OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Denmark): The Statens Serum Institut is investigating an outbreak of six confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections reported from March 27, 2023, onwards. Five of the six patients have been hospitalized, including one who is suffering from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The cases are spread across most of Denmark. The outbreak strain is reported to be sequence type 11 and is positive for Shiga toxin type Stx2a. The possible source of the outbreak strain is still under investigation.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Norway): The Public Health Institute warns that Norway’s outbreak of shiga toxin-producting E. coli infections is not yet over. The outbreak strain has been detected in 20 people so far, eleven of them under 13 years of age. Seven of the children have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome. The outbreak strain was found in hamburger, which has been recalled together with other minced meat and stuffing products that contain the same raw ingredients.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA has initiated traceback investigations for a new outbreak of Salmonella Newport (8 cases) and Cryptosporidium (11 cases), each linked to a not yet identified product. The eleven Cryptosporidium cases are all reported from Minnesota, and the FDA is assisting the Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Agriculture in their investigation.

Food Safety Recall: Dean & Peeler Meatworks, LLC recalls approximately 1,835 pounds of fresh ground beef products due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: The Ice Cream House recalls all Dairy Ice Cream Products and Non-dairy [Parve] frozen Dessert products due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: TODORGANIC INC recalls Nuez de la India Seeds (12 seeds/2-oz bag) because FDA analysis has determined that the seeds appear to be Thevetia peruviana, or yellow oleander. All parts of the yellow oleander plant are known to contain cardiac glycosides that are highly toxic to humans and animals.

Food Safety Alert: FDA is advising consumers not to eat, and restaurants and food retailers not to sell, and to dispose of cultured mussels from East River Shellfish, Inc. from harvest location PE 4-C, harvested on 8/14/2023, and shipped on 8/15/2023 to retailers in IL, MA, and NY due to the possible presence of Salmonella and E. coli.

FDA Warning Letters—Infant Formula Manufacturers: FDA issues Warning Letters to ByHeart, Inc., Mead Johnson Nutrition (Reckitt), and Perrigo Wisconsin, LLC for violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and the FDA’s Infant Formula regulations. The Warning Letters reflect findings from FDA inspections of these facilities over the last several months.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (Multiple EU countries): Eleven EU countries have reported a total of at least 134 human cases from two outbreak clusters of Salmonella Enteritidis linked to consumption of a number of chicken dishes, including kebab, pizza, burritos and schnitzel. As of August 29, 2023, the number of confirmed cases in Denmark has been increased to twenty-two.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Minnesota): The Minnesota Department of Health is investigating a cluster of five cases of Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses among children in the Minneapolis-St.Paul area. The children range in age from 3 months to 10 years. One has been hospitalized. The families of two of the victims reported that they had consumed raw (unpasteurized) milk. The source of the raw milk has not yet been identified. One of the five children was found to be infected with two different types of pathogenic E. coli in addition to the Salmonella outbreak strain.

Food Safety Alert (Multiple countries): Following a case of haemolytic syndrome (HUS) which occurred in a toddler residing in Trentino, Italy, the local health authorities promptly activated the control procedures to verify the cause of the infection. It is probable that originally it is a correlation with the consumption of foods, in particular cheeses produced in a malga located in the territory of the ex Comune of Coredo. To protect public health, it is considered appropriate that who have purchased, before 14 July, dairy products attributable to the malga located in the territory of the ex Comune of Coredo not to consume such foods. Warnings have been issued to tourists from multiple countries who may have visited the farm-restaurant and purchased one or more of the dairy products.
