Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Glatt’s Kosher Meat Products (Montreal, QC) recalls Glatt’s Beef Frankfurters Jumbo BBQ (375g packages; UPC 0 55627 00203 6; Best Before date of 12AL21), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled Beef Frankfurters were distributed in Quebec and Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Charcuterie La Tour Eiffel Inc. recalls La Belle Bretagne brand Our Cooked Ham – Original (Variable kg; Best before 12AL14 or 12AL21), La Belle Bretagne brand Sliced Cooked Ham (Variable kg; Best before 12AL01), La Belle Bretagne brand Our Cooked Ham – Original Sliced (175g; Best before 12MR30), Tour Eiffel Cooked Ham – Extra Lean (Variable kg; Lot 271), Tour Eiffel Parisian Cooked Ham (175g; Best before 12MR31), Tour Eiffel Shaved Parisian Cooked Ham (175g and 400g; Best before 12MR20 or 12MR21), and Tour Eiffel Chopped Cooked Ham (400g; Best before 12MR16), due to contamination with Clostridium perfringens. The recalled products were supplied to retailers, and to hotels, restaurants, and institutions in Quebec.

Europe

  • Food Safety Withdrawal (UK): B&M Sausages withdraws the following meat products in Scotland, due to inadequate disinfection of food contact surfaces between raw and ready-to-eat foods, resulting in potential cross-contamination with pathogenic bacteria: Wiejka Sausage, Szynka Poledwica, Boczek Rdowany, Zwyczajna, Firmova, Szynkowa, Kabanos, Schab Rolonkiny, Krakowska, Biala, Przysmak Swietokrzyski, Parowkova, Pasztetowa, Frankfurterki, Salceson, Zeberka Wedzone, Boczek, Kaszanka, Blgosowka, Rolada Pieczen, Karczek Pieczony, and Boczek Pieczony (produced up to and including 1 March 2012).
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Spain): AEMPS mandates the recall of L-5HTP (60 capsules; 1000mg/capsule), because the product contains the unauthorized active ingredient L-5 hydroxytriptophan
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): The Royal Lancaster Infirmary (Lancashire) has banned visitors from nine wards in an effort to contain an outbreak of norovirus at the hospital.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0319): Shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli in onion mettwurst sausage from Germany; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0320): Cadmium in frozen ribbonfish from India; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0321): Dicofol and oxamyl in green beans from Morocco, via Spain; distributed to Germany.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0322): Undeclared milk ingredient in dark chocolate spread from Belgium; distributed to Andorra, France and Spain.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): The Reject Shop Ltd. recalls Snack Stacks Potato Crisps Barbeque (160g cardboard tube; Product of China; All best before dates up to and including 20/02/2012), due to the presence of undeclared whey, a milk protein. The recalled product was sold in The Reject Shop retail stores across Australia.
  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Vitaco Health (NZ) Limited recalls Healtheries Kidscare Rice Wheels-Cheese-Sour Cream & Chives-Burger (All pack sizes; All Best before dates up to and including 24/11/12) and Healtheries Wiggles Ricey Bites-Cheese-Tomato (All pack sizes; All Best before dates up to and including 24/11/12), due to possible contamination with glass particles. The recalled products were sold in Supermarkets and Health Stores across New Zealand.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Vitaco Health Australia recalls Healtheries Kidscare Rice Wheels Roast Chicken (10 x 18g packets; Best before dates up to and including 4/01/13), Healtheries Kidscare Rice Wheels Burger (10 x 18g packets; Best before dates up to and including 4/01/13), Healtheries Kidscare Rice Wheels Cheese (10 x 18g packets; Best before dates up to and including 4/01/13) and Healtheries Wiggles Ricey Bites Cheese (8 x 15g packets; Best before dates up to and including 4/01/13), due to contamination with foreign matter (glass). The recalled products were imported from Indonesia and sold online and nationally at Coles, Woolworths, Safeway, The Reject Shop, IGA and other independent supermarkets.
  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): At least 19 cases of hepatitis A infections have been confirmed in Auckland, including a cluster of cases involving school-age children. The source of the outbreak is unknown.

