United States

  • Food Safety/Outbreak Alert: The New York State Department of Health and Department of Agriculture and Markets warn consumers in and around Tompkins County not to consume raw milk produced at Jerry Dell Farm (39 Fall Creek Rd, Freeville), because the unpasteurized milk may be contaminated with Campylobacter. The State has received two reports of Campylobacter enteritis from people who consumed raw milk purchased from Jerry Dell Farm. The farm has voluntarily suspended milk sales. Tests carried out by the New York State Food Laboratory confirmed the presence of Campylobacter in unpasteurized milk produced at Jerry Dell Farm.
  • Food Safety Recall: Kraft Foods Global, Inc. recalls three varieties of Velveeta Shells & Cheese Single Serve Microwaveable Cups, due to the possible presence of small, thin wire bristle pieces. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of recalled products and affected Use By dates.
  • Food Safety Recall: True Leaf Farms recalls Bagged, Chopped Romaine Lettuce (Use by 9/29/11), because the lettuce may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The product was shipped to wholesale food service distributors in Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Vermont, as well as in Alberta (Canada). The bagged Romaine also was sold directly to retail customers at Unified Grocers, Inc. Cash & Carry Smart Food Service stores in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Andrew Williamson Fresh Produce expands its earlier recall notice of Organic Grape Tomatoes to include additional distribution information. The Organic Grape Tomatoes (Product of Mexico), may have been distributed to all 50 US states. In addition, the produce was exported to Canada. The recalled tomatoes were recalled due to Salmonella contamination.
  • Food Recall: Top Food & Drug announces the recall of San Juan Salsa, Traditional 12/14 oz (Lot 10/19/2011/2013), due to “product bloating.”
  • Food Recall: Price Chopper recalls Central Market Classics Bear Foot Brownie Ice Cream (0.5gal), because the product in the container does not match what is stated on the container.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert Update: Solo Fruit Inc. expands its earlier recall of Solo Fruit brand Dark Chocolate Sorbet to include lot codes 1111116, 1111165, 1111040, 1110346 or 1111062. The recalled product, which may contain undeclared milk, was distributed in Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia, but may also have been sold in other Canadian provinces and territories.
  • Allergy Alert: Raphaville Int’l Ltd. recalls Erom Dr. Hwang’s Premium Soy Drink (Product of Korea; 102.8 fl. oz/3040 mL bulk package), because the product contains undeclared peanuts and milk. The recalled product was distributed only in the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Food Safety Recall: Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce (San Diego, CA) recalls Limited Edition Organic Grape Tomatoes (Product of Mexico; 10.5-oz/298g plastic clam shell containers), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. Canadian importers of this product are recalling the product from the marketplace. The recalled tomatoes were distributed in British Columbia and Ontario, and may have been sold elsewhere in Canada.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Les Cuisines Gaspésiennes de Matane Ltée has updated its earlier recall of Compliments brand Sensations Old-Style Smoked Ham (175g pkgs; Lot codes 230 87 and 230 9487; Best before 2011NO13) to correct distribution information. The recalled product, which may contain Listeria monocytogenes, was distributed in Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Sobeys Store #6554, Marché Alain Viau, located in Embrun, Ontario.
  • Food Safety Alert: Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health and Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health warn Ontarians not to consume Strubs brand Smoked Salmon (250g vacuum pkg; Lot 09192011) because the product may be contaminated with Listeria. The recalled product was sold in supermarkets, grocery stores and delicatessens. The extent of distribution across Ontario is unknown.
