  • Food Safety Recall: Glatt’s Kosher Meat Products (Montreal, QC) recalls Glatt’s Beef Frankfurters Jumbo BBQ (375g packages; UPC 0 55627 00203 6; Best Before date of 12AL21), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled Beef Frankfurters were distributed in Quebec and Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Charcuterie La Tour Eiffel Inc. recalls La Belle Bretagne brand Our Cooked Ham – Original (Variable kg; Best before 12AL14 or 12AL21), La Belle Bretagne brand Sliced Cooked Ham (Variable kg; Best before 12AL01), La Belle Bretagne brand Our Cooked Ham – Original Sliced (175g; Best before 12MR30), Tour Eiffel Cooked Ham – Extra Lean (Variable kg; Lot 271), Tour Eiffel Parisian Cooked Ham (175g; Best before 12MR31), Tour Eiffel Shaved Parisian Cooked Ham (175g and 400g; Best before 12MR20 or 12MR21), and Tour Eiffel Chopped Cooked Ham (400g; Best before 12MR16), due to contamination with Clostridium perfringens. The recalled products were supplied to retailers, and to hotels, restaurants, and institutions in Quebec.

Europe

  • Food Safety Withdrawal (UK): B&M Sausages withdraws the following meat products in Scotland, due to inadequate disinfection of food contact surfaces between raw and ready-to-eat foods, resulting in potential cross-contamination with pathogenic bacteria: Wiejka Sausage, Szynka Poledwica, Boczek Rdowany, Zwyczajna, Firmova, Szynkowa, Kabanos, Schab Rolonkiny, Krakowska, Biala, Przysmak Swietokrzyski, Parowkova, Pasztetowa, Frankfurterki, Salceson, Zeberka Wedzone, Boczek, Kaszanka, Blgosowka, Rolada Pieczen, Karczek Pieczony, and Boczek Pieczony (produced up to and including 1 March 2012).
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Spain): AEMPS mandates the recall of L-5HTP (60 capsules; 1000mg/capsule), because the product contains the unauthorized active ingredient L-5 hydroxytriptophan
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): The Royal Lancaster Infirmary (Lancashire) has banned visitors from nine wards in an effort to contain an outbreak of norovirus at the hospital.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0319): Shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli in onion mettwurst sausage from Germany; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0320): Cadmium in frozen ribbonfish from India; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0321): Dicofol and oxamyl in green beans from Morocco, via Spain; distributed to Germany.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0322): Undeclared milk ingredient in dark chocolate spread from Belgium; distributed to Andorra, France and Spain.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): The Reject Shop Ltd. recalls Snack Stacks Potato Crisps Barbeque (160g cardboard tube; Product of China; All best before dates up to and including 20/02/2012), due to the presence of undeclared whey, a milk protein. The recalled product was sold in The Reject Shop retail stores across Australia.
  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Vitaco Health (NZ) Limited recalls Healtheries Kidscare Rice Wheels-Cheese-Sour Cream & Chives-Burger (All pack sizes; All Best before dates up to and including 24/11/12) and Healtheries Wiggles Ricey Bites-Cheese-Tomato (All pack sizes; All Best before dates up to and including 24/11/12), due to possible contamination with glass particles. The recalled products were sold in Supermarkets and Health Stores across New Zealand.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Vitaco Health Australia recalls Healtheries Kidscare Rice Wheels Roast Chicken (10 x 18g packets; Best before dates up to and including 4/01/13), Healtheries Kidscare Rice Wheels Burger (10 x 18g packets; Best before dates up to and including 4/01/13), Healtheries Kidscare Rice Wheels Cheese (10 x 18g packets; Best before dates up to and including 4/01/13) and Healtheries Wiggles Ricey Bites Cheese (8 x 15g packets; Best before dates up to and including 4/01/13), due to contamination with foreign matter (glass). The recalled products were imported from Indonesia and sold online and nationally at Coles, Woolworths, Safeway, The Reject Shop, IGA and other independent supermarkets.
  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): At least 19 cases of hepatitis A infections have been confirmed in Auckland, including a cluster of cases involving school-age children. The source of the outbreak is unknown.

