United States

  • Allergy Alert: M & P Food production Ltd. (Brooklyn, NY) recalls Bapehuku, Babushka, Russian, and Siberian brands of chicken, beef, veal and pork dumpling products, because they may contain undeclared milk. The recalled products were manufactured between March 18th and Sept. 19th, 2011 and distributed to retailers in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.
  • Food Safety Recall: Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. (Milwaukee, WI) recalls Chef’s Collection Chicken Milanese Breast (Item code 037496; Lot code 171589-2561), because the products may have been undercooked. The recalled chicken breast products were sold in Copps, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pick ‘n Save and Rainbow Foods stores in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Asti Holdings Ltd. (New Westminister, BC) recalls Nougat d’Or brand Honey Almond Nougat, Honey Almond Nougat with Cranberries, and Honey Almond Nougat with Orange (130g packages; Lot #111591111, 113541011, and 110241111), because the products may contain undeclared milk. The recalled products were sold in Alberta and British Columbia.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Tesco recalls Tesco Free From Pure Oat Fruit Muesli (450g; Best before 20 May 2012, 22 May 2012, 18 June 2012, 19 June 2012) and Tesco Free From Pure Porridge Oats (450g; Best before 22 July 2012, 25 July 2012, 17 August 2012, 18 August 2012, 8 September 2012), because the products may contain low levels of gluten.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Asda recalls Asda Chosen by You Oat Muesli (Free From), 450g (Best before 03/08/12) and Asda Chosen by You Porridge Oats (Free From), 450g (Best before 02/08/12 and 07/09/12), because the products may contain undeclared wheat gluten.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Lebanon): The Ministry of Health is investigating a number of reports of food poisoning among people in Kesrouan who ate Arabic sweets from a shop in the area, according to a story on Now Lebanon.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Fonterra Brands (New Zealand) Ltd recalls Mainland Tasty Cheese cracked pepper processed slices (500g, 700g, & 1kg blocks; various Best before dates), after a metal fragment was found in a single pack of cheese.   • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Insight Pharmaceuticals recalls Nostrilla 12-Hour Nasal Decongestant (Batch/Lot 11G075), due to the potential presence of a microbial contaminant that exceeds product specifications and may result in infection in individuals with a compromised immune system or those with chronic lung conditions.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The Cherry Company, Ltd (Honolulu, HI) that a July 2011 inspection revealed a serious violation of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Paramount Muffins, LLC (Newark, NJ) that a May/June 2011 inspection of the company’s manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Postres de Aqui, Inc. (San Juan, PR) that a March/April 2011 inspection of the company’s food product manufacturing facility revealed that the firm’s products are not labeled in accordance with the Food Labelling regulation.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Metro Ontario Inc. (Etobicoke, ON) recalls unwrapped, unlabeled cantaloupes sold from Food Basics, 2452 Sheppard Ave. E., North York, Ontario on September 12, 2011, because the cantaloupes may be contaminated with Salmonella.

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd. recalls Sainsbury’s Freefrom Pure Oats, 450g (Best before July, August, and September 2012), after testing finds low levels of undeclared wheat gluten in some packets.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Delhaize Belgique recalls Delhaize brand Frozen Cocktail Shrimp (500g; 51/60 size; Product of China; Lot #1072365; Best before 23/05/2013), due to the presence of antibiotic residues in excess of permitted limits.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark); Jensen & Köppen ApS recalls United Parsley (120g; Lot 1209; Product of Italy), due to Salmonella contamination.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1271): Salmonella in paan leaves (betel) from India; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1272): Yersinia enterocolitica in chilled chicken wings from Germany; distributed to Italy.

  • Food Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Food Safety ordered the temporary closure of the fish portion of PARKnSHOP Superstore (Tsuen Wan, New Territories), after Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor serotype Ogawa was found in a water sample taken from a fish tank inside the shop.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a suspected food poisoning outbreak involving 29 students and staff from a primary school in Sham Shui Po.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): Analysis carried out by the Therapeutic Goods Administration has confirmed the presence of sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) in Black Ant Capsules. This product has not been approved for sale in Australia, but can be purchased over the Internet.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): Analysis carried out by the Therapeutic Goods Administration has confirmed the presence of sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) in Qing Tian Zhu tablets. This product has not been approved for sale in Australia, but can be purchased over the Internet.

