The affected products were manufactured in Canada and distributed to retailers across Canada.

Pet food for domestic consumption not regulated in Canada

Pet food imported into Canada from other countries must meet specific safety standards. Likewise, pet food manufactured in Canada for export to the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union must meet the food safety standards for those countries.

However, pet food and pet treats manufactured in Canada and distributed solely in Canada is not subject to food safety inspection or regulation by any Canadian government authority.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada will only post recall notices for pet foods and pet treats in the event of a risk to human health.

  3. My cat puked up a huge meal right in front of me. I have checked the best before dates and the bag is on the recall list. Are there any lasting effects that I should be watching for. Can I get a refund?

    1. Hello Donna,
Mars Petcare has been totally uninformative as to the reason for the recall other than saying that one of the raw ingredients didn’t meet its standards. The problem could be anything: an out-of-spec vitamin or mineral supplement, a biological toxin (eg aflatoxin), an adulterant (eg. pentobarbital) or a bacterial contaminant such as Salmonella. Only Mars Petcare and their ingredient supplier know the answer. Pet food manufactured for domestic consumption is NOT subject to inspection by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, because pet food does not meet the definition for “food” under Canada’s Food, Drugs & Cosmetics Act, nor does it meet the definition for “animal feed” under the Health of Animals Act.

You should be able to get a refund for the recalled food either from the retailer or from the company. I have included the company’s contact information in the last paragraph of my blog post.

If you have any concerns about any lasting effects on your cat, you might want to give your veterinarian a phone call.