  • Food Safety Recall: Deep Canada Inc. recalls Deep brand Amba Haldar (fresh turmeric) Pickle in Brine (283g; Code MFG 06/11 B.NO:11168 B.B. 05/2013), because the product may contain glass particles. The recalled product was distributed through retailers in Ontario.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (France): Roussillon Salaisons recalls Regal Catalan chez Leader Price Cooked Pork Ears (Product of Spain; Vacuum packed; Lot 07072011, Best by 05/10/2011 and 27062011, Best by 25/09/2011), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall (Sweden): Axfood recalls Spice Field brand Provençal Spice Mix (Expiration/Lot code 30-08-2014 1072 912th), after Salmonella was found in a sample.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Danish Supermarket Shopping recalls Luxusgront Baersymfoni berry mixture  containing raspberries from Serbia (350g; Lot No. L1173.3 22:10; Packaged in Belgium), because the raspberries may be contaminated with norovirus.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Parmalat Australia recalls Pura Milk (2L; Use by 12 OCT) and Daisy Fresh Milk (3L; Use by 12 OCT), because the products may contain a small amount of food grade dairy caustic cleaning solution.

United States

  • Allergy Alert: Silva Sausage Co. (Gilroy, CA) recalls 28,782 pounds of Silva Sausage Smoked Chicken Apple Sausage, and Hickory Smoked Chicken with Apples & Sage (Est # P-6086; Various case codes and production dates), due to the presence of undeclared cultured whey. The recalled products were distributed to retail establishments and institutions in the Sacramento and San Luis Obispo (California) areas.
  • Food Safety Recall: Vita Food Products, Inc (Chicago, IL) recalls Vita Classic Premium Sliced Smoked Atlantic Nova Salmon (4-oz pkgs; Sell by date & code of Dec 15 2011 01961B), due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled smoked salmon was sold at Publix stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Safeway stores in California, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and District of Columbia, Meijer stores in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky, Vons stores in California, Genuardi’s stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Winn Dixie stores in Florida, and the Edgewater Produce store in Chicago, IL on or after July 25, 2011. Some packages also may have been sold at various grocery stores in the Buffalo (NY) and Puttsburgh (PA) metropolitan areas, and in Northeast Ohio.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action:  U.S. Marshals seized all FDA-regulated food susceptible to rodent and pest contamination or other filth held at the Durham, North Carolina, warehouse of CFSD, Inc., which does business as Chan’s Food Service.  According to FDA’s complaint, the products are adulterated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, because they have been held under insanitary conditions.
  • Boil Water Advisory (Washington State): A Boil-Water Advisory has been issued to customers of the Basin City Water-Sewer District water system, because E. coli were found in the water during routine water quality monitoring.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert Update: Indianlife Food Corporation (Burnaby, BC) recalls Indianlife brand Plain Papadums (120g pkgs; Codes MFG 10249 and MFG 11027), due to the presence of undeclared gluten. This is an expansion of the original Allergy Alert, issued on August 24, 2011.
  • Medical Device Safety Recall: Costco Canada warns its customers that CoopervVision has announce a voluntary recall of certain Encore100 Toric Contact Lenses (Item #277220), purchased  between April 18 and August 23, 2011 at Costco Canada warehouse stores. The recalled lenses may cay temporary hazy or blurry vision or discomfort,most likely caused by transient or reversible swelling of the surface layer of the cornea.
  • Consumer Advisory: Following FDA’s recent Import Alert on papayas imported from Mexico, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is working with authorities in the United States and Mexico to identify any products that have been shipped to Canada. Based on this information, the CFIA will determine if Canada requires additional import controls. There have been two reported illnesses of Salmonella Agona in Canada; both cases were associated with consuming papayas while traveling in Mexico.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Waitrose recalls Waitrose Cook’s Ingredients Pulled Ham Hock (180g; Use by 27, 29 and 31 August 2011) and Waitrose Essential Corned Beef (140g; Use by 2 September 2011), after routine testing detected the presence of Listeria in these products.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Asda recalls six flavors of Asda Chosen By You drinks (6 x 300ml bottles; all date codes) because there is a possible risk of choking associated with the sports caps on the bottles.
  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): East End House recalls East End Coriander Poudre (1kg; Batch code 0313L2B; Best before 09/11/12), due to the presence of Salmonella.
