  • Food Safety Recall: Greencore USA (Cincinnati, OH) recalls Thornton’s Quick Café Chef Salad (5.6-oz plastic containers; Enjoy By date through 2/4/2012; Est. P-38518), because the salads were prepared using eggs that have been recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled Chef Salad was sold at Thorntons stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
  • Food Safety Recall: Allison’s Gourmet Kitchens (Moore, OK) recalls various prepared salads containing cooked eggs that were recalled by Michael Foods, Inc. due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled prepared salads were sold to retail stores and food service customers in Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Kansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, Tennessee and Missouri. Please see the recall notice for a detailed list of affected items, which were sold under the brand names Deli Fresh, Hill Country Fare, Brookshire’s, Allison’s Gourmet Kitchens, Food Lion, Bakers Kitchens, Dot Foods, Produce House, Hannaford Brothers, and Chef Prepared.
  • Food Safety Recall: GH Foods SW (Houston, TX) recalls Fresh Garden Highway Cobb Salad (7.5-oz plastic containers; Sell By dates through 2/6/2012), because the salads were prepared using eggs that have been recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled Cobb Salads were sold at Kroger Stores in Texas.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Bedford Laboratories (Bedford, OH) recalls Acetylcysteine Solution, USP (Manufactured for Roxane Laboratories, Inc.) 20% (30mL/vial; Lot 1877093; Exp. June 2013), after a glass particle was found in a single vial.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Alert: Pedinol Pharmacal Inc. announces health advisory for Gris-PEG (griseofulvin ultramicrosize) 125mg and 250mg, which was packaged for Pedinol by Novartis Consumer Health in Lincoln, Nebraska. Pedinol advises healthcare professionals, pharmacists and patients that, due to problems occurring when the Gris-PEG was packaged and labeled, tablets from one product type may have carried over into packaging of another product. This could result in a stray pill of one medicine ending up in the bottle of another product.   • Outbreak Alert Update: The number of people sickened by Campylobacter after drinking raw milk from The Family Cow dairy farm has risen to 35 confirmed cases in Pennsylvania (28), Maryland (4) and New Jersey (1), according to a report released by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Maryland has found the pathogen in two bottles of raw milk produced at the farm. The Family Cow dairy farm voluntarily suspended sale of milk on January 31st, and health departments are advising consumers to discard any raw milk purchased from the dairy since January 1, 2012.
  • Outbreak Alert: The South Dakota Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of diarrhea – suspected to be food-related – linked to a Tuesday evening boys’ high school basketball game in Pierre.
  • Outbreak Alert: South Carolina health officials are investigating a suspected norovirus outbreak at the Lila Doyle Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Facility in Oconee County. The nursing home, which has been closed to new admissions until the outbreak has been contained, is owned and operated by the Oconee Medical Center.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. recalls Kirkland Signature Banana Loaves, Red Velvet Cupcakes, and Mix and Match Muffins (Best before February 4th, 2012), because the products may contain pieces of white plastic. The recalled baked goods were produced in the East Winnipeg Costco warehouse between January 31st and February 1st, 2012 inclusive. Baked goods produced at other Costco locations are not affected by this recall.
  • Food Safety Recall: New Horizon Co-Operative Ltd. recalls Co-op Lean Ground Beef Ground from Canadian Trim (various weight packages; Packed JA 11, 12) due to contamination with unspecified extraneous matter. The recalled ground beef was distributed in Alberta.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Myanmar): More than 30 children at the Pajau Refugee Camp in Kachin have contracted cholera and one child has died., according to workers with the Relief Action Network for IDP and Refugees. Children and the elderly in other camps along the Sino-Burmese border also have been affected. The refugee camps lack both adequate safe drinking water and toilet facilities. The total number of people suffering from cholera is not known.
  • Outbreak Alert (Angola): The municipality of Massangano Cambambe has been hit with an outbreak of cholera-like diarrheal illness. Thirteen people were hospitalized.

Latin America and the Caribbean

  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Argentina): The Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria ordered the seizure and destruction of 1,340 kilograms of ham in San Fernando (Buenos Aires Province), after determining that the package labels were counterfeit, rendering the products unfit for human consumption.
  • Outbreak Alert (Mexico): Health authorities have quarantined two schools in Altamira (Tamaulipas), after two cases of hepatitis A were confirmed. Additional cases are under investigation.

