests are in progress.
  • Outbreak Alert: Jimmy John’s restaurant in Valparaiso, Indiana has been identified as the likely source of a Norovirus outbreak that has sickened approximately 60 residents of the area.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Marché Village (Ange Gardien, QC) recalls Wrap au thon/Tuna Wrap, Sous marin de la mer/Seafood Sub, Sous marin trois viandes/Three-meat Sub, and Sandwich poulet pressé/Pressed chicken sandwich, due to the presence of undeclared milk, eggs and/or soy.
  • Food Safety Recall: Metro/Supermarché Oka inc (Oka, QC) recalls Sauce Viande Maison (1-liter glass jars; sold before January 12, 2012), because the product was not manufactured in a way that assures its safety for human consumption.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Bønnelykken A/S recalls Alfalfa sprouts (70g, 100g, 500g and 1kg packs; All best before dates up to and including 13 January 2012), and Spiremix with alfalfa sprouts (150g; All best before dates up to and including 13 January 2012), after Salmonella was found in a package of the alfalfa sprouts.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Spain): Spain mandates the recall of several dietary supplement products, because they contain one or more of the following prescription medications: sildenafil analogues, tadalafil, and nortadalafil.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0059): Undeclared sulphite in frozen blanched headless shrimps from India; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0060): Omethoate and dimethoate in gourd from Kenya; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0061): Mercury in frozen sliced moro shark from South Africa; distributed to Italy.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0064): Undeclared gluten in sweet corn snacks from Poland; distributed to Poland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0068): Mercury in frozen sliced swordfish from Portugal; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0069): Excessive sulphite in dried fruits mix from Germany; distributed to Finland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0070): Excessive sulphite in dried fruits mix from the Netherlands; distributed to Finland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0071): Insect larvae infestation in hazelnut kernels from Germany; distributed to Denmark.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0072): Undeclared sulphite in coconut juice with pulp from Thailand; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0073): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled anchovies from Italy; distributed to Italy and Spain.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0074): Milk traces in instant noodles from China; distributed to Norway.

  • Allergy Alert: Shamrock Foods (Phoenix, AZ) recalls approximately 7,500 pounds of marinated beef and marinated chicken products because the marinated beef product contains undeclared soybeans, wheat, and sulfites, and the marinated chicken product contains undeclared wheat, milk and sulfites. The recalled products were produced from Dec. 1, 2011 through Dec. 29, 2011, and shipped to food service institutions in Arizona.
  • Food Safety Recall/Alert: The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) warns consumers to avoid consumption of certain Fromagerie Marie Kade brand cheese and milk products because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The cheeses were recalled by the Canadian manufacturer (3903052 Canada Inc., Boisbriand, Quebec) after consumption of one of the cheeses was linked to a single case of listeriosis in Canada. The affected cheeses were distributed to Cedar Market (Norwood, MA) and Bahnan’s (Worcester, MA) and include the following items: Akawi Cheese (Best Before 08 MAR 2012), Baladi Cheese (Best Before 08 FEB 2012), Shinglish Cheese (Best Before 07 NOV 2012), Tresse Cheese (Best Before 10 NOV 2012), Vachekaval Cheese (Best Before 10 MAR 2012), Halloom (Best Before 01 MAY 2012), and Moujadale (Best Before 04 MAY 2012).
  • Food Safety Recall: Green Valley Food Corp expands its earlier recall of sprout products to include additional products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The company expanded its recall after testing of several random samples yielded Listeria monocytogenes. The recall includes Let’s Grow Healthy Together, Green Valley Food Corp and Broccosprouts brands of products. Please refer to the recall notice for complete details.
  • Food Safety Recall: Miller’s Cheese Corp recalls several Miller’s Shredded Cheese and Haolam Shredded Cheese products, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled cheeses were sold in Stop & Shop and Giant Food stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Kroger Company advises its customers that Wrapped Iceberg Lettuce (24 ct) has been recalled from affected Smith’s stores in North Carolina, Virginia, Eastern WV, Eastern Kentucky, and SE Ohio, due to potential contamination with Salmonella.
  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall: HimalayaUSA® recalls Organique by Himalaya Nourishing Night Cream (Batch #S691001 and #S691002), due to contamination with Staphylococcus aureus and fungus.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Safie Specialty Foods Company, Inc. recalls Sweet Pickled Beets (1L jars; Best before Aug 18, 2013 or later), after a consumer finds glass in the product. The recalled products were sold between August 18 and December 30, 2011 in Costco Wholesale warehouses in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Lidl Finland Ky recalls Harvin brand Pineapple slices (565g; Code L2312A1324 – 31.12.2013), because the product contains tin in excess of the allowable limit.
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Two wards at Wrexham Maelor Hospital have been closed to new admissions due to an outbreak of norovirus at the hospital.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): SA Sprouts recalls all sprout varieties (all Use By dates up to and including 06 01 12), due to contamination with E. coli. The recalled sprouts were sold at Foodlands, IGA and Fruit and vegetable stores in South Australia.