  • Food Alert (Norway): After finding residues of the fungicide procymidon in a random sample of Polish raspberries in stock at Rora Factories AS, the Norway Food Safety Authority has imposed a sales ban on the raw materials and products of the above-mentioned company.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Odin Seafoods ApS recalls Delicato Smoked Halibut (Batch 2011/0223; Best before 25-08-2011; Product of Poland), after Listeria monocytogenes was found in the product.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Gert Nielsen A/S recalls several meat products after Salmonella was found in a batch of the raw material.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (UK): Reckitt Benckiser (UK) Ltd. recalls Nurofen Plus Tablets containing rogue Seroquel XL 50mg tablets, after receiving three reports of rogue Seroquel XL 50mg tablets in cartons of the Nurofen Plus.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall: La Cloche recalls La Cloche Chicken Liver Paté (200-500g packages; Batches dated 19 July 2011 to 28 August 2011), because the paté may be contaminated with Campylobacter. The recalled paté was distributed only through selected La Cloche, Moore Wilsn, Wholly Bagels and Cameron Harrison outlets in the Wellington area.

  • Allergy Alert: Paleteria La Super (Yakima, WA) recalls Paleteria La Super brand Nut, Esquimal and Pina Colada flavored ice cream bars, because the bars may contain undeclared walnuts, milk, or coconut, respectively. The recalled ice cream bars were distributed to retail stores in the Yakima area.
  • Allergy Alert: YoCream International, Inc. (Portland, OR) recalls Nonfat NY Cheesecake Frozen Yogurt Mix (half-gallon carton; Item 92147; Lot codes 2990, 3200, 3470, 3520, 0391, 0461, 0591, 0731, 0871, 0961, 1131, 1171, 1231, 1291, 1541, 1661, 1811, 1921, 2061, and 2131), because the product contains undeclared eggs.The recalled yogurt mix was supplied to distributors and food service operators throughout the USA and was supplied to one US-based export customer. The product is available to consumers primarily through frozen yogurt shops and other retail establishments that serve frozen yogurt.
  • Allergy Alert: H-E-B recalls Pretzel Logic 6-count and Single Cookies (sold at all Texas Central Market stores), because the products contain undeclared pecans.
  • Food Safety Recall: Buehler’s Fresh Foods announces recall of Pillsbury Grands Jr. Golden Layers Buttermilk Biscuits (5 ct pkg with Best if used by 13 OCT, 14 OCT; 10 ct pkg with Best if used by 14 OCT). No reason given for the recall.
  • Food Safety Recall: Buffalo Bill’s Brewery recalls Buffalo Bill’s Brewery Orange Blossom Cream Ale (6-pack bottles; shipped between January and July 2011), because fermentation may cause caps to pop or glass bottles to rupture. The recalled Cream Ale was sold at HyVee stores.
  • Food Safety Alert: The Kansas Department of Agriculture warns consumers in Northeast Kansas that meat was stolen from a custom meat locker in Beattie and may be offered for sale in the region. Approximately 250 pounds of ground beef, 100 to 150 pounds of bacon, three custom hogs, a quarter of beef, several hundred dollars worth of beef jerky, 20 to 25 pounds of an experimental batch of chili cheese dogs and a gun were stolen.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that the double outbreak of Salmonella Altona and Salmonella Johannesburg illnesses linked to contact with infected chicks and ducklings has continued to grow. Sixty-five people in 20 states have been sickened by Salmonella Altona, and 27 people in 15 states were infected with Salmonella Johannesburg.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Sugar Plum Foods (White House, TN) that a May 2011 inspection of the company’s acidified food facility revealed serious violations of Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 108, Emergency Permit Control; 114, Acidified Foods; and, 110, Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Human Food.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Muddypaws Cheesecake Co. (St. Louis Park, MN) that a May 2011 inspection of the company’s processing facility revealed significant deviations from the food labeling regulations.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The North West Company International, Inc. (Anchorage, AK) that an April-May 2011 inspection of the company’s food storage facility revealed serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for manufacturing, packing, or holding human food.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Schneider’s Fish & Seafood Corp. (Cheektowaga, NY) that a December 2010 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Pan Asia Food Co. Ltd. recalls Chungjungwon Sunchang Gochujang (Hot Petter Paste), 1 kg, due to the presence of undeclared soy.
