Outbreak/Illness Investigations

DENMARK (Update): The Statens Serum Institut has now received reports of 21 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis infections in an outbreak that has been linked to a common school meal scheme. The specific food item behind the outbreak remains under investigation.

USA (California): The California Department of Public Health is investigating an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 associated with beef kofta (seasoned ground beef kebabs) served at The Kebab Shop restaurant chain locations in Northern and Southern California. As of May 19, 2026, nine California residents, among them six children, have been confirmed to be part of the outbreak. Five of the victims have been hospitalized, and two of those are suffering from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The Kebab Shop has voluntarily paused sales of grilled beef kofta at all locations.

USA (New York): New York City Department of Health is investigating an outbreak cluster linked to Hepatitis A virus (HAV) cases associated with consumption of fresh-frozen blood clams (Concha Negra) from Ecuador.

Food Safety Alert (Update): FDA is advising restaurants and food retailers not to serve or sell and consumers not to eat La Serranita-brand concha negra (black shell) fresh frozen shell meat from Ecuador because it may be contaminated with hepatitis A virus (HAV).

Pet Food Safety Recall: Raaw Energy expands an earlier recall of raw dog food products (Produced between 7/17/25 and 12/23/25) due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Allergy Alert: Gestion Le Subtil (Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, QC) recalls Végé-pâté (200g; All lots) due to undeclared mustard.

Outbreak/Illness Investigations

CANADA (Manitoba): The Manitoba Health Service reports 601 cases of hepatitis A have been confirmed across Manitoba since an outbreak was declared in April 2025, with 131 of those cases reported in Winnipeg. Three people have died, 5 were admitted to ICU and were hospitalized.

DENMARK: The Statens Serum Institut reports 11 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis since April 2026 in an outbreak that has been linked to a common school meal scheme serving several schools in the national capital region. Eight of the eleven victims are children. Median age of outbreak patients is 10 years. The source of the outbreak is under investigation.

INTERNATIONAL: ECDC is tracking a multi-country outbreak of Salmonella Stanley (ST2045) illnesses that has infected 62 people since January 2026. Outbreak cases have been reported by Austria, Czechia, Estonia, France, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. No source has yet been identified, but ECDC says that a common source is likely.

INTERNATIONAL (Cruise): Forty-nine passengers on the Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambition were infected with Norovirus during a cruise that departed Belfast, Northern Ireland on May 8th. The ship was quarantined at port in Bordeaux, France until the French health authorities could confirm the cause of the gastrointestinal illnesses.

USA: FDA reports that a 70-case outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections linked to cantaloupes imported from Guatamala is over. No additional details as to the geographical or demographic distribution of the illnesses was given.

Outbreak/Illness Investigations

TAIWAN): Taoyuan City Government Health Bureau reports 155 cases of staphylococcal food poisoning linked to bento boxes from Ueno BBQ Rice restaurant in Neili, Taoyuan City.

USA (Update): CDC and FDA have closed their investigation into an outbreak of 9 cases of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses linked epidemiologically to raw milk and raw cheddar cheese from RAW FARM LLC. Three of the victims were hospitalized, one suffering from HUS. FDA found a strain of E. coli O157:H7 in a sample of raw cheddar cheese collected as part of its investigation, but the strain did not match that of the current outbreak. Instead, it matched a strain recovered from patients of a different 2025 outbreak investigated by CDC. The source of that outbreak was never determined.

USA (New York): New York Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating a cluster of Hepatitis A virus infections associated with consumption of fresh-frozen blood clams (Concha Negra) from Ecuador. The New York City Department of Health has been investigating HAV cases during the period August 2025 through February 2026.