United States

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Recall: McNeil Consumer Healthcare recalls Infants’ TYLENOL® Oral Suspension, 1 oz Grape (UPC 300450122308; Lot Nos. BIL0U00, BIL0V00, BIL3500, BJL2D00, BJL2E00, BJL2T00, BJL2U00) after receiving a small number of complaints from consumers who reported difficulty using the Infants’ TYLENOL® SimpleMeasure™ dosing system. SimpleMeasure™ includes a dosing syringe, which a parent or caregiver inserts into a protective cover, or “flow restrictor,” at the top of the bottle to measure the proper dose. In some cases, the flow restrictor was pushed into the bottle when inserting the syringe. Children’s TYLENOL® products are intended for children two years of age and older and remain available. Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Ilana Robyn Foods Ltd. (Toronto, ON) recalls Sweets From The Earth Spiced Carrot Cake (100g; UPC 855144001037; Best before dates up to and including Feb 27, 2012), because the product contains undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed in Quebec and Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: I.M.U.R. Chef (Saint-Laurent, QC) recalls Bean & Barley Soup, Cabbage Soup, Pea Soup, Matza Ball Soup, and Chicken Soup, due to the presence of undeclared wheat. The Matza Ball Soup and Chicken Soup also contain undeclared egg.
  • Outbreak Alert: Peel County (Ontario) Public Health is warning patrons of Harvey’s restaurant at 6430 Erin Mills Parkway, Mississauga that an employee working at that location was diagnosed with Hepatitis A. Consumers who purchased food from this Harvey’s outlet on January 28th or 29th, or February 4th or 5th may have been exposed to Hepatitis A.

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Rieber & Son Denmark A/S recalls Rema1000 Remoulade (400g, Lot #L33; Expiry 1/6-2012), due to inadvertent mislabeling, which does not declared the presence of onions, cabbage and spices.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Vitaline SA recalls CEVAL Healthfood brand Fibryn Biscuits au son sans sucre (Lot #118011; Best if used by 30/08/2012), due to visible mold growth.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Nordic Egg Ltd. recalls Whole Eggs, Grade A, Medium (53-63g; Product of Poland; Expiry 28/2-2012; individual eggs stamped with the code 3PL30221304), because Salmonella enteritidis was found in a sample of the eggs.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Messrs. Hans Adler OHG recalls Black Forest Garlic Sausage (approx 900g ring; Best before 03/11/2012), due to the presence of a metallic foreign body.
  • Food Safety Alert (Greece): Evrofarma SA announces the temporary suspension of production of Promel yogurt, to allow for investigation of complaints of mold growth in Promel 2% yogurt. The company is cooperating with EFET to determine and correct the source of the problem.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Denmark): Abigo Pharma A/S recalls Bronikyl Food Supplement, produced by Propharma A/S (250ml; Best before 12-2012), because the supplement contains non-permitted paraben preservatives.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0249): Salmonella typhimurium in chilled chicken from France; distributed to France and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0250): Imazalil in oranges from Morocco; distributed to Sweden.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.0253): Unauthorized sildenafil thiono analogue in food supplement from Greece; distributed to Spain.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0255): Escherichia coli in frozen pangasius fillets from Vietnam; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0256): Salmonella Weltevreden in fresh pre-packed acacia from Thailand; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0257): Norovirus in oysters from France; distributed to Denmark.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0260): Excessive sulphite in frozen shrimps from China, via Italy; distributed to Malta.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0261): Absence of health mark on loose smoked whole chickens from the United Kingdom; distributed to Ireland.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0262): Salmonella Soerenga in processed animal protein from Belgium; distributed to Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0263): Listeria monocytogenes in smoked trout fillet from Turkey; distributed to the Netherlands.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Cosmetic Product Safety Alert (Philippines): The Philippines Department of Health warns the public that some lipsticks may contain excessive levels of lead.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating an acute gastroenteritis outbreak that has affected 22 children at a residential child care center in Wan Chai. The outbreak victims range in age from 3 to 20 months. A one-year-old boy required hospitalization, but has since been discharged.
  • Outbreak Alert (India): At least 100 people who attended a wedding party in Baba Hari Dass Nagar (Southwest Delhi) were hospitalized with food poisoning symptoms. The victims complained of vomiting, headache and stomachache.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Coles Supermarkets Ltd. recalls Coles Deli Spicy Capsicum Dip (200g plastic container; Use by 19 MAR 12), due to the presence of undeclared sesame and tree nuts. The recalled product was sold in the Deli section of Coles and Bi-Lo supermarkets in NSW, ACT, TAS and VIC.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): S&B Gourmet Foods (Aust) Pty Ltd., trading as Salad Servers, recalls Chickpeas with Roast Pumpkin Salad (500g and 350g; Use by 23/02/12), due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold at IGA, Supabarn and Thomas Dux Supermarkets in New South Wales and Victoria.

