Supermarket chains announce recalls

An outbreak of Salmonella Javiana has infected 345 individuals across 27 states since June 19, 2026, according to the CDC.

Thirty-six people have been hospitalized.

Epidemiological investigations by the CDC and its partners in various states identified jalapeño peppers as the most likely source of the outbreak.

FDA traceback investigations determined that the implicated peppers were grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed in the USA by Coast Citrus Distributors. The imported peppers were supplied to Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA.

Chipotle has switched to a different supplier of jalapeño peppers and is no longer using the peppers supplied by Coast Citrus. QDOBA has also stopped serving these peppers in their restaurants and has removed them from its stores.

Recalls

Coast Citrus has agreed to recall the remaining product in distribution, and is in the process of identifying and contacting affected customers, according to the FDA.

Although the company has not released a public recall notice, several supermarket chains already have posted recall information on their websites.

What you need to know

If you have any jalapeño peppers at home, do not use them. The FDA is still working to determine the extent of retail distribution of the jalapeño peppers linked to this outbreak.

If you have eaten jalapeño peppers or a product (such as pico de gallo) that might contain jalapeños, either in a restaurant or at home, and you begin to experience symptoms of a Salmonella infection, contact your healthcare provider. Symptoms will usually begin between six hours and six days after you eat a contaminated food.

The CDC lists the following symptoms to watch for:

• Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
• Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
• Bloody diarrhea
• So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
• Signs of dehydration, such as:
  • Not peeing much
  • Dry mouth and throat
  • Feeling dizzy when standing up.
