United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: CDC reports an outbreak consisting of 10 cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections in seven states. Two people have been hospitalized. Minnesota officials found E. coli O157:H7 in a package of leftover Josie’s Organics baby spinach with a “Best if Used By” date of October 23, 2021 collected from a sick person’s home. FDA is tracing back the supply of the baby spinach in the positive product sample. Whole Genome Sequencing is under way to determine whether the strain of E. coli O157:H7 found in the spinach sample is a match to the outbreak strain recovered from patients.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: CDC reports an additional 84 new cases of Salmonella Oranienburg infections, bringing the total in the onion-related outbreak to 892. One hundred eighty-three (183) people have been hospitalized, and cases have been reported in 38 states and Puerto Rico. The investigation is ongoing.

Allergy Alert: Spice N’ More Corp. recalls Salma Natural Curry Powder (13 oz; Lot #H092021; Best by 12/20/23) due to undeclared peanuts.

Food Safety Recall Update: Potandon Produce L.L.C. recalls Green Giant Fresh to include 3lb. and 5lb. bags of whole yellow onions and 2 lb. bags of whole white onions shipped between July 15 and August 22, 2021 to a UNFI retail distribution center in Champaign, Illinois, due to potential Salmonella contamination. Food Safety Recall: KraftHeinz recalls Kool-Aid Tropical Punch Mix (82.5 oz; Best if used by 2023-08-31 and 2023-09-01) due to foreign matter (small pieces of metal or glass) contamination.

Allergy Alert: Exclusive Candy & Novelty Ltd. recalls Twinkle Baker Décor brand Frosting Tube/White/Vanilla (80g; Lot codes 20146L, 20177L, 20218L, 20245L; UPC 0 6063190651 5) due to undeclared milk.

Food Safety Recall: Verger La Perle Rouge (Saint-Hyacinthe, QC) recalls JUS DE POMME NON PASTEURISÉ / Unpasteurized apple juice (375 ml & 1 L; Sold from 30 October 2021 to 16 November 2021) due to mycotoxin (patulin) contamination.

Food Safety Recall: Les Aliments MHD (Québec, QC) recalls PIMENT DU LION / Lion peppers (200 ml; Sold up to 17 November 2021) because the product was not processed and packed in a manner that would ensure its safety.

Food Safety Recall: Boucherie St-Louis (Bois-des-Filion) recalls SAUMON FUMÉ À FROID / Cold-smoked salmon (variable weights; Sold up to 16 November 2021) due to lack of mandatory storage temperature labeling.

Europe

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (SWEDEN): The Swedish Public Health Agency reports 41 cases of Salmonella infections linked to consumption of sesame-based products (tahini and halva) from Syria since July 2019. Several different outbreak strains have been recovered from patients and from a number of different batches of tahini and halwa from the producer Alburj. Consumers are urged to check their pantries for any of the products listed in the National Food Administration notice and to discard any potentially contaminated products or return them to the store.
