United States

  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA releases updated retail distribution list for various meat and poultry products recalled on February 15, 2012 by AA Meat Products Corporation that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Franck’s Compounding Lab (Ocala, FL) recalls Brilliant Blue G (All lot codes) after receiving reports that some patients treated with the product have experienced fungal infections in the eye. Physicians are instructed to return any remaining product to Franck’s.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Canadian Food Inspection Agency announces the recall of Koh-Kae brand Peanuts Shrimp Flavour Coated snack product (230g pkgs; UPC 8 852023 665481; All lot codes), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was sold in Ontario and Quebec, and may have been distributed nationally.
  • Allergy Alert: Orque Tradevelop Corporation recalls Cup Star Shoyu (71g; UPC 4 901734 014676), due to the presence of undeclared crustacean/shellfish. The recalled product was distributed in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Whole Foods Market advises its customers that Dion brand Organic Curry Powder (36g; UPC 6 20383 02007 7; Lot 02B12G & 12A05G), which was recalled by G. Dion Foods due to potential contamination with Salmonella, was sold in Canadian Whole Foods Market stores.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Naturadif Inc. (Montreal, QC) recalls HD Life Style Hairspray Extreme hairsprays (500mL black aerosol container; Manufactured in Italy by Farmavita), because the product contains methylene chloride, which is banned as an ingredient in pressurized products. The recalled product was sold at salons in Ontario and Quebec.
  • Outbreak Alert (Ontario): Ottawa Public Health reports an outbreak of Salmonella illnesses that has affected 27 people, including 23 children aged 15 months to 14 years. Six schools and daycare facilities have reported at least one confirmed case. Three of the outbreak victims were hospitalized, but have been released.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Goodman Fielder New Zealand Ltd. recalls Deli Kitchen Classic Ham & Mustard Sandwich (155g; Use by 17/03/12 and 18/03/12) and Deli Kitchen Classic Ham & Mayo Sandwich (155g; Use by 17/03/12 and 18/03/12), due to the possible presence of plastic in the sandwiches. The recalled products were sold in service stations, some corner stores, some mini-marts and some supermarkets throughout New Zealand.

United States

  • Food Safety Alert/Outbreak Alert (New Jersey): The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services has issued a public warning after a pregnant woman was diagnosed with Listeria monocytogenes and analysis confirmed the presence of L. monocytogenes in a sample of Los Corrales Queso Fresco Fresh Cheese and Banana Leaf (14 oz; Manufactured by El Ranchero del Sur, LLC (South River, NJ); Plant number 34-0013669; Code date 03/16/12). The company has closed pending federal and state investigation of the facilities, and has agreed to recall all of its cheese products. Affected products include cheeses sold under the brand names El Rancero, Los Corrales, and Carnes Don Beto. They are sold mainly in Mexican and Latin American grocery stores, restaurants and other hispanic food establishments.
  • Outbreak Alert: Forty students and ten chaperones from a Kansas high school were treated for food poisoning at Excela Frick Hospital in Mount Pleasant, PA on their way back from a band trip to new York.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: PK Trading Inc. (Mississauga, ON) recalls Frito Lay brand Cheetos BBQ Flavor (88g; Red bag; UPC 8 801062 289936; Product of Korea) and Frito Lay brand Cheetos Hot Flavor (88g; Black bag; UPC 8 801062 380015; Product of Korea), due to the presence of undeclared milk and soy, respectively. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario and Manitoba.
  • Allergy Alert: Canadian T & J International Development Inc. (Richmond, BC) recalls Natural World brand Dried Fungus products (80g and 200g; UPC 6 948691 100064 and 6 948691 100071, respectively), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled products were distributed in British Columbia.
  • Allergy Alert: Quality Natural Foods Ltd. recalls Haldiram’s Indian Snacks All In One (150g and 350g sizes; All packages), due to the presence of undeclared sesame seeds. The recalled products were distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: New Food Classics expands its earlier series of recalls to include Best Value 10 Beef Burgers (1kg; UPC 0 71212 88103 8; Lot codes 72991 EST 761, and 82991 Est 761) and Best Value 20 Beef Burgers (2kg; UPC 0 71212 88104 5; Lot codes 53011 EST 761, 63011 EST 761, 73011 EST 761, and 83011 EST 761), because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled products were distributed to Giant Tiger and Northern Canada retail stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. One reported illness has been associated with consumption of these products.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): The Food Safety Authority of Ireland advises the public that Marshmallow Arsenal Pitche Moloko Vanilla (600g pkg; Product of Poland; Best before 03.05.2012) contains peanuts that were not declared on the label.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Heuschen & Schrouff OFT BV recall Tofu mit Chili eingelegt/Tofu in chili marinade (300g pkg; Best before 30/06/2013), due to elevated levels of Bacillus cereus contamination.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): Laboratoire Bayer Santé Familiale recalls Ultraproct and Deliproct rectal ointments (10g tubes; Ultraproct Lot Nos. 02093B, 04102A and 13114B; Deliproct Lot Nos. 02109B, 03134C, 12167B, 13174B and 14184C), due to an increase in the concentration of a breakdown product of cinchocaine chlorhydrate.
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Twenty-two guests and staff members at the Scarisbrick Hotel (Southport) were stricken with gastrointestinal symptoms that are believed to be due to a norovirus infection.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Saudi Arabia): Thirteen students were treated at Scion General Hospital for symptoms of food poisoning after sharing a breakfast supplied by a physical education teacher in celebration of their victory in a sport tournament.