  • Food Safety Recall: The Florida Brewery, Inc. recalls Goya (Lot codes 12/01/13, 12/08/13, 12/27/13, 12/28/13, 12/29/13, and 01/06/13), Great Value (Lot codes 1/05/13 and 1/06/13), Hatuey (Lot codes 12/21/13, 12/22/13, 01/06/13, and 01/07/13), Mr. Special (Lot codes 11/30/13, 12/01/13, 12/08/13, and 12/09/13), Polar (Lot codes 11/30/12, 12/22/12, 12/23/12, 12/29/12, 12/30/12, 01/03/13, and 01/04/13), Publix (Lot codes 11/28/13, 12/09/13, and 12/27/13), Regal (Lot codes 12/01/13, 12/09/13, 12/27/13, and 12/28/13) and Super Max (Lot code 12/09/13) non-alcoholic malta beverages packaged in 7-oz bottles, because glass on the exterior of the bottles may break when the twist-off cap is removed from the bottles. The recalled products were distributed in Florida, Texas, California and Puerto Rico between December 8, 2011 and February 1, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Nuts & Spice Co. (Union City, CA) recalls HB Rewari Sugar-Flat sugar candy, HB Rewari Gur-Coin Jaggery Candy, HB Rewari Sugar-Coin sugar candy and HB Rewari Sugar-Round Candy (28 oz/800g pkgs; Imported from India; All date codes), due to unacceptable levels of lead in the candies. The recalled products were distributed in Northern California.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: American Regent recalls Phenylephrine HCl Injection, USP, 1% (10mg/mL), (5 mL Vial NDC # 0517-0405-25, Lot # 0693, Exp Date: October, 2012), due to potential safety concerns stemming from the identification of visible particles found in some retained samples of this lot.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Bedford Laboratories™ recalls Cytarabine for injection, USP 1 gram per vial (NDC #55390-133-01; Lot 2066986, Exp March 31, 2014; Lot 2111675, Exp April 30, 2014; Lot 2131148, Exp May 31, 2014), due to a post-release investigation of the manufacturing area which determined a potential elevated risk of a lack of sterility assurance for these specific lots.
  • Food Safety Alert: The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets (VAAFM) is strongly cautioning consumers to be wary of door-to-door meat sellers, following reports of sellers arriving unannounced at Vermont residences, using high-pressure tactics to sell meat of questionable origin to homeowners.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Campylobacter outbreak associated with consumption of unpasteurized milk from The Family Cow dairy in Pennsylvania has grown to 78 confirmed cases, including 2 in New Jersey, 5 in Maryland, and 3 in West Virginia. Sixty-eight Pennsylvanians also have been infected. Four of the five Maryland victims were less than 18 years old. According to the New Jersey Department of Health, the outbreak occurred despite the fact that Family Cow Dairy is licensed, inspected, and operating in compliance with Pennsylvania laws.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Groupe Épicia inc recalls several Jardin Mobile brand ready-to-eat products, due to the presence of undeclared milk, wheat, soy, eggs, pine nuts and/or sesame.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert Update: New Food Classics has expanded its earlier recall to clarify distribution. The company has recalled Country Morning Beef Burgers (1 kg; UPC 0 57316 02941 6; Lots 52841 EST 761, 62841 EST 761, 72841 EST 761, and 82841 EST 761), and no name Club Pack Beef Steakettes (2.27 kg; UPC 0 60383 01321 9; Lots BB 2012 AL 10 EST 761), due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7. One illness has been reported, for which no details have been released. The Country Morning Beef Burgers product has been distributed to COOP and TGP grocery stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, North West Territories, Yukon Territories and Nunavut. The no name Club Pack Beef Steakettes have been distributed by Loblaws to Cash&Carry/RCWC Ontario Corporate, Extra Foods, Freshmart, Loblaws Great Food, no frills, RCWC West Corporate, Real Canadian Superstore, Value-mart, Your Independent Grocer, Zehrs and Zehrs Great Food stores in Ontario, to Extra Foods, Extra Foods no frills, Real Canadian Superstore West Corporate, Shop Easy/SuperValu, Superstore, Your Independent Grocer in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and to stores in the North West Territories, Yukon Territories and Nunavut.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Hamilton public health department is investigating four cases of salmonellosis that may be linked to the Eat a Pita restaurant on Main Street East at Kenilworth Avenue. The restaurant has been temporarily closed.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Sweden): Axfood recalls Ground Meat, 20% fat (1kg and 2.2kg; Use by 28 February 2012), because the product, which contains beef from Ireland and pork from Denmark, may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): IGOs A/S recalls Light Blueberry Jam (280g glass jar; Best before 14/2-2013 (L750) and 17/3-2013 (L934)), due to mold growth in some of the jars.
  • Food Withdrawal (Greece): Carrefour Marinopoulos SA withdraws Genuine LADOPAXIMADA KYTHERA Whole Nuts (380-400g bags; Expiry 25/04/12), due to rancidity.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Medical Device Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): The Department of Health alerts the public to the recall of certain lots of a blood glucose test strip in France. The affected product is Mylife™ Pura® (box of 100’s) manufactured by Bionime Corporation. The test strips may give falsely high blood glucose readings.

