United States

  • Allergy Alert: Berres Brothers, Inc. (Watertown, WI) recalls Berres Brothers Coffee Roasters brand Chocolate & Peanut Butter Coffee (12 oz, 2.5 oz, 1.5 oz & 5-lb bulk; Julian date code 12001-12318; whole bean and ground coffee; regular and decaffeinated coffee), Monkey Mocha Coffee (1.5 oz ground & 5-lb bulk regular whole bean; Julian date codes 12271-12318) and Lunch with Elvis Coffee ( 1.5 oz ground, 12 oz regular ground and whole bean, 12 oz decaffeinated ground and whole bean, 5-lb bulk; Julian date codes 12091-12319), due to the presence of undeclared nuts. The recalled coffees were distributed throughout the USA and Guam.
  • Food Safety Recall: Publix Super Markets recalls forty-five cake products, after being notified by their supplier, Maplehurst, that the cakes may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were sold between November 11th through November 15th, 2012 from the retail service bakery departments of Publix stores in the following Florida counties: Brevard, Charlotte, Citrus, Collier, Flagler, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota, Seminole, Sumter, and Volusia.   • Outbreak Alert: Columbus, Ohio Public Health reports an outbreak of Shigella illness in the city. Since the start of the outbreak, 771 cases of shigellosis have been diagnosed and are under investigation.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: Food Safety News reports that the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak in New York State  that is linked to Wegmans spinach and spring mix has grown to 20 confirmed cases. Six outbreak victims were hospitalized, but all have recovered.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Danish Supermarket recalls Tasty Turkey brand Turkey Breast (900g packs; Best before 26/11/2012; Batch No. 886728), due to Salmonella contamination.
  • Food Safety Recall (Switzerland): Coop recalls Naturaplan tender shoulder ham (150g; All lots), after Listeria was detected in a sample from the lot bearing expiry date 19.11.2012.
  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall (France): Auchan recalls Auchan Lessive Liquide Gel Main “express”/ Express Liquid Gel Hand Cleanser (250ml tube; Lots #2222031, 2222131, 2222231, 2227531, 2227631, 2228331, 2228431, and 2228531) due to potential contamination with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Pinnacle Foods Group LLC (Fort Madison, IA) recalls Armour Vienna Sausage Bourbon BBQ Flavored (24 x 5-oz cans per case; Est P-4247; UPC 54100 93824; Use by Sept 7, 2015), because the product may have been underprocessed. The recalled canned sausage products were processed on Sept 7, 2012 and sold to retail establishments nationwide, including Wal-mart.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Loblaw Companies Limited recalls President’s Choice (PC) brand Milk Chocolate Covered Raisins (908g Club Packs; UPC 0 60383 98203 4; Best before 2013 JL 15), because the packages may contain undeclared almonds. The recalled product was distributed nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall: Metro Ontario Inc. recalls Selection brand Baby Dill with Garlic Pickles (1 L; UPC 0 59749 89777 8; Code MTS PD – 05/20/2012 10:37), because the product may contain glass fragments. The recalled product was sold in Ontario and Quebec.
  • Food Safety Recall: Charcuterie Noël inc (Montreal, QC) recalls a number of preserved products (glass jars; sold up to and including November 5, 2012), because the items were not produced in a manner that would ensure their microbiological safety and were sold without refrigeration. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed an 18th case of E. coli O157:H7 associated with the consumption of meat from XL Foods Inc. Illnesses were reported from Alberta (8 cases), Newfoundland and Labrador (1 case), Quebec (6 cases), and British Columbia (3 cases, including one visitor to Canada). Six of the 18 outbreak victims were hospitalized; none developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, and all 18 have survived. Ten of the 18 were male; victims’ ages ranged from five to 63 years of age. The earliest reported illness onset date was September 9th, and the most recent was October 15th.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Asda withdraws Asda Milk Chocolate Spread (400g; All batch codes; All Best Before dates), because the product contains undeclared hazelnuts.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Walkers withdraws Walkers Lights Variety 6 Pack (6 x 24g; Best before 12 January 2013 and 19 January 2013), because milk was not mentioned in the list of ingredients.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Match recalls Cora brand Râpé de poulet (150g; Lot #1243511 and 1243211; Expiry dates 25/11/2012 and 22/11/2012, respectively), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Match recalls Cora brand Râpé de jambon fumé (150g; All lots; All expiry dates), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Arla Foods amba Brabrand Dairy recalls Harmonie drinking yogurt with pineapple / elderflower (350 ml; Best before 22/11/2012) and Culture yogurt with raspberries (500g; Best before 19-11-2012), because the products have fermented due to yeast contamination.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Lidl Denmark K/S recalls Golden Sun Rice Pudding (500g; Best before 290914) due to infestation with beetles.
  • Food Safety Recall (Greece): Katopodi Bros. SA recalls Ntelimari Salami Air Lefkados (225g pkgs; Expiry 04/12/2012), after Listeria monocytogenes is found in the product.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Northern Ireland): The Public Health Agency reports that the outbreak of E. coli O157 illnesses associated with Flicks restaurant in Cityside Mall, Belfast is now over. As of November 14th, there were 138 confirmed cases and 163 probable cases reported. The investigation into the cause of the outbreak is ongoing.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.1568): Soya in rice crackers from the Netherlands; distributed to Norway.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1570): Methomyl in green papaya from Thailand; distributed to the Netherlands.
