United States

  • Allergy Alert: Jonlly Fruits Inc. (Bayamòn, PR) recalls the following Jonlly Fruit and Natural Tropic products (1 gal plastic containers and 64-oz bottles; Expiry dates from March 1,2 012 to July 2, 2012), due to the presence of undeclared sodium caseinate (a milk derivative) in the products: China (Orange), Acerola (Wild Cherry), Uva (Grape), Parcha (Passion Fruit), Fruta (Fruit Punch), Limón (Lemon), Toronja (Grapefruit), Guava-Piña (Guava-Pineapple), Guanábana (Soursop), China Light (Orange Light), Mandarin (Mandarina), and China-Zanahoria (Orange-Carrot). The recalled products were distributed through supermarkets, bakeries and retail stores throughout Puerto Rico.
  • Food Safety Recall: Mazowsze Deli Inc. (Brooklyn, NY) recalls In-store packed (sliced) Herring (1-lb clear plastic container; no lot or date codes), due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold only from the deli’s retail location at 420 Church Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.
  • Food Safety Recall/Alert: Washington State Department of Health is advising consumers not to eat any fresh or frozen shellfish that comes from Korea, because FDA has removed all certified dealers in the Korean Shellfish Sanitation Program from its Interstate Certified Shellfish Shippers List. The action includes fresh or frozen oysters, clams, mussels and scallops; canned products are not affected.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Pasta-Déli 1995 recalls several prepared entrées due to the presence of undeclared wheat, soy or sulfites. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products, which were sold in certain retail establishments in the province of Quebec.
  • Allergy Alert: Upper 49th Imports Inc. recalls Designer Whey Protein Powder – French Vanilla (908g; UPC 8 44334 00187 2; Lot code 4111193187B; ENJOY BY JUL 2013) due to the presence of undeclared gluten. The affected product was sold nationally.
  • Allergy Alert: Tokushin Enterprises Ltd. recalls Ajinomoto Cook Do Shrimp Stir Fry Sauce (110g; UPC 4 901001 102648; Codes up to and including 2013.3.11), due to the presence of undeclared shellfish. The recalled item was distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency releases additional information to aid consumers in the identification of recalled Irresistibles brand beef burgers. Consolidated recall information is available at the E. coli O157:H7 Beef Recall – Canada tab.

Europe

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): McWilliam’s Wine Group Ltd. recalls the following varieties of McWilliam’s 2-Lt Fortified Wine due to the possibility that the flagon mouth may be damaged and glass fragments may be present: Royal Reserve Tawny (Lot codes L2104-58 and L281-41), Cream Apera (Lot code L2103-47), Royal Reserve Medium Dry (Lot code L2102-32), Royal Reserve Sweet (Lot code L2102-33), Royal Reserve Muscat (Lot code L2104-56) and Royal Reserve Dry (Lot code L2102-31). The recalled products were sold in major liquor outlets and some independent liquor stores nationally.

