Outbreak/Illness Investigations

Denmark: The Statens Serum Institut reports a new outbreak of 52 cases of Salmonella monophasic Typhimurium sequence type 34 in April-June 2024. The source of the outbreak has not yet been identified.

United Kingdom (Update): The UK Health Security Agency reports an additional 45 outbreak cases of E. coli O145 infections, bringing the total number of cases to 256. All currently confirmed cases had symptom onset dates before 31 May. Cases have been reported in England (168), Scotland (56), Wales (29), and Northern Ireland (3). Investigations have highlighted pre-packaged sandwich products containing lettuce as the likely source of the outbreak.

USA: FDA has launched an investigation into a new outbreak of 47 cases of Salmonella Typhimurium infections linked to a not yet identified product.

United States

Food Safety Alert: FDA advises restaurants and retailers not to serve or sell and consumers not to eat certain IQF oysters from Republic of Korea potentially contaminated with Norovirus. Please refer to the FDA notice for additional details.

Food Safety Recall: Snapchill LLC recalls all canned coffee products manufactured by the company, within expiration date due to potential for growth of Clostridium botulinum. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Pet Treat Safety Recall: TDBBS LLC recalls Green Tripe, Barkworthies Brand (7oz bag; Lots WO151768 & WO152373; Best by Feb–Mar 2026), Green Tripe, Best Bully Sticks Brand (2 lb bag; Lots WO152669, WO153321 & WO152107; Best by Mar–Aug 2026) and Green Tripe, Best Bully Sticks Brand (5 lb bag; Lots WO151401, WO152319 & WO153179; Best by Jan–Apr 2026) due to potential foreign matter contamination (metal objects).

Allergy Alert: Locally Baked Outlet Ltd. recalls Locally Baked Outlet brand Keto Salted Caramel Cupcakes (3-pack; Refrigeration best before date July 15/24; Frozen best before date Nov 10/24; UPC 0 33204 92117 8) due to undeclared peanut.

Allergy Alert: Johnsonville, LLC recalls Johnsonville brand Beer Bratwurst (375g; Best before 2024-JN-05, 2024-JN-19, 2024-JL-17, 2024-AU-05, 2024-AU-20, 2024-AU-29; UPC 0 77782 68295 3) due to undeclared gluten.

Food Safety Action Alert (UK): Food Businesses who have purchased products from Block and Cleaver of Swanley, Kent should remove all beef, chicken and pork meat and meat products from sale because the meats may not have been produced in accordance with GB food law requirements and therefore may be unsafe. United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA, CDC and state and local partners are investigating an outbreak of 162 Salmonella Africana illnesses in 25 states and the District of Columbia. Fifty-four of the outbreak patients have been hospitalized. The outbreak is believed to be linked to consumption of cucumbers grown in Florida.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA and CDC are investigating an outbreak of 158 Salmonella Braenderup illnesses. This outbreak shares several similarities with the Salmonella Africana outbreak, including where and when illnesses occurred and the demographics of ill people. Investigators are working to determine whether the two outbreaks could be linked to the same food. 

Food Safety Advisory: FDA advises restaurants and food retailers not to serve or sell and to dispose of, and consumers not to eat, oysters and bay clams harvested from growing areas in Netarts Bay and Tillamook Bay, OR (harvested on or after 5/28/24), and all shellfish species from growing areas in Willapa Bay, WA (Stony Point, harvested between 5/26/24 and 5/30/24; Bay Center, harvested between 5/29/24 and 5/30/24; and Bruceport, harvested between 5/29/24 and 5/30/24), and distributed to AZ, CA, CO, HI, NV, NY, OR, and WA because they may be contaminated with the toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP).

Allergy Alert: New Seasons Market recalls Strawberry Rhubarb Bakewell Tart (Sold from 03/22/24 to 06/03/24; All best if used by dates) due to undeclared almonds. The product was sold at the Bakery and Pastry departments in New Seasons Market stores located in Oregon and Washington.

Food Safety Recall: JBR (KR-15-SP) Tongyeong, Republic of Korea recalls all frozen half-shell oysters (harvested between 11/26/2023 and 2/14/2024; processed between 11/27/2023 and 2/15/2024; Lot codes B231126, B231128, B231129, B231130, B231201, B231202, B231204, B231205, B231206, B231209, B231225, B231226, B231227, B240102, B240103, B240104, B240109, B240111, B240114, B240201, B240203, B240204, and B240214) due to potential Norovirus contamination.

Food Safety Recall: South American Meat Inc. (aka 5Gogi LLC) recalls approximately 20,111 pounds of various eligible frozen raw beef products that were not presented to FSIS for import reinspection upon entry into the United States. Infant Formula Safety Recall: Dairy Manufacturers Inc. expands its earlier recall to include Crecelac Infant 0-12 (12.4 oz; Lot code 24 039 1 CHE 352-1; Expiry date 08/2025; UPC 8 50042 40847 6; Manufactured at D.M. Mexicana Sa De Cv in Monterey, Mexico) due to Cronobacter spp. contamination.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (Denmark): Statens Serum Institute and the ECDC report that the strain of Listeria monocytogenes (sequence type 1607) associated with a multi-year long outbreak of 17 confirmed illnesses in Denmark is also responsible for one illness in Germany and two in Italy. The outbreak strain has been identified in ready-to-eat fish products from a Danish company. Five of the twenty outbreak victims have died (one death unrelated to the infection). Eight patients out of thirteen interviewed recalled having eaten eating ready-to-eat fish products such as smoked or gravad fish in the month before falling ill.

OUTBREAK ALERT (Germany): Stuttgart health officials report an outbreak of more than 800 cases of Norovirus linked to attendance at the Stuttgart spring festival, according to a BBC report.