  • Allergy Alert: General Mills recalls Chocolate flavor Fiber One 90-Calorie Chewy Bars (5-count boxes; Better If Used By 19MAY2012BV), because a packaging error may have resulted in the presence of undeclared peanuts.
  • Food Safety Recall: Larry Schultz Organic Farm recalls Lunds & Byerly’s Organic, Kowalski’s Organic, and Larry Schultz Organic Farm brands of organic shell eggs due to possible contamination with Salmonella Entertitidis. The eggs are linked epidemiologically to six cases of Salmonella Enteritidis in Minnesota. The recalled eggs were distributed to restaurants, grocery stores, food wholesalers and foodservice companies in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.   • Food Safety Recall: Taylor Farms Retail Inc. recalls various salad blends after a random test by the Washington Department of Agriculture finds Salmonella in a sample of packaged spinach. The recalled products include: 10-oz bags of Fresh Selections Hearts of Romaine, Leafy Romaine, Field of Greens and Romaine Blend (Best by 10-18-11); HEB Spring Mix (5-oz bag; Best by 10-20-11), Marketside Fresh Spinach (10-oz bag; Guaranteed Delicious by 10-21-11), Caesar Salad Kit (14.6-oz bag; Guaranteed Delicious by 10-19-11), Asian Salad Kit (15-oz bag; Guaranteed Delicious by 10-19-11), Southwest Salad Kit (15-oz bag; Guaranteed Delicious by 10-19-11), Premium Romaine (9-oz bag; Guaranteed Delicious by 10-19-11), and Premium Romaine Family (18-oz bag; Guaranteed Delicious by 10-19-11), and Taylor Farms Field Greens (8-oz bag; Best If Used By 10-20-11). The recalled salad blends were distributed in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Puerto Rico, and sold in various supermarkets, including HEB, Walmart, and the following Kroger stores: Fred Meyer, King Soopers, City Market, Food4Less, FoodsCo, Ralphs, Fry’s and QFC stores.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: ITFC Importers & Distributors recalls (no English brand name) Classic Marshmallow (500g) and Sweets Cherry (200g), due to the presence of unspecified chemical additives. The brand name is shown in Ukranian only on the package.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert: Sandwell Foods recalls Halal World lamb sausages, Halal World beef sausages, Halal World Spicy lamb burgers and Halal World Spicy beef burgers (Use by 21 October 2011), due to the possible presence of undeclared wheat gluten, soy, sulphites, celery and mustard as a result of incorrect labeling.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): Carrefour recalls Rillettes de Canard/Minced Duck Spread (180g; Lot #096C1 and E096E2; Best if used by 06/04/2015), due to the possible presence of glass particles.
  • Outbreak Alert (Estonia): An outbreak of hepatitis A infections has been detected in Viljandi County, Estonia. Between August 4th and October 3rd, 66 cases have been confirmed in the county. The modes of transmission are thought to be environmental exposure and person-to-person transmission. A case-control study is in the planning stages to identify possible common risk factors.

  • Allergy Alert: NOW Foods recalls Brewer’s Yeast Tablets, 10 grain, 650 mg, 200 tablets/bottle (Product code 2410; Lot #1334119, 1354098, and 1362375), and 500 tablets/bottle (Product code 2412; Lot #1347607, 1334773, and 1358774), due to the presence of undeclared milk allergen. The recalled Brewer’s Yeast Tablets were distributed throughout the USA and exported to other countries.
  • Food Safety Recall: Giant Eagle recalls several Giant Eagle Deli Sandwich Rings (Large Italian, Mini Italian, Large New York, Mini New York, Large All American, Mini All American; All outstanding lots), because the lettuce used in the sandwich rings may be contaminated with Listeria.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Marché de La Rousselière inc (dba Metro Plus, Montreal, QC) recalls Banana Cake, Maple & Nut Cake and 4-Quart Cake, because the cakes may contain undeclared milk, nuts and/or sulfites.
  • Allergy Alert: Global Trading Network Ltd. recalls numerous kimchi products due to the presence of undeclared allergens, including fish, crustacean/shellfish and sesame seeds. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products, which were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba.
  • Allergy Alert: Mr. Croquette recalls Pre-fried Nasi-Hapjes (Rice Patties), Pre-fried Bami-Hapjes (Noodle Patties), Regular Nasi-Hapjes, and Regular Bami-Hapjes (4 or bulk count; All codes), due to the presence of undeclared milk, soy and wheat. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Hygaard Fine Foods (Est 318; Sherwood Park, Alberta) recalls Hygaard Mini Sub Sandwiches (130g pkgs; Best before OCT 21), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled sandwiches were distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nunavut and Yukon Territories.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (South Korea): The Food and Drug Administration recalls Homeplus and Private Brand Red Pepper, because Clostridium perfringens was detected in the product.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a fatal case of Vibrio vulnificus infection involving a 59-year old may with chronic illnesses.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Public Health Alert (Australia): South Australia Health issued a public health alert after being notified that a food handler at the Yakatori Takumi restaurant on Melbourne Street in North Adelaide has been diagnosed with Hepatitis A. Patrons who ate at the restaurant between September 21st and October 4th may have been exposed to possible Hepatitis A virus infection.

Latin America and the Caribbean

  • Cosmetic Product Safety Alert (Mexico & Colombia): Mexico’s Federal Health Authority has seized raw material and suspended the manufacture of Aguamary Face and Eye Cream by Aguaruto Cosmetics, after detecting high levels of mercury in the cosmetic cream.