  • Food Safety Recall: Nuts & Spice Co. (Union City, CA) recalls HB Rewari Gur-Flat Jaggery Candy (28 oz; Product of India; All date codes), due to unacceptable levels of lead. The recalled candy was distributed to retail facilities in Northern California.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Chili Station (Ludlow, MA) recalls The Chili Station Beef Chili with Beans (5-gal containers and 1-gal bags; Est. 6380 or P-6380) and The Chili Station Beef Chili with Beans and/or Turkey Chili (5-gal containers and 1-gal bags; Est. 6380 or P-6380), because they may have been produced without the benefit of federal inspection. The recalled products were sold in Massachusetts.
  • Outbreak Alert: Officials at George Washington University (Washington, DC) report that about 85 students have been infected with norovirus in the last week. No common link was found.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Campylobacter raw milk outbreak associated with The Family Cow dairy in Pennsylvania has sickened 77 people in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Les Viandes CDS Inc. recalls Bégin Frozen Pepperoni (2.78 kg; Code #35111), due to contamination with metal particles. The recalled product was distributed to hotels, restaurants, and/or institutions in Québec.
  • Health Alert: Health Canada advises Canadians of a possible association between the use of prescription stomach antacids (proton pump inhibitors) and an increased risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. While healthy adults are not typically vulnerable to C. difficile infections, the risk of infection increases with advanced age, severe underlying illness, hospitalization, or antibiotic use.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert: Auchan recalls Auchan Oriental Taboulé (400g, 600g, and promotional 400g + 200g free; Best before 15/02/12), due to the presence of undeclared seafood.
  • Allergy Alert: ERUs Kasewerk Sangerhausen GmbH recalls ERUs Cream Cheese Exquisito – Indian Spices, due to the presence of undeclared mustard and celery.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fiskerikajen ApS recalls Spéciale écaille d’argent 96 No. 3 Oysters (Lot #12034EC3, 12046EC3 and 12056EC3; Production dates 18/1-2012, 27/1-2012, and 3/2-2012, respectively), due to norovirus contamination.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a food poisoning outbreak that has sickened 50 students, who complained of abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea approximately 1 to 20 hours after having lunch in a primary school in Tuen Mun on February 14th.

Australia and New Zealand

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Australia): Integria Healthcare Australia Pty Ltd. recalls Greenridge Gastrocalm Liquid (200ml bottle; Batch #5972; Expiry 08/14) and Greenridge Triplex Liquid (200ml bottle; Batch No. 6797; Expiry 08/14), because the affected bottles have been mislabelled.
  • Outbreak Alert (Australia): Central Queensland Public Health Unit warns of a recent rise in the number of cases of Cryptosporidium infections across the region. Twenty-six cases have been reported so far in 2012, versus the usual number of 25-30 cases for an entire year.
