United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE—Elevated lead levels: As of December 5, 2023, FDA has received 64 reports of adverse events potentially linked to recalled Cinnamon Applesauce pouches. To date, confirmed complainants, or people who an adverse event was submitted for, are under 6 years of age. FDA has initiated an onsite inspection at the Austrofoods facility located in Ecuador. Ingredient sample collection is underway. The FDA is continuing to coordinate with Ecuadorian authorities on the investigation of the source of elevated lead levels in cinnamon apple pouches. In addition, the Ecuadorian authorities report that Negasmart’s cinnamon had higher levels of lead than allowed by Ecuador and that Negasmart, the supplier of cinnamon to Austrofoods, is currently under an Ecuadorian administrative sanctions process to determine the responsible party for the contamination.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA is investigating a new outbreak of 3 cases of Listeria monocytogenes infections not yet linked to a specific food.

Allergy Alert: Lara’s Bakery 3 LLC recalls multiple varieties of Pan de Racho, Panque, and Pan Surtido due to undeclared Sesame seed, coconut, soy, wheat, milk, and egg. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: TGD Cuts, LLC recalls specific fresh-cut fruit cup, clamshell and tray products due to potential Salmonella contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: Freshpoint Of Southern CA recalls Imperial Fresh brand whole cantaloupe (3 ct & 6 ct; Code information 10/18/2023 to 11/9/2023) due to possible Salmonella contamination. The fruit was distributed to food service customers in California, Arizona and Nevada.

Food Safety Recall: FreshPoint Dallas recalls Imperial Fresh 1/6 CT MELONS CANTALOUPE  and Imperial Fresh 1/3 CT MELONS CANTALOUPE (Batch/date codes 10-19-23, 10-24-23 and 10-27-23) due to possible Salmonella contamination. The fruit was distributed to Institutions, medical facilities and direct food service accounts in Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (UK): FSA reports more than 200 human cases of salmonellosis caused by specific genetic strains of Salmonella Enteritidis that have been linked to poultry products such as meat and eggs. The agency reminds consumers to take care when handling and cooking poultry products at home, including chilled and frozen chicken and turkey drumsticks, breasts, thighs and chicken pieces. The recent rise in cases has been linked to poultry products imported from Poland.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (Calgary, Alberta): Alberta Health Services is reporting 142 lab-confirmed cases of shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157 infections in an outbreak that is believed to have originated with a kitchen facility that provided meals to eleven daycare centres in the area. Twenty-six people have been hospitalzed, and as many as eleven of them have developed haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: PHAC reports 363 non travel-related cases of Cyclospora illnesses in five provinces as of September 5, 2023. Seven people have been hospitalized due to the severity of their symptoms. No single source of the illnesses has been determined. In past years, Cyclospora illnesses have been linked to various types of imported fresh produce, including pre-packaged salad mix, basil, cilantro, berries, lettuce, and snow and snap peas.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: The FDA and its partner agencies have confirmed that the strain of Listeria monocytogenes responsible for 2 cases of Listeria monocytogenes has also been recovered from a previously unopened sample of Soft Serve On The Go cups produced by Real Kosher Ice Cream of Brooklyn, NY. The contaminated ice cream sample was collected from the home of one of the outbreak patients.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: The CDC reports 18 Salmonella Saintpaul illnesses linked to consumption of ground beef in 4 states, with 7 hospitalizations. No common source of ground beef was identified during traceback investigations. In consequence, there was no recall. This outbreak is now over.

Public Health Alert: The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets warns the public not to consume unpasteurized raw milk from Nathaniel Thompson, doing business as (DBA) Remembrance Farm, due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The producer is now prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of harmful bacteria.

Food Safety Recall: Twin City Foods, Inc. recalls multiple lot codes of Not-Ready-To Eat Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) Super Sweet Cut Corn and Mixed Vegetables in retail bags due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Food/Drugs/Animal Food Safety Recall: Inmar Supply Chain Solutions, LLC recalls FDA regulated products* contained in pallets stored in Inmar’s Arlington, Texas facility between May 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023, the (“FDA Recalled Products”). The FDA Recalled Products, which were sold to salvage buyers, were stored in this facility during a time when there may have been a pest control problem at the facility. In addition, because of recent unusually hot weather, the FDA Recalled Products may have been subjected to temperatures in excess of the storage condition instructions on the product labeling.