  • Allergy Alert: Euro Foods, Inc., d.b.a. Citterio USA Corp (Freeland, PA) recalls Citterio Rustico Chorizo Spanish Style (7-oz pkg, containing 24 pieces; Lot 659; Expiration date 8/12/12 or 8/12/12; Est 4010) and Citterio Rustico Chorizo Spanish Style (7-oz pkg, containing 24 pieces; Lot 135; Expiration date 11/30/12; Est 4010), due to the presence of undeclared soy protein. The recalled product was distributed to retail establishments and wholesale distributors in Florida, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Tennessee and Texas.
  • Food Safety Recall (from Weekly Enforcement Report): Fresca Foods, Inc. (Louisville, CO) recalls Boulder Ice Cream Organic Chocolate Pudding Ice Cream (3.6-oz; Lot 35587; Best by 03/15/13), Boulder Ice Cream Organic Vanilla (1 pt; Lot 35585; Best by 03/06/13), Boulder Ice Cream Organic Italian Espresso (3.6 oz; Lot 35909; Best by 03/08/13) and Boulder Ice Cream Organic Green Tea (1 pt; Lot 35712; Best by 03/12/13) because the organic raw milk may not be exposed to the full pasteurization controls before being made into ice cream products. The recalled ice cream product were distributed in Colorado and California.
  • Consumer Product Recall: Unilever recalls Suave Professionals® New Keratin Infusion 30 Day Smoothing Kit (3-piece kit; UPC 0-79400-19562; All lots) because of potential consumer misunderstanding of the product’s suitability for certain hair conditions.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: The California Department of Food and Agriculture announces a statewide recall and quarantine order for raw milk, raw skim milk (non-fat), raw cream and raw butter produced by Organic Pastures Dairy (Fresno County, CA) after the state confirmed detection of Campylobacter bacteria in raw cream from the dairy. The California Department of Public Health reports at least 10people with Campylobacter infection were identified throughout California and reported consuming Organic Pastures raw milk prior to illness onset. Outbreak patients are residents of Fresno, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Luis Obispo and Santa Clara counties.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Buncombe County Department of Health reports that tests conducted by the North Carolina Department of Public Health confirm the unopened bag of culture that was added to tempeh tested positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella Paratyphi B. There have been 63 cases of Salmonella Paratyphi B infections reported to the state public health officials; 58 of those cases are from Buncombe County.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Vanderburgh County Health Department and the Indiana State Department of Health are investigating a case of Hepatitis A in a food worker at the Lone Star Restaurant located in the Eastland Place Shopping Center in Evansville, IN. Persons who were exposed between April 27, 2012 to May 3, 2012 and unvaccinated can receive a dose of Hepatitis A vaccine. People who ate or drank at the Lone Star from April 20-26, 2012 may also have been exposed, but should not receive the vaccine as it is not effective for exposure past 14 days.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: Small turtles infected with Salmonella Sandiego, Salmonella Pomona and Salmonella Poona are responsible for five separate multistate outbreaks of salmonellosis. A total of 124 people from 27 states have been affected. Nineteen people were hospitalized; two-thirds of the victims are children 10 years of age or younger.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Perestroika Products Ltd. (Burnaby, BC) recalls Real Deal Energy Cookie Oatmeal, Flax & Raisin (650g; Code 01021.12 and 02020.12; UPC 7 75461 76104 2) and POWERflax Energy Cookie High Fiber (650g; Code 32220.11, 32520.11, 01020.12 and 06820.12; UPC 7 76461 76107 3), because the products contain undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed through London Drugs stores in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Public Health Agency of Canada alerts Canadians that several people in the United States and one person in Canada have become ill with a Salmonella infection as a result of contact with pets or pet food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. A manufacturer in the United States, Diamond Pet Foods, has recalled several batches of its dry pet food due to possible contamination with Salmonella, including pet food that was shipped to Canada. The affected pet food was distributed to British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick and may have been distributed to other provinces and territories.   • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Church & Dwight Canada recalls Spinbrush Pro Clean SONIC Recharge Toothbrushes (Lot codes DD9355 to 9365 and DD0002 to 0122; distributed between February 2010 and October 2011) due to the risks, including fire, shock or burns, posed by the charging base overheating.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a confirmed case of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli infection in an 80-year old man who was hospitalized with bloody diarrhea. The patient had no travel history and his home contacts are asymptomatic.
  • Contaminated Water Alert (China): China’s Ministry of Land and Resources reported today that “dirty” underground water continues to be a serious problem for Chinese cities, as a majority of monitored sites reported “bad or extremely bad” water quality in 2011.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Moon Fishery (India) Pty Ltd. recalls Tuna Strips (Product of India; AA or AAA Grade; Imported by Moon Marine USA Corporation), because the product has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was supplied to four wholesalers – one each in Georgia, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. Distribution has been suspended while FDA and the company investigate the scope of the problem.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has closed a Terrebonne Parish molluscan shellfish harvesting area located in Basin 12, Area 23 and also ordered a recall of all oysters harvested from that area since April 26, 2012 including shucked, frozen, breaded, post- harvest processed and oysters for the half shell market. Fourteen people became ill with stomach viruses (norovirus) after eating the Louisiana oysters at a New Orleans area restaurant on April 28 or 29.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Omega Food Importers Co. Ltd. (Mississauga, ON) recalls Imperial Wafer Cocoa Rolls (280g; UPC 64166 01705), Imperial Wafer Coco Rolls (280g; UPC 64166 01710) and Imperial Wafer Chocolate Rolls (140g; UPC 64166 01700) due to the presence of undeclared peanut. The recall products were distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: Tokushin Enterprises Ltd. (Vancouver, BC) recalls S & B brand The Mediterranean Sea Beef Curry Sauce (200g; UPC 4 901002 116330; Lot code up to and including 2012.12.17), because the product contains undeclared fish and milk. The recalled product was distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and may have been distributed nationally.
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: Costco advises its customers of the recall by the US company, Diamond Pet Foods, of the following dry pet food products, due to potential Salmonella contamination: KS Lamb & Rice (18.14KG; item #29504), KS Chicken & Rice (18.14KG Dog Food, item #29506), KS Dry Cat Food (9.07KG, item #190379), KS Natures Domain Salmon & Sweet Potato (item #295700), KS Healthy Weight Dog Food (item #430541), Natures Domain Salmon & Sweet Potato (item #470974), and KS Mature Adult 7-18.14KG Lamb, Rice & Egg (item #779829). Recalled production codes have a  “3” in the 9th position AND an “X” in the 11th position. The best-before dates for all of the recalled products are December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013.
  • Food Safety Alert: Toronto Public Health reminds consumers to thoroughly wash and cook fiddleheads to avoid illness. Five recent cases of illness associated with fiddleheads have been reported recently to the city’s Public Health department.
