United States

  • Allergy Alert: S&M USA Enterprise recalls ZHANG ZHOU BRAND TREMELLA (150g plastic bag; Product of China), due to the presence of undeclared sulfites. The recalled product was sold in New York and New Jersey.
  • Food Safety Recall: W & C International Import Inc. recalls Rely Sardine Anchovies (7-oz plastic packages; Product of China) and Rely Dried Yellow Croaker (bulk cartons; Product of China), because the products were not properly eviscerated prior to processing and represent a heightened risk of Clostridium botulinum contamination.
  • Food Safety Recall: Wegmans Foods Markets, Inc. recalls Hard-Cooked Eggs, and several prepared foods that contain hard-cooked eggs (sold at Wegmans’ Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Canandaigua, Newark, Geneva, Corning, Elmira, Geneseo, and Hornell stores between January 23 and February 1, 2012), because the eggs may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and were recalled by Michael Foods, Inc. The following items are included in this recall notice: Hard-Cooked Eggs (sold by the pound in prepared foods or as a choice on the Fresh Foods Bar), Eggs (special-order deli tray or 6-pack, 12 pack), Cobb Salad (10 oz, 43 oz, and 6.5 lb), Garden Salad (10 oz, 20 oz, 2 lb, and 5 lb), Baby Spinach Salad (9 oz, 1.8 lb, and 3.9 lb), Chef Salad (9 oz. and 18 oz.), Egg Salad (sold by the pound in prepared foods), Egg Salad Sub (Sub Shop), Kosher Macaroni Salad (sold by the pound in kosher deli), and Kosher Pickled Eggs (sold by the pound in kosher deli).
  • Food Safety Recall Update: ShopRite reminds consumers that ShopRite of Stanton (1600 West Newport Pike, Wilmington, DE) recalled store-made ground beef (80/20 and 85/15; various packages sizes; Sell by January 22, 2012), because the product may pieces of blue glove. Customers are asked to check their freezers and return any of the recalled meat to the store.
  • Pet Food Safety Recall Update: Advanced Animal Nutrition updates its December 13, 2011 notice alerting consumers to the recall of Dog Power Dog Foods to correct the affected lot numbers. The affected products were manufactured between Jan 4, 2011 and Nov. 18, 2011 and can be identified by lot numbers 4K1004 through 4K1322. The recalled products were distributed in Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has confirmed the presence of Campylobacter jejuni in two unopened samples of raw milk purchased from The Family Cow farm. Maryland has reported 4 confirmed cases of Campylobacter illnesses linked to the consumption of raw milk from this Pennsylvania farm, and Pennsylvania has confirmed 19 cases.
  • Outbreak Alert: CDC and the Pennsylvania State Health Department are cooperating in an ongoing investigation of human Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi B var. L (+) tartrate + infections associated with pet turtle exposures.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: JB’s Sausage Making Supplies Ltd. recalls various flavors of marinades due to the presence of undeclared soy or wheat. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products. The recalled items were distributed in Saskatchewan.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Phoenicia Group (St-Laurent, QC) updates its earlier recall notice to correct the lot codes. The company has recalled Alkanater brand Tahini (454g containers; UPC 6 92551 00002 0; Prod: 5/7/2011; Exp: 5/7/2013), due to possible contamination with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed across Canada.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Fredsted The A/S recalls Xtra brand Chamomile Tea (Boxes of 20 bags; Lot #889 and 1327; Best before 31/12-2012 and 30/4-2013, respectively), due to pesticide residues in excess of the permitted limit.
  • Outbreak Alert (France): Consumption of dried pork sausage was linked to a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype 4,[5],12:I:- in November and December 2011. In all, 337 outbreak cases were identified.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0163): Insect infestation in dried figs from Turkey; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0164): Dead insects in frozen spinach leaves from Belgium; distributed to Greece.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU# 2012.0165): Unauthorized tadalafil in food supplement from Norway; distributed to Andorra, France, Portugal and Spain.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0166): Ethephon in seedless grapes from South Africa, via Belgium; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0167): Metal fragments in chocolate pralines from Italy; distributed to Italy and Switzerland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0168): Listeria monocytogenes in crab bread from France; distributed to France and Spain.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Allways (Germany) Medicine Ltd. recalls the pharmaceutical products Centiplex-B Tab and Abacod Cod Liver Oil Cap, as the products bear unapproved labels.
  • Food Safety Alert (Philippines): The Department of Health has announced a shellfish ban in the waters of Wawa, Bani in Pangasinan, in addition to already announced bans in Dumanquillas Bay, Murcielagos Bay, Masinloc Bay, Matarino Bay, and in Bataan costal waters of Mariveles, Limay, Orlon, Pilar, Balanga, Orani, Abucay and Samal. The ban were triggered by the finding of paralytic shellfish poison in excess of the regulatory limit.

