Outbreak/Illness Investigations

NEW ZEALAND: New Zealand Food Safety has received reports of Norovirus illnesses that may be linked to consumption of raw oysters from Putaki Bay oyster farm.

USA: FDA has initiated a traceback investigation in response to an outbreak of 25 cases of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses. A food source for the outbreak has not yet been identified.

USA (Update): CDC reports that as of August 27, 2024, 14 more illnesses and six more deaths have been added to the Listeria monocytogenes outbreak linked to consumption of deli meats, including Boar’s Head liverwurst. A total of 57 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria have been reported from 18 states. All 57 have been hospitalized. Nine deaths have been reported.

Food Safety Recall: J F C International Inc recalls J-Basket Brand, Napa Kimchi (14.1 oz; Best before 10/26/24 and 12/19/24; UPC 0 11152 83000 1) due to high levels of yeast.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns J. Moniz Company Inc. that a June 24, 2024 inspection of the company’s importer establishment revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.

Outbreak/Illness Investigations

CANADA (Update): The Public Health Agency of Canada reports 18 confirmed cases of Listeria monocytogenes, 13 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths in an outbreak linked to consumption of plant-based refrigerated beverages. Cases have been reported in Alberta (1), Ontario (12), Québec (4) and Nova Scotia. Two-thirds of the outbreak victims are 50 years of age or older.

IRELAND: Food Safety Authority of Ireland and the National Health Protection Office report an outbreak of five cases of Salmonella within the last 12 months. The outbreak has been linked to consumption of duck eggs.

USA (Update): CDC reports 34 confirmed cases of Listeria monocytogenes, 33 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths in an outbreak linked to consumption of ready-to-eat deli meats, especially liverwurst. The outbreak strain was found in a sample of Boar’s Head Liverwurst. Cases have been reported in 13 states.

Allergy Alert: Van Leeuwen Ice Cream recalls Vegan Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll (14 oz; Lot 24V094; Best by 04/03/2026; UPC 850005872375) due to undeclared peanuts.

Food Safety Recall (Update): Boar’s Head Provisions Co., Inc. recalls approximately 7 million additional pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products after the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes was identified in a sample of Boar’s Head Liverwurst. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: Colonna Brothers recalls Marcum Ground Cinnamon (1.5 oz; Best by 12/05/25 12 D8 and 12/05/25 12 D11) and Supreme Tradition Ground Cinnamon (2.5 oz; Best by 10/06/25 10A11) due to potential lead contamination.

Food Safety Recall: Lower Valley Processing recalls all non-intact, raw products (e.g., ground meat products) produced from animals slaughtered on June 5, 2024 due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination.

United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: CDC and FDA are investigating an outbreak of 12 confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in California and Washington state. Seven of the outbreak victims have been hospitalized, two with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Ten of the 10 people interviewed reported having eaten walnuts; almost all reported buying organic walnuts from bulk bins in food co-ops or natural food stores. FDA traceback identified Gibson Farms, Inc. as the common supplier of nuts in this outbreak. The company has announced a product recall.

Food Safety Alert: New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets warns the public not to consume unpasteurized raw milk from Sunset View Creamery LLC due to possible Campylobacter jejuni contamination. The producer is now prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of this harmful bacteria.

Food Safety Recall: Gibson Farms recalls Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts (25 lbs bulk boxes; Lots 3325-043 & 3341-501; Expiration dates 5/21/25 & 6/7/25) due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination.

Food Safety Recall: Cargill Meat Solutions recalls approximately 16,243 pounds of raw ground beef products due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products, which were shipped to Walmart retail locations nationwide.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA issues Warning Letter to Korean Food, Inc. citing serious violations of the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption (Produce Safety Rule).