  • Food Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.1571): Arsenic and lead in clay powder from the USA; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1574): Salmonella Rissen in frozen beef fat from Lithuania; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1576): Cadmium in rock snails from Italy; distributed to Hungary and Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1577): Salmonella Ndolo in chilled mussels from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.1578): Benzethonium chloride in grapefruit seed extract from Poland; distributed to Latvia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1579): Glass fragments in frozen cake from Denmark; distributed to Norway.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1580): Listeria monocytogenes in radish sprouts from the Netherlands; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1581): Listeria welshimeri and Salmonella group B in alfalfa sprouts from the Netherlands; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1582): Salmonella, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus in frozen shrimps from Panama; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1586): Defective packaging of tuna spread from Belgium; distributed to Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

  • Allergy Alert: Giant Eagle recalls Spice Bars – Bakery (UPC 21972200000; All Sell by dates), due to the presence of undeclared soy.
  • Allergy Alert: Mayflower International, aka Fu Xiang Yuan Trading Inc. (Brooklyn, NY) recalls Fu Xiang Yuan Trading Inc. brand Lily Dry (3.5 oz/100g plastic and foil bag; UPC 6 944295 300176; Product of China), due to the presence of undeclared sulfites. The recalled product was distributed throughout the USA.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fresh Express Incorporated (Charlotte, NC) recalls Fresh Express Spinach (9 oz pkg; Product code S299B25; Use by November 7), due to possible contamination with Salmonella. The recalled spinach was distributed primarily in the Western region of the USA.
  • Food Safety Recall: Nestle USA recalls Nestle NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder (40.7 oz; UPC 0 28000 68230 9; Production codes 2282574810 & 2282574820; Best before Oct 2014), Nestle NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder (21.8 oz; UPC 0 28000 68090 9; Production codes 2278574810, 2278574820, 2279574810, 2279574820, 2284574820, 2284574830, 2285574810, 2285574820, 2287574820, 2289574810 & 2289574820; Best before Oct 2014) and Nestle NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder (10.9 oz; UPC 0 28000 67990 3; Production code 2278574810; Best before Oct 2014), because the products contains calcium carbonated supplied by Omya Inc., and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were manufactured during early October, 2012 and distributed nationally.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that a total of 41 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bredeney have been documented in 20 states; 63% are children under the age of 10 years. The illnesses were linked to the consumption of peanut butter manufactured by Sunland, Inc. of Portales, New Mexico. Ten of the outbreak victims were hospitalized.
  • Outbreak Alert: Food Safety News reports that unpasteurized, unlabeled apple cider may be the source of a number of E. coli infections in Antrim County, Michigan. The cider was produced at an unlicensed facility.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Purity Life Health Products recalls Larabar Gluten Free Cashew Fruit & Nut Energy Bars (16 x 48g; Use by 30MAY2013; UPC 00021908455235) due to microbiological spoilage. The recalled bars were sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Asda withdraws Asda Extra Special Syrup Sponge Puddings (300g; Best before 17 February 2013), due to the presence of undeclared soy.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Het Dischhof recalls Keiems Bloempje natuur – Petite Fleur Nature soft curd cheese (Expiry 06/12/12 (Lot 40.3 and 40.4), Expiry 13/12/12 (Lots 41.3, 41.4, 41.5) and Expiry 20/12/12 (Lots 42.2 and 42.4)), and Keiems Bloempje met kruiden – Petite Fleur aux herbes (Expiry 13/12/12; Lot 41/3), due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Netherlands): An additional 31 cases of Salmonella Thompson infections were confirmed in the last week. In total, 1,094 people have been sickened in the Netherlands after consuming smoked salmon contaminated with the outbreak strain.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Northern Ireland): The outbreak of E. coli O157 infections linked to Flicks restaurant in Cityside Mall, Belfast now comprises 137 confirmed cases and 164 probable cases.
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Approximately 350 passengers on the Celebrity Cruise vessel Constellation were reported ill with vomiting and diarrhea, thought to be due to norovirus. The ship’s departure from Southampton was delayed to allow for extra cleaning and sanitizing, according to a BBC report.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (Hong Kong): The Centre for Food Safety advises the public that the following two peanut butter products, which were imported into Hong Kong, were recalled by Sunland Inc. due to potential contamination with Salmonella: Sunland Organic Valencia Peanut Butter Creamy (12 oz/340g; Bar code 4868732810; Best before May 23, 2013) and Sunland Organic Valencia Peanut Butter Crunchy (12 oz/340g; Bar code 4868731810; Best before July 20, 2013). The importer has recalled all affected products, and retail outlets have stopped their sale.
  • Food Safety Recall (Singapore): AVA alerts the public that the following product was recalled by the local importer after the manufacturer initiated a recall due to E. coli contamination: B.d Farm Paris Creek Organic Biodynamic Yoghurt Apricot (200g; Best before 14/11/2012; Product of Australia).
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health advises the public not to buy or consume the slimming product Ku Xiu Ba Xiang Jian Fei Wan, as it may contain undeclared and banned drug ingredients; namely sibutramine and phenolphthalein.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating two suspected food poisoning outbreak involving 12 people who developed symptoms of diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and fever after having dinner at a restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui.
