Outbreak/Illness Investigations

NORWAY: The National Institute of Public Health is investigating an outbreak of 23 cases of Salmonella Newport infections believed to be linked to consumption of organic alfalfa sprouts.

USA: FDA and CDC are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections linked to American/slicer cucumbers grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. in Sonora, Mexico. The outbreak has affected 68 people in 19 states. Eighteen people have been hospitalized. There have been no deaths reported so far.

Food Safety Recall: 4Earth Farms recalls multiple brands of Organic Vegetable Medley, Conventional Vegetable Medley, and Organic Whole Carrots due to possible E. coli O121:H19 contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: Gracie’s Kitchens recalls all ready-to-eat fruit and vegetable products manufactured at the facility from 11/4-11/13/24 due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: SunFed Produce, LLC recalls all sizes of whole fresh American cucumbers packaged in bulk cardboard containers labeled with the “SunFed” label or in a generic white box or black plastic crate with a sticker that provides the implicated grower’s name, “Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.,” due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Food Safety Recall: Curio Spice Co. recalls Curio Spice Co. brand Grains of Paradise (Korerima) (1.25 oz jar; Batch No. PKRRM02202024; Better by 02/20/2027; UPC 672975171032) due to possible mold contamination.

Food Safety Recall: 1728435 Ontario Inc. recalls O’Ya hoho brand Enoki mushrooms (200g; Batch code 240907; UPC 8 57588 00231 1) due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Food Safety Recall Update: Grimmway Farms recalls multiple brands of organic carrots due to potential for E. coli O121 contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for an updated list of affected products.

Food Safety Advisory: CFIA warns consumers that SunFed Produce, LLC has recalled all sizes of whole fresh American cucumbers packaged in bulk cardboard containers labeled with the “SunFed” label or in a white box or black plastic crate with a sticker that provides the implicated grower’s name, “Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.” due to potential Salmonella contamination. These cucumbers have been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses in the USA. Some of the recalled products were distributed in Canada.

Food Safety Recall: Fromagerie des Grondines (Deschambault-Grondines, QC) recalls Festin or Le Festin brand cheese (Lot 301024; Sold up to 27 November 2024) because the product was conditions that represent a risk to consumers.

Food Safety Recall: Agrigourmet (Montréal, QC) recalls TERRINE DE LAPIN / Rabbit terrine (250 ml; Sold up to 25 November 2024) due to potential for growth of Clostridium botulinum.

Mexican cucumbers likely source of new Salmonella outbreak

Cucumbers imported from Mexico are the probable source of a 68-case outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium according to information released today by the CDC.

The cucumbers were grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. in Sonora, Mexico, and sold between October 12, 2024 and November 26, 2024.

Eighteen people have been hospitalized. There have been no deaths reported so far.

Outbreak victims range in age from <1 to 98 years of age. Approximately two-thirds of the victims are female.

Outbreak cases have been reported in 19 states, including: Alaska, California, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Six illness sub-clusters were identified at two assisted living facilities, three school districts, and one restaurant. An illness sub-cluster is a group of unrelated people who all ate at the same location or event, such as a restaurant, long-term care facility, or school.

On November 27, 2024, Sunfed Produce, LLC recalled all sizes of whole fresh American cucumbers packaged in bulk cardboard containers labeled with the “SunFed” label or in a generic white box or black plastic crate with a sticker that provides the implicated grower’s name.

The whole fresh American cucumbers were sold by SunFed and other importers and shipped to customers in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.

The cucumbers were supplied to both retailers and food service operators.

On November 28, 2024, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a statement alerting Canadians to the SunFed cucumber recall.

Second time around

This is the second time in less than a year that cucumbers have been the source of a Salmonella outbreak.

Earlier this year, Florida-grown cucumbers were blamed for more than 550 Salmonella infections between March 11, 2024, and July 26, 2024, in an outbreak that spread over 34 states and the District of Columbia and sent 155 people to hospital.

CDC’s advice to consumers

Do not eat any recalled cucumbers.

Throw them away or return them to where you bought them.
Look for a sticker that shows “SunFed Mexico” as the place where cucumbers were grown.
If you bought whole fresh American cucumbers during October 12 and November 26 and can’t tell where they are from throw them away.

Wash items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled cucumbers.

Use hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

Call your healthcare provider if you have any of these severe Salmonella symptoms:

Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
Bloody diarrhea
So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
Signs of dehydration, such as:
Not peeing much
Dry mouth and throat
Feeling dizzy when standing up

CDC’s advice to businesses

Do not sell or serve recalled cucumbers grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. in Sonora, Mexico, including recalled cucumbers from SunFed Produce, LLC.
Wash and sanitize items and surfaces that may have come in contact with recalled cucumbers.
When possible, notify customers who purchased recalled cucumbers.

Outbreak/Illness Investigations

USA: CDC reports eleven confirmed cases of Listeria monocytogenes in a four-state outbreak that began in 2021. One person has died, and nine have been hospitalized. The illnesses are linked to consumption of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products from Yu Shang Food, a USDA-inspected establishment.

USA: FDA is investigating a new outbreak of 63 cases of Salmonella Typhimurium linked to a not yet identified product.

United States

Recall Canceled: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has determined that a laboratory error incorrectly caused the October 18, 2024 recall announcement concerning Church Brothers Farms’ Green Onions. The products from Church Brothers did not contain Salmonella and the recall has been rescinded.

Food Safety Recall: Handsome Brook Farms recalls Kirkland Signature brandOrganic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs (Julian code 327; Use by Jan 6, 2025; UPC 9661910680) due to potential for Salmonella contamination. The recalled eggs were distributed into 25 Costco stores in the States of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee beginning November 22, 2024.

Food Safety Recall: Pero Family Farms Food Company LLC recalls Pero Family Farms Squash Sliced Zucchinni & Yellow Squash (11 oz; Lot #346918; Expiration date 10/28/2024) due to potential for Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Rise N’ Shine Farm, Inc. that an October 23-27, 2023 inspection of the company’s shell egg farm and egg processing facility found serious violations of the Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage, and Transportation regulation (the shell egg regulation), Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 118 (21 CFR 118), as well as sanitation concerns.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Tova Industries, LLC that an August 5, 2024 through August 8, 2024, inspection of the company’s dry goods and ready to eat (RTE) foods facility revealed serious violations of the Emergency Permit Control regulation (Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 108 (21 CFR 108)) and Acidified Foods regulation (21 CFR Part 114).