  • Food Safety Withdrawal: Spartan Central Kitchen withdraws several prepared salads and sandwiches containing hard-cooked eggs that were recalled by Michael Foods due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for Harold Food Co. Grand Strand Deluxe Chicken Salad, recalled by Bost Distributing Company because the product contains hard-cooked eggs that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled salads were sold in Wilco-Hess Gas Stations convenience stores in Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: BSH Home Appliances Corp (Irvine, CA) recalls Tassimo Professional Single-Cup Brewers (Model Numbers beginning with TAS6512CUL; Date codes beginning with FD and within the range of 8905 through 9109) and Bosch® Single-Cup Brewers (Model Numbers TAS100, TAS200, TAS451, TAS46 and TAS651; Date codes beginning with FD and within the range 8806 through 9109), because the plastic disc, or T Disc, that holds the coffee or tea can burst and spray hot liquid and coffee grounds or tea leaves onto consumers using the brewers and onto bystanders. The recalled brewers were manufactured in Slovenia and China and were distributed throughout the USA and Canada.
  • Outbreak Alert: Ninety-five passengers and 12 crew members on board the Celebrity Cruises ship Celebrity Constellation have developed symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea during a cruise that began on January 28 and is scheduled to end at Ft. Lauderdale on February 11th. The ship will be met by CDC environmental health officers on its arrival in port.
  • Outbreak Alert: One hundred and seventy-four (174) passengers and 11 crew members on board the Celebrity Cruises ship Celebrity Silhouette have developed symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea during a cruise that began on January 29 and is scheduled to end at Newark, NJ on February 10th. The ship will be met by a CDC environmental health officer and an epidemiologist on its arrival in port.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Metro Marchée Verchères inc. (Waterloo, QC) recalls Pâté au poulet/chicken paté (500g; all units), Pâté au saumon/salmon paté (Frozen; 500g; all units), Pâté mexicain/Mexican paté (525g; all units) and Sous-marin trois viandes/Three-meat submarine (190g; all units), due to the presence of undeclared soy, mustard, and/or egg.
  • Food Safety Recall: Les Produits Kara-mel inc. (L’Ancienne-Lorette, QC) recalls Sauce à spaghetti Lorraine (500ml and 1 liter), Palourde Lorraine (500ml) and Moules fumées (250ml), because the perishable products were sold without refrigeration and may not be safe for human consumption.
  • Food Safety Recall: Société des Alcools du Québec recalls Vignoble Gagliano Vineyards Red Wine (750ml; 2009 vintage; UPC 8 27924 01401 8), due to the presence of process residues.

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Doves Farm withdraws Doves Farm Chocolate & Crispy Rice Bars (5 x 35g; Batch codes 1276, 2026, 1349, 1340, 1312, 1305, 1252, 2010, 1335, 1319, 1290, 1266 and 1243), because the product may contain undeclared milk.

  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Marks and Spencer recalls Marks & Spencer Crispy Prawn Wonton, Marks & Spencer Crispy Vegetable Balls, Marks & Spencer Prawn Baguette Toast, and Marks & Spencer Prawn Siu Mai Selection (Use by date of 9 March 2012), because the products should have been labeled with a Use by date of 9 February 2012.

  • Outbreak Alert (UK and Netherlands): Eurosurveillance reports possible food-borne outbreaks of hepatitis A in the UK and the Netherlands that appear to be linked to consumption of semi-dried tomatoes.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0204): Arsenic in mineral feed from France; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #0212.0205): Cadmium in frozen cuttlefish from Vietnam; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0206): Methomyl in cocktail tomatoes from Morocco, via France; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0207): Insect infestation in dried figs from Turkey via Slovakia; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0210): Salmonella in chilled minced pork from Sweden, with raw material from Germany; distributed to Sweden.

  • Food Safety Recall (Singapore): Denis Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. recalls Ayam Brand Salmon Mayonnaise (185g; Best before 27 July 2014; Production Code MNLIAY SHIDBJN, MFG: 2011.07.27:J) after a consumer reports finding a metal fragment in one can.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health warns the public not to buy or consume the slimming product Xiu Zhi Su L-Carnitine Slimming Capsule, as it may contain the banned Western medicines sibutramine and phenolphthalein.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a confirmed case of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection in a 46-year old male tourist from the USA. The patient left Hong Kong on January 19th.