  • Allergy Alert: Seoul Trading Corporation (BC) recalls Chungjungwon Sunchang Gochujang (Hot Petter Paste), 500g and 1kg, due to the presence of undeclared soy.
  • Allergy Alert: T-Brothers Food and Trading Ltd recalls Chungjungwon Sunchang Gochujang (Hot Petter Paste), 500g and 1kg, due to the presence of undeclared soy.
  • Allergy Alert: Seoul Trading Corporation (ON) recalls Choripdong Enzyme, 454g, due to the presence of undeclared wheat.
  • Allergy Alert: Korea Food Trading recalls Chungjungwon Sunchang Gochujang (Hot Petter Paste), 500g and 1kg, due to the presence of undeclared soy.
  • Allergy Alert: Seoul Trading Corporation (ON) recalls Chungjungwon Sunchang Gochujang (Hot Pepper Paste – Hot Pepper Bean Paste, Mild), 1 kg, due to the presence of undeclared soy.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Solhjulet A/S recalls Nagel tofu Crack Sausages (250g pkg; Best before 10.10.11; product of Germany) due to the presence of undeclared celery.
  • Allergy Alert (UK & Ireland): Onken alerts consumers to an issue on their Strawberry, Peach and Summer Berries Wholegrain Yogurts packaging. These products contain wholegrains such as barley, rye, oats and wheat and are therefore not gluten free. This is clear from the ingredients list and allergen warning, however there is a gluten free icon on the packaging which is incorrect.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): La Société Patrelle recalls 4 ‘Oclock chez Auchan et Mutant snack with apple sauce, peach beverage and cookies (Lot 139110; Use by 01-2012), because of fermentation in the apple sauce compartment.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Stryhns A/S recalls Langelaender sausage, and Stryhns Smoked Sausage (Best before 8/9/2011 through 16/9/2011) and Sausage Man Langelaender (Best before 7/2/2012 through 15/2/2012) after E. coli was found n the drinking water from the municipal waterworks on Langeland.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Lidl Denmark K/S recalls Dried, Sliced Banana Chips (200g; Expiry 05/04/2012), due to the presence of high levels of PAH, a potential carcinogen.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.1133): Dioxins in paprika powder from China, via the Netherlands; distributed to Belgium.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1134): Trifluralin in frozen pagasius fillets from Vietnam; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1137): Presence of bacterial inhibitor in pasteurized milk in tank from Germany; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1140): Campylobacter spp. in chilled whole chicken from Germany; distributed to Denmark.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2011.1141): Unauthorised novel food ingredient Gynostemma pentaphyllum and unauthorised substances vinpocetine, vincamine and vinburnine in food supplement from the United States, via the Netherlands; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1142): Foreign body in canned stewed beef from Latvia; distributed to Estonia and Finland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1143): Dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorobifenyls in sodium bicarbonate with anticaking agent from Germany; distributed to Belgium and the United Kingdom.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2011.1144): Unauthorised substances vinpocetine and evodiamine in food supplement from the United States, via Austria and via Hungary; distributed to Germany.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1146): Salmonella Derby in dog chews from Mexico; distributed to Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1148): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled silver scabbardfish from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1149): Excess sulphite in frozen raw shrimps from Senegal; distributed to Spain.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.1150): Arsenic in palm kernel expeller from Malaysia; distributed to Ireland and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1151): Damaged packaging and poor hygienic condition of baked clams from Vietnam, via the Netherlands; distributed to Spain.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (Israel): General Mills recalls Pillsbury brand chocolate, marble, and vanilla cake mixes (Expiration dates from June 10, 2012 through August 20, 2012), after pieces of plastic were found in the products
  • Food Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Forcode Industries Ltd. recalls Ming Shan Brand Hot Bean Paste (230g; Product of Taiwan; Best before March 7, 2012; Manufactured by An-An Food Industry Corp), after test results showed that the hot bean paste contained excessive DINP.
