OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: CDC reports that contact with backyard poultry resulted in 1,135 reported Salmonella infections, 273 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths since the beginning of 2021. Cases were reported in 48 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. CDC reminds the public that you can get sick from touching your backyard poultry or anything in their environment and then touching your mouth or food and swallowing Salmonella germs. Children should always be supervised around backyard poultry.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (SWEDEN): The Swedish Public Health Agency reports that an outbreak of 52 cases of Salmonella Coeln infections across 14 regions of the country was likely linked to a contaminated batch of fresh sprouts delivered to grocery stores, wholesalers and commercial kitchens at the end of August. The outbreak is now over.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (AUSTRALIA): Commonwealth, state and territory food regulators and health authorities are investigating an increase in cases of Vibrio parahaemolyticus linked to the consumption of raw Pacific oysters (Magallana gigas) produced in Coffin Bay, SA. Trace back activities have identified oyster production areas in Coffin Bay as the source of the oysters consumed by the cases. The outbreak includes 36 reported cases in South Australia, 17 cases in Western Australia and 8 cases in Victoria. The Coffin Bay oyster harvesting area has been closed, and consumers are advised not to eat raw Pacific oysters from Coffin Bay, including fresh and frozen products.

Food Safety Recall (Australia): SA Health has issued an emergency order to recall raw Pacific oysters (Magallana gigas) produced in Coffin Bay, SA, including fresh and frozen products (All production dates from and including 4 September 2021 up to and including 16 November 2021) due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus contamination.

United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: CDC reports an outbreak consisting of 10 cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections in seven states. Two people have been hospitalized. Minnesota officials found E. coli O157:H7 in a package of leftover Josie’s Organics baby spinach with a “Best if Used By” date of October 23, 2021 collected from a sick person’s home. FDA is tracing back the supply of the baby spinach in the positive product sample. Whole Genome Sequencing is under way to determine whether the strain of E. coli O157:H7 found in the spinach sample is a match to the outbreak strain recovered from patients.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: CDC reports an additional 84 new cases of Salmonella Oranienburg infections, bringing the total in the onion-related outbreak to 892. One hundred eighty-three (183) people have been hospitalized, and cases have been reported in 38 states and Puerto Rico. The investigation is ongoing.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (SWEDEN): The Swedish Public Health Agency reports 41 cases of Salmonella infections linked to consumption of sesame-based products (tahini and halva) from Syria since July 2019. Several different outbreak strains have been recovered from patients and from a number of different batches of tahini and halwa from the producer Alburj. Consumers are urged to check their pantries for any of the products listed in the National Food Administration notice and to discard any potentially contaminated products or return them to the store.