  • Allergy Alert: Narala Bakery (Brooklyn, NY) recalls Fruit Cake (1.5-lb plastic package; uncoded), due to the presence of undeclared eggs. The recalled Fruit Cake was sold at various stores in Brooklyn and Queens.
  • Allergy Alert: JKS Wholesale SVCS Inc (Beltsville, MD) recalls Torta de Pan (16-oz pkgs; Date codes up to and including 02/15/12), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed to supermarkets and delis in Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and New York.
  • Food Safety Recall: Rich Products Corporation expands its earlier recall to include Vanilla Flavored Pre-Soaked Sponge Cake Artificially Flavored (8″; Product Code 62938; Produced in Ocoyoacac, Mexico after July 10, 2011), due to possible contamination with small plastic fragments.
  • Food Safety Recall: Kradjian Imp Co (Glendale, CA) recalls Cedar Tree brand unripened Tresse Cheese and Cedar Tree brand unripened Shinglish cheese (16-oz pkgs; delivered before November 13, 2011), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled cheeses were manufactured and recalled by Fromagerie Marie Kade (Quebec, Canada) and were distributed in Southern California, Northern California, Washington State, Minnesota, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee,Arizona and Michigan to Mediterranean specialty markets.
  • Cosmetic Product Safety Recall: USA Far Ocean Group Inc. recalls Vagifresh Ball and Vagifresh Gel, marketed individually or under a mixed packaged named Female One, because the products contain undeclared benzocaine. In additional, FDA analysis found the presence of several bacterial species in these products, including: Staphylococcus lentus, S. sciuri, Bacillus lantus, Alloiococcus otitis, Aerococcus viridans, Aeromonas salmonicid, Gemella spp, and Leuconostoc spp. The recalled products were sold via herbal stores, beauty shops, drug stores, internet and mail order.
  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall: Perfect Image Solutions, LLC recalls all lots of Men’s Minoxidil 15% Azelaic 5% Hair regrowth topical, 60mL; Men’s Minoxidil 10% Azelaic 5% Hair regrowth topical, 60mL; Men’s Minoxidil 5% Azelaic 5% Hair regrowth topical, 60mL; Women’s Minoxidil 3% Azelaic 5% Hair regrowth topical, 60mL; and Hair regrowth shampoo enhanced with Ketoconazole and salicylic acid, 180mL, because FDA deems these products to be “unapproved new drugs” under the law.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Solly’s (Montreal, QC) recalls various cakes, knishes and homentashen (all lots), due to the presence of undeclared milk, eggs, soy, and/or sulfites.
  • Food Safety Recall: Pantry Shelf Food Corp recalls Pantry Shelf Sliced Water Chestnuts (2.84L; Codes 566 824 1; PRO: 2010 03 30 4500/01053) due to unspecified microbiological contamination.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Germany): ERUs Käsewerk Sangerhausen GmbH recalls ERUs cream cheese exquisito – Indian spices (80g tube; Best before 07/12/2012), due to the presence of undeclared mustard and celery.
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): UK health officials are investigating an unusual increase in cases of salmonellosis due to Salmonella Typhimurium DT 193 in England and Wales. This strain of Salmonella is most common in beef and pork, according to a BBC report, but is also found in unpasteurized milk, desserts and sandwiches.
  • Food Safety Alert (UK): The dining room used by lawyers at the Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London has been closed due to a suspected food contamination issue, according to the Redbridge Council (reported by BBC).
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): A ward at Raigmore Hospital (Inverness) has been closed and some elective surgery cancelled due to an outbreak of Clostridium difficile at the hospital. Seven cases have been confirmed so far in January.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0109): Ethephon in red seedless grapes from Namibia; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0110): Ethephon in red seedless grapes from Lebanon; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0111): Aflatoxins in dried figs from Turkey; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0112): Insect infestation in shelled roasted groundnuts from China, via Slovakia; distributed to the Czech Republic.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Update (China): Tests performed by the Jiangxi Province Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Jiangxi Dairy Quality Supervision and Inspection Center have cleared Synutra’s nutritional products from responsibility for the death of an infant in that Jiangxi Province. Authorities found that samples of Synutra’s products obtained directly from the family of the dead infant and from the retail store where the products were purchased complied with national microbiological standards, while tests of residential well water from the family found elevated levels of coliforms and total bacterial count that exceed national water quality standards.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Bayer Healthcare Limited recalls Saridon Tablet (Batch #CM01474), due to a packaging error.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Backa Australia recalls Chabi (300g, unpackaged; No date marking), due to Staphylococcus contamination. The recalled product was sold only in Queensland, and was available at Backa Australia retail outlet, and at the following Farmers Markets: Chandler, Ascot, Rocklea, Palm Beach, Nerang, Southport and Beenleigh.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): The Therapeutic Goods Administration advises consumers that the sale of AdvanceMen capsules is illegal in Australia, as it contains the undeclared prescription substance sulfoalidenafil, a derivative of sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra).

