Outbreak/Illness Investigations

Europe (Austria, Denmark, Germany): Health authorities report that an outbreak of about 200 cases of Salmonella enterica serotype Umbilo (S. Umbilo) that affected several European countries mainly between July and September 2024 was traced to rocket salad and baby spinach from Italy.

Sweden (Update): The Public Health Authority reports that an outbreak of 92 cases of Salmonella Typhimurium (sequence type 36) infections may be linked to contaminated alfalfa sprouts.

USA (Update): CDC reports that the Listeria monocytogenes outbreak traced to deli meats produced by Boars Head is now over. The outbreak killed ten individuals and sent 60 to hospital. In all, 61 confirmed outbreak cases were reported from 19 states.

USA (Minnesota): The Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Agriculture report that raw ground beef products supplied to restaurants by Wolverine Packing Co. (Detroit, MI) are behind an outbreak of 15 cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections in the state.

United States

Food Safety Recall Update: Grimmway Farms recalls four additional bag sizes of organic whole carrots to its earlier recall of organic whole carrots and organic baby carrots due to potential E. coli O121:H19 contamination. Food Safety Recall: F&S Fresh Foods recalls Whole Foods Market Organic Carrot Sticks and Whole Foods Market Organic Carrots & Celery (15 oz; Codes “GH” followed by three digits ranging from 236 – 284; Best if used by dates from 9/1/24 to 10/19/24) due to potential E. coli O121:H19 contamination.

Food Safety Recall Update: Yu Shang Food, Inc. recalls approximately 72,240 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for an updated list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: Wolverine Packing Co. recalls approximately 167,277 pounds of ground beef products due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: Joseph Seviroli, LLC recalls Chicken Alfredo Kit (Item 16769427; Codes 54238, 54239, 54247, 54248, 54249, 54252, 54263, 54264, 54265, 54266, 54274, 54275, 54281, 54282) due to potential for Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Public Health Alert: FSIS issues Public Health Alert for INCA GRASA COMESTIBLE DE SEBO BOVINO / Beef tallow product (1 kg or 500g; All dates) because the product was illegally imported from Mexico and is ineligible for entry into the United States.

Food Safety Recall: Winkler Meats Lts. recalls Winkler’s brand Breakfast Sausage (Variable sizes; Lots 032231024 & 032331024; Best before 2025 JA 17 & 2025 JA, respectively) and Winkler’s brand Smoked Turkey Thighs (450g; Lot 213331024; Best before 2024-DE-27; UPC 0 63278 00082 0) due to foreign matter contamination (pieces of metal).

Food Safety Recall: Grimmway Farms recalls 365 Whole Foods Market Organic Carrots (454g, 907g, 2.3 kg; All products sold from August 14 to October 23, 2024 inclusively) and 365 Whole Foods Market Organic Baby Carrots (454g; 907g; 340g; All Best Before dates from September 11 to November 2, 2024, inclusively) due to possible E. coli O121 contamination.

Allergy Alert (Ireland): FSAI warns consumers that Deluxe White Chocolate & Berry Cheesecake, frozen (480g; Batch code 12/06/2025; Product of UK) contains undeclared gluten, eggs, soybeans, milk

Food Safety Recall (Ireland): Sheridans Cheesemongers recalls Marcel Petite Mont D’or cheese (All pack sizes; All batches sold between 01/10/2024 and 21/11/2024; Product of France) due to Yersinia enterocolitica contamination.

Food Safety Recall (Ireland): Dunnes Stores recalls Dunnes Stores Irish Chicken Sweet & Spicy Wings (500g; Batch code 24 290; Use by 26 Oct 2024; Product of Ireland) due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Food Safety Recall (UK): Morrisons recalls Morrisons Crushed Garlic (75g; Best before 19 October 2025) because an ingredient has been omitted from the product that prevents microbiological growth and therefore presents a potential risk to consumers.

Food Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Noja Fine Trade Limited recalls Fruitiere des Jarrons brand Mont d’Or Fruitiere des Jarrons Cheese (500g; Best before December 16, 2024; Product of France) due to possible Yersinia enterocolitica contamination.

Outbreak/Illness Investigations

Europe (Multiple Countries): Denmark’s Statens Serum Institut has recorded 23 cases of Salmonella Umbilo ST2014 in an outbreak that has affected individuals in several countries, including Germany and Austria. Arugula lettuce is the suspected source of the outbreak.

USA: FDA has opened an investigation into a new outbreak of 3 cases of Salmonella Liverpool linked to a not yet identified product.

USA (Connecticut): The Connecticut Department of Health has confirmed two cases of Campylobacter infections linked to consumption of bottled raw milk.

United States

Allergy Alert: USDA/FSIS issues Public Health Alert for Cranberry Chicken Salad with white meat chicken (12 oz; Use by 10/25/24) due to undeclared wheat.

Food Safety Recall: BrucePac recalls approximately 9,986,245 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: Nature View Dairy (Bridgewater, CT) recalls all raw milk products from retail distribution locations in Connecticut, including farm stores, natural food, and grocers due to Campylobacter contamination.

FDA Enforcement Action: Federal Court enters consent decree against Rizo Lopez Foods Inc. following multistate outbreak of listeriosis linked to queso fresco and cotija cheese products

Outbreak/Illness Investigations

DENMARK (Update): The Statens Serum Institut has now confirmed 23 cases of Salmonella Umbilo in an outbreak that has affected patients throughout the country, but primarily west of the Great Belt. The source of the infections has not yet been identified.

USA (Update): The CDC reports two additional cases of Listeria monocytogenes and one more death in the outbreak linked to consumption of deli-sliced meats manufactured by Boar’s Head. As of September 23, a total of 59 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria have been reported from 19 states. Ten deaths have now been reported. All 59 victims were hospitalized.

United States

Allergy Alert: Truly Good Foods recalls Grabeez The Big Cheese Snack Mix cups (3.25 oz; Best before 041625) due to undeclared almonds and cashews.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Brewing Market Coffee that a December 14, 2023, through January 25, 2024 inspection of the company’s acidified manufacturing facility revealed serious deviations from the Emergency Permit Control regulation and Acidified Foods regulations.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Restorative Botanicals, LLC that a November 27 through December 12, 2023 inspection of the company’s facility revealed serious violations of the FDA’s regulations for Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) in Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling, or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements.