  • Allergy Alert: Publix Super Markets recalls Publix Beef Stew Seasoning Mix (1.45 oz; UPC 41415-03608; Best by DEC 09 13 H), after receiving notification from McCormick & Company, Inc. that the product may be mispacked with brown gravy and may contain undeclared milk. The recalled seasoning mix was distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina.
  • Outbreak Alert (New York): Nassau County Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness that has affected “hundreds” of students at Barnum Woods Elementary School. Norovirus is suspected.
  • Outbreak Alert (Illinois): Norovirus is the suspected cause of an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness at Westfield Community School in Algonquin. About 55% of the elementary school and more than 40% of the middle school students have been kept home from school. Eleven teachers reported symptoms.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Sobey’s Québec inc. recalls Esc Poitrine Poulet Asperge, Roti de Porc Cuit, and Terrine Sanglier Moisson, due to the presence of undeclared soy, wheat and/or fish. The recalled products were sold at certain IGA and IGA Extra grocery stores in variable weight formats and also packaged at the store up to and including March 7, 2012.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (France): Chablis Gourmets recalls Chablis Andouillettes Roulaide Chablisienne (approx. 300g slice; vacuum-packed; Lot #10.06; sold from 15/02/2012 through 09/03/2012), due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold in “self-service” departments of warehouse stores in the Bourgogne and Champagne Ardenne regions. Stores in the following cities and towns sold this product: Brienon (Yonne ), Chablis (Yonne) Auxerre (Yonne) Vermenton (Yonne) Joigny (Yonne), Migennes (Yonne), Avallon (Yonne), Villeneuve sur Yonne (yonne), Arc/ Tille (Côte d’or), Perrigny (Côte d’or), Dijon (Côte d’or), Fontaine les Dijon (Côte d’or), Auxonne (Côte d’or), Chalon-sur-Saône (Saône et Loire), Montceau les Mines (Saône et Loire), Torcy (Saône et Loire), Troyes (Aube), et Chaumont (Haute Marne).
  • Food Safety Withdrawal (Poland): Polish health authorities have ordered the withdrawal from the market of more than 230,000 kilograms (500,000 pounds) of pickles, bread and other food suspected of containing industrial salt, according to an Associated Press report.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall (France): French authorities announce the recall of Dekang Liquid for Electronic Cigarettes (Pineapple and Desert Ship varieties) and Halo Liquid for Electronic Cigarettes (Tribeca, Coolmist and Prime 15 varieties), due to excessive levels of nicotine.
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Friarswood Primary School (Newcastle) remains closed while students and staff are tested for possible E. coli infections, after three cases of E. coli were confirmed this week. An additional 10 possible cases have been identified.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0351): Dead insects in frozen spinach from France, via Italy; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0353): Unauthorized azorubine in nectar pomegranate from Greece, with raw material from Turkey; distributed to Greece.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0355): Escherichia coli in fresh mussels from Tunisia; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0358): Suspicion of fraud in relation to horse meat from Hungary; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0359): Aflatoxins in corn flour from Pakistan; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0363): Undeclared peanut in Lituanica brand marchmallow vanilla from Poland; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0364): Salmonella spp. in meat meal from France; distributed to Italy.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0366): Mercury in cat food with tuna from Thailand; distributed to Italy.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0367): Excessive Enterobacteriaceae in salmon meal from Norway; distributed to Belgium.
