Food Safety Alert: FDA advises restaurants and food retailers not to sell and to dispose of oysters and consumers not to eat oysters from Future Seafoods, Inc. (PE 4217 SP), Prince Edward Island, Canada, from harvest area PE9B on 10/10/2023, and shipped on 10/10/2023 to importers in FL, MA, MD, ME, PA, and VA, due to the possible presence of Salmonella and E. coli. Future Seafoods, Inc. has not yet initiated a recall.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: CDC declares the outbreaks of Salmonella linked to backyard poultry are over. In all, these outbreaks accounted for reported 1,072 illnesses and 247 hospitalizations in 48 states and Puerto Rico.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: FDA reports that the number of confirmed cases of Salmonella Thompson in a multistate outbreak of unknown origin has risen to 72 from 67. Traceback investigation has been initiated, but no food source has yet been identified.

Food Safety Recall: Moody Dunbar Inc recalls HEB CUT SWEET POTATOES IN LIGHT SYRUP (29 oz (822g); Batch code DK21J 4ALC6; Best by OCT 2025) and SYSCO Classic Cut Sweet Potatoes (108 oz (3.06 kg); Batch codes DK21J49LC8 & DK21J49LC9; Best by OCT 2025) due to a malfunctioning retort chart resulting in no data being recorded during the production run.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA issues Warning Letter to Lathem Family Farms, Inc. of Pendergrass, GA, listing multiple violations of the federal Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage, and Transportation regulation, including numerous instances of Salmonella contamination in the company’s poultry houses and within its processing facility environment.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Denmark): The Statens Serum Institut is investigating an outbreak of six confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections reported from March 27, 2023, onwards. Five of the six patients have been hospitalized, including one who is suffering from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The cases are spread across most of Denmark. The outbreak strain is reported to be sequence type 11 and is positive for Shiga toxin type Stx2a. The possible source of the outbreak strain is still under investigation.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Norway): The Public Health Institute warns that Norway’s outbreak of shiga toxin-producting E. coli infections is not yet over. The outbreak strain has been detected in 20 people so far, eleven of them under 13 years of age. Seven of the children have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome. The outbreak strain was found in hamburger, which has been recalled together with other minced meat and stuffing products that contain the same raw ingredients.
