E. coli O157:H7 Prompts Canadian Ground Beef Recall

XL Foods, Inc. (Edmonton, AB) has recalled ground beef products sold under the Calahoo Meats, Kirkland Signature, and Safeway brands, in addition to unbranded ground beef products sold in Walmart stores, because the meat may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the recall is “part of an ongoing food safety investigation.” Nevertheless, CFIA reports that no illnesses have been associated with the consumption of the recalled products.

The ground beef products were sold nationwide through distributors, retailers and food service organizations. Following is a list of recalled products, including distribution information:

XL Foods, Inc., dba Lakeside Packers (Est 38) is based in Alberta. Some of the recalled meat was ground in a separate facility – XL Grinding (Est 128) – and supplied to Walmart. A portion of the recalled meat was further processed by Vantage Foods (MB) Inc, Winnipeg, MB (Est 573) and supplied to Safeway.

If you or a family member develops symptoms of acute gastroenteritis (stomach ache, diarrhea, nausea, etc.) within a week after having consumed one of these products, please seek immediate medical attention. Children are especially susceptible to serious secondary illness (hemolytic uremic syndrome) following an infection with E. coli O157:H7.

  • Food Safety Recall: F&S Produce Co. Inc. (Rosenhayn, NJ) recalls certain Delish!, Garden Highway, Garden Pure, Signature Café, Trader Joe’s and Generic Label expired products that contain fresh-cut mangos (code date on or before August 28, 2012), because the products contain Daniella Brand mangos and may be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup.   • Food Safety Recall: Manna Organics, Inc. (Newark, NJ) recalls various soybean sprouts and tofu products, because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were distributed to various restaurants, retailers, and distributors in NY, NJ, PA, MA, VA, MD, CT, GA, IL, and TX on or after July 17, 2012.   • Food Safety Recall: Canada Safeway Ltd. recalls Fruit Tray Bien Fruit Blend (907g; UPC 0 77745 23415 1; All Best Before dates) and Super Fruit Medley Fruit Blend (298g; UPC 0 77745 24023 7; All Best Before dates), because the product, which were manufactured in the USA by Ready Pac, may be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup.   • Allergy Alert: Australian Vintage Limited recalls McGuigan Black Label 20th Anniversary Reserve 2011 Chiraz Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml glass bottle) due to the presence of undeclared sulphur dioxide 220. The recalled product was sold at independent retail liquor stores in NSW, SA, WA, QLD, VIC and the ACT.

  • Food Safety Recall Update: California Department of Public Health releases California retail distribution list for Tanimura & Antle Romaine Lettuce, recalled due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled Romaine Lettuce was sold in Wal-Mart stores throughout California, Safeway stores in Northern California, and Pak ‘N Save stores in Emeryville, Madera, Oakland, San Leandro, and South San Francisco.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action: FDA initiates seizure of various food products in the warehouse owned by San Francisco Herb & Natural Food Company, after agency inspectors find significant insanitary conditions, including live and dead rodents in and around food products and apparent rodent nesting materials in food.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert: FDA warns consumers about the potential health risks of Reumofan Plus and Reumofan Plus Premium, marketed as natural dietary supplements for treating a variety of conditions.   • Food Safety Recall Update: Tanimura & Antle brand Romaine Lettuce (product of USA; UPC 0 27918 20314 9), recalled by the producer after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency found E. coli o157:H7 in a sample, was distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Yukon by The Grocery People Ltd.  and by Martin’s Produce Sales Ltd.

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis at a residential child care centre in Wan Chai district. Four staff members and 17 babies are suffering from vomiting and diarrhea. Two of the babies were admitted to Queen Mary hospital.
