  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Capt’n Chucky’s Crab Cake Company, LLC (Newton Square, PA) that a January/February 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Yamaya USA Inc. (Torrance, CA) that an April 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing and importer establishment revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Pacific Food, Inc. (Columbus, OH) that a February 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns George Packing Company, Inc. (Newberg, OR) that a March 2011 inspection of the company’s hazelnut packing house and warehouse revealed that the company’s hazelnuts are adulterated within the meaning of the Act, in that they have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Rose Acre Farms, Inc. (Seymour, IN) that laboratory analysis of environmental samples collected during an April 2011 inspection of White County Egg Farm found the presence of Salmonella Enteritidis in two egg laying houses. In addition the inspection revealed violations of the Prevention of Salmonella enteritidis in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage, and Transportation regulation (shell egg regulation).
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Dynamic Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Brooksville, FL) that a November/December 2010 inspection of the company’s dietary supplement manufacturing facility revealed significant violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) in Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling, or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Culinary Crossing Inc. (Harleysville, PA) that a February/March 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Right Choice Products Inc. recalls Good Choice Red Chilli Powder, 100g and Good Choice Punjabi Burryan, 3 kg due to the presence of undeclared gluten. The recalled products were distributed to retailers in Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Greece): Carrefour recalls Carrefour Chocolate Wafers, 33g (Code L212011), due to the presence of undeclared almonds.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0997): Salmonella spp. in frozen peeled shrimps from the Netherlands; distributed to France.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.0998): DDT in white maize from Ethiopia; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1001): Ochratoxin A in dried raisins from Iran; distributed to Poland.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1002): Almond traces in chocolate wafers from Greece; distributed to Cyprus.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1004): Listeria monocytogenes in frozen corn from Bulgaria; distributed to Slovenia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1008): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled monkfish from France; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1009): Foodborne outbreak suspected to be caused by eggs from Spain; distributed to France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1010): Parasitic infestation with nematodes of hake from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1014): Excess sulphite and undeclared sulphite in glucose syrup from Bulgaria; distributed to Greece.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1016): Plastic fragments in meatloaf with cherries from Belgium; distributed to Belgium and Luxembourg.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert Update: Fresh, Whole Papayas recalled by Agromod Produce, Inc. were sold at Walmart Stores in the USA, according to information released today by Walmart. The papayas, which were imported from Mexico, are thought to be the source of an outbreak of Salmonella Agona that has sickened 97 people from 23 states since January 1, 2011.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Verka Food International Ltd. recalls Bikano Rasogolla, 1 kg (Best before 15/02/2012), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites.
  • Food Safety Recall: Primeridge Pure recalls Primeridge Pure brand Pure Cheese Curds (Packed on 08.07.11; sold in random weight packages at Owen Sound Farmers’ Market on July 9, 2011), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Recall: Garlic Guru Foods recalls Garlic Guru Roma Tomato Hummus, Smokey Garbanzo Hummus, and Roasted Red Pepper Hummus (350mL; no codes), due to microbiological spoilage.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert: Health Canada advises the public that its list of unauthorized health products has been updated to include Tibet Babao, which was found to contain undeclared sildenafil.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Ardo A/S recalls Hallon Orchard Frozen Raspberry (Lot No. YA 01 11 131st; Best before 11.05.2013), because norovirus was found in a sample of the raspberries.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Cheap As Chips recalls Snickers Bar, 57g (Batch code 111F1NLD0311; Date marking 16-10-11), Mars Bar, 51g (Batch code 113F3NLD0311; Date marking 25-12-11), Bounty Bar, 57g (Batch code 108B3NLD0103; Date marking 25-09-11) and Twix Bar, 58g (Batch code GC116; Date marking 10-10-11), due to non-compliant labeling, including the presence of undeclared peanut, tree nuts, soy, milk, egg and gluten. The recalled products were manufactured in Germany and the Netherlands, and were imported from Denmark. They are not associated with products made by Mars Chocolate Australia. The recalled items were sold in Cheap As Chips stores in South Australia and Victoria.

United States

  • Allergy Alert: Yant Beef Jerky (Jackson Center, OH) recalls Yant’s Hot Beef jerky, Yant’s X Hot Beef Jerky, Yant’s Milk Beef Jerky, Yant’s Southern BBQ Beef Jerky and Yant’s Hot and Sweet Beef Jerky (1.6-oz, 3.25-oz, and 7-oz pkgs; Est 21371; Sell by dates from July 20, 2011 to April 17, 2012), because the products contain undeclared fish (anchovy puree ingredient in Worcestershire sauce). The recalled products were shipped to retailers in Ohio and Indiana, and a small amount of product also was sold on-line.
  • Food Safety Recall: Jetro Cash and Carry Enterprises LLC/R.D. Food Services LP recalls Assoluti Cooked Diced Bacon (2 x 5-lb bags/box; Product of Canada (Aliments Prince, S.E.C. Est. No. 169A); Case Code 1173), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled diced bacon was shipped to distribution centers in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio for further distribution to food service institutions.
  • Food Safety Recall: Bobby Salazar’s Mexican Foods (Fowler, CA) recalls Carne Asada Chopped Beef & Textured Wheat Protein in Red Hot Sauce (4 x 4-lb bags/case; Produced April 19, 2011 and May 11, 2011), because the chopped beef products were processed outside of normal hours of operation and, therefore, without the benefit of federal inspection. The recalled product was shipped to a distributor and restaurants in California for further distribution.

Canada

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Advisory: Health Canada reports that one bottle of the prenatal multivitamin Centrum Materna has been found to contain unidentified capsules instead of the proper Materna multivitamins, which are pink, oval-shaped tablets. The bottle was found on the shelf in a Shopper’s Drug Mart in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in its sealed box with the seal on the bottle removed. Tampering is suspected.

Europe

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): The Agence Européene du Medicament recalls Vimpat Syrup for Epileptic Patients, 15 mg/ml (200ml; all lots), because of an uneven distribution of the active ingredient Lacosamide in the syrup. Patients using Vimpat should not stop using the product or adjust their dosage with consulting their physician. The recall will commence officially on September 15, 2011 to allow doctors time to prescribe alternative treatments.