  • Food Safety Recall: Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc. (Dakota City, NE) recalls Chuck Fine Ground Beef 80/20 (10-lb chubs; Best before or freeze by 11/13/11; Est. 245C), because the ground beef products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled 40,948 pounds of ground beef was supplied to institutions and distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
  • Food Safety Recall: B&M Inc. (Mount Vernon, MO) recalls O Organics Organic Celery Seed (1.8-oz glass bottles; Lot No. 1381102A, 2141102A, 2591106A, 2741106A, 2921102A and 3321110A; Best by dates (respectively) May 18, 2013, August 02, 2013, September 16, 2013, October 01, 2013, October 19, 2013 and November 28, 2013), due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recalled Celery Seed was sold from May 25, 2011 through December 16, 2011 at all Safeway-owned stores, including Safeway, Carrs, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s, Pak ‘N Save, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb and Vons.
  • Food Safety Recall: Swanson Health Products recalls Swanson Organic Celery Seed Whole (1.4-oz plastic bottles; Best by 03JUN2013; Lot #1541102C), after being advised by its supplier, B&M Inc., that the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled Celery Seed was sold at the Swanson Health Products retail store (Fargo, ND), shipped directly to on-line or mail-order customers, or held for pickup at Swanson headquarters.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The California Department of Food and Agriculture has lifted its quarantine on nearly all Organic Pastures raw milk and dairy products, including raw milk, raw butter, raw cream, and raw Qephor. Only the raw colostrum remains quarantined. The quarantine was imposed after five cases of E. coli O157:H7 illness in four different California counties were linked epidemiologically to Organic Pastures raw milk. Three of the five affected children were hospitalized with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a sometimes fatal complication of E. coli O157:H7 infections.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Euromax Foods (Brampton, ON) recalls Euromax brand Smoked Mackerel (Best before 28DE 11), Smoked Mackerel Fillets (Best before 21DE 11 and 28DE 11), Smoked Herring (Best before 28DE 11), Smoked Herring Fillets (Best before 28DE 11), Smoked Rainbow Trout (Best before 28DE 11), Smoked White Fish (Best before 21DE 11), and Smoked Halibut (Best before 21DE 11), because the products may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled smoked fish products were sold in variable weights only at Euromax Foods retail store (Brampton, Ontario).

Europe

  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Wards in several north-west London and Bedfordshire hospitals have been closed, and visiting has been severely restricted, in order to contain an outbreak of norovirus gastroenteritis in these hospitals. The affected hospitals include Northwick Park Hospital, Bedford Hospital, Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Montagu Hospital, and Warwick Hospital.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): La Société Salaison Polette ZA recalls Môssieur Polette, Nos Regions on du Talent, Cora, Match chez Leclerc, Casino, Monoprix, and Match brand Saucisson Secs / Saucisses Sèches Label Rouge dry sausages (All lots of product sold from 01/10/11 to 15/12/11), due to a strong probability of Salmonella contamination.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Coles Supermarkets Ltd. recalls Coles Chocolate Cake with Icing Cake Mix (470g cardboard box; All best before dates up to and including 16 Dec 12), due to the presence of undeclared sesame. The recalled products were distributed nationwide.
