Chapter 6. Birth of a Pathogen

Outbreak/Illness Investigations

CANADA (Update): Hamilton (Ontario) Public Health identified 29 confirmed cases of salmonellosis and 57 probable cases linked to the Piper Arms restaurant in Stoney Creek, Ontario. Nine people were hospitalized. Laboratory testing confirmed Salmonella Enteritidis as the causative pathogen. Follow-up investigation determined that cross-contamination within the restaurant kitchen was the primary transmission mechanism, rather than a single contaminated incoming food item.