  • Allergy Alert: Strong America Ltd (New York) recalls Huipu Chinese Wolfberry (5.28 oz clear plastic package), due to the presence of undeclared sulfites. The recalled Wolfberry was distributed in Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Albany, NY.
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): USDA issues updated retail distribution list for ground turkey recalled by Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation due to contamination with antibiotic-resistant Salmonella Heidelberg.
  • Food Safety Recall: Safeway recalls Jumbo Cantaloupes from the Rocky Ford region of Colorado (supplied by Jensen Farms; sold between August 30 and September 6), because the cantaloupes may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The melons were sold in Safeway stores in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico (Aztec and Farmington), South Dakota and Wyoming.
  • Food Safety Recall: Del Bueno (Grandview, WA) recalls Queso Fresco Casero Fresh Cheese (16-oz. pkg; Date stamp Sept 14, 2011), because the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled cheese was sold in retail markets in Washington and at the Pasco, WA flea market.
  • Outbreak Alert: The City of Lubbock Texas has issued a health alert regarding a Cheddars restaurant employee who contracted hepatitis A. According to Marler Blog, the city is offering a free Hepatitis A vaccine clinic to anyone who ate at Cheddars during August 31st to September 8th, inclusive.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Qualitest Pharmaceuticals recalls multiple lots of Cyclafem, Emoquette, Gildess, Orsythia, Previfem and Tri-Previfem oral contraceptives, due to a packaging error that makes the lot number and expiry date no longer visible. Please navigate to the Qualitest site for a list of affected lot numbers.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Five Continents International Ltd. recalls Hong Kong Zhi Zun Fu Gui Moon Cake (750g; Exp 20/10/2011), due to the presence of undeclared egg.
  • Allergy Alert: European Market Bakery recalls various European Market Bakery breads, due to the presence of undeclared milk.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Due to a packaging error, some packs of Cow and Gate Little Gourmet meals labelled (on outer sleeve) as Tender Beef Stroganoff; best before 24.6.2012; 2 x 200g bowls in an outer sleeve contained two bowls of Little Gourmet Tuscan Style Chicken Tagliatelle instead of the Tender Beef Stroganoff. This product may be unsafe for consumers who have an allergy or intolerance to egg, wheat or gluten.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): WIOS Food ApS recalls Apple Pie, Tarte aux Pommes (Product of Spain; 400g; Lot #1193C; Expiry 25/9-2011), because it contains excessive propylene glycol.
  • Food Safety Recall (Scotland): Tower Bakery recalls nine varieties of savoury product (use-by dates up to and including 29 September 2011), because the products were labelled with incorrect date codes.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): Carrefour recalls Engagement Qualité Carrefour Petit Munster Fermier and Assortiment de Fromages au Lait Cru (sold between 25/08/11 and 13/09/2011, after Listeria monocytogenes was found in the cheese.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): UCB Pharma recalls VIMPAT, 15mg/ml (200ml vials; all lots; Product of Germany), after a precipitate was observed in certain vials.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Spain): UCB Pharma S.A. recalls VIMPAT 15mg/ml (200ml vials; all lots; produced by UCB Pharma GmbH, Germany), due to the appearance of precipitate in some vials.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): Janssen recalls Eprex 2000 IU/ml (Lot #AHS4T00; Expiry January 2012), due to an elevated concentration of active agent.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1245): Glass fragments in glass bottles containing cider from the United Kingdom, manufactured in Belgium; distributed to the United Kingdom.

  • Outbreak Alert (India): Thirty-seven girls at a Malegaon school were hospitalized for food poisoning after consuming khichdi at a midday meal.

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Little Creatures Brewing Pty Ltd. recalls Little Creatures Pale Ale Pint (Between 7 JUL 12 and 5 Aug 12), Little Creatures Bright Ale Pint (7 APR 12) and Little Creatures The Dreadnought Single Batch Pint (4 MAY 12), because a packaging fault has resulted in the potential for glass contamination.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Asahi Beverages recalls various Apple Time and Homebrand juices, due to the possible presence of metal shavings. Please refer to the recall notice for details of the affected products.
  • Outbreak Alert (Australia): South Australia Health has received notification of two cases of Shiga-E. coli (STEC) infections and one case of Haemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) in children who attended the Royal Adelaide Show. The child with HUS is receiving treatment in hospital, and is in serious but stable condition. Two of the three infected children are known to have been in contact with animals at the Animal Nursery during the Show.
  • Medical Device Safety Recall Update (Australia): Johnson & Johnson Medical Pty Ltd. recalls LifeScan OneTouch Verio blood glucose meter system kits, manufactured by LifeScan Inc., USA. Users are experiencing repeated ‘Error 2’ warning messages when used in conditions of high temperature and/or humidity due to contamination on one of the meter’s components, which occurred during the manufacturing process.
