Food Safety Recall: Empacadora Frape, USA LLC recalls approximately 20,455 pounds of frozen, not ready to eat (NRTE) pork chicharron and pork carnitas products that were not presented for import reinspection into the United States. OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (Calgary, Alberta): Alberta Health Services is reporting 142 lab-confirmed cases of shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157 infections in an outbreak that is believed to have originated with a kitchen facility that provided meals to eleven daycare centres in the area. Twenty-six people have been hospitalzed, and as many as eleven of them have developed haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: PHAC reports 363 non travel-related cases of Cyclospora illnesses in five provinces as of September 5, 2023. Seven people have been hospitalized due to the severity of their symptoms. No single source of the illnesses has been determined. In past years, Cyclospora illnesses have been linked to various types of imported fresh produce, including pre-packaged salad mix, basil, cilantro, berries, lettuce, and snow and snap peas.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: CDC and USDA are investigating a four-state outbreak of Salmonella SaintPaul most likely associated with consumption of 80% lean ground beef purchased from ShopRite locations in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. Sixteen people are reported ill, and four of them have been hospitalized.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA is conducting traceback investigations for a new outbreak 13 cases of E. coli O26, and a new outbreak of 39 cases of Cyclospora cayetanensis.

Allergy Alert: Rich Products recalls Member’s Mark Breaded Mozzarella Sticks (5-lb net wt. cardboard box; Best if used by 12/28/2024; UPC 078742226880) due to undeclared egg and soy.

Food Safety Recall: E B Express Provisions recalls approximately 622 pounds of the pork and beef bean stew products that were imported from an establishment in Brazil that is not eligible to export meat products to the United States. OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Denmark): The Statens Serum Institut is investigating a new 14-case outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis. Work is underway to try and identify the source of the outbreak.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATIONS (UK): The UK Health Security Agency is monitoring clusters of gastrointestinal illness in travellers returning from Turkey. In total across the 5 clusters, between 15 January and 19 July 2023 there have been 241 confirmed cases with Salmonella Enteritidis infection, the majority of these with specimen collection dates from April onwards.

OUTBREAK ALERT: An outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes in the state of Washington has sickened five individuals and killed three of them, according to a report by Food Safety News.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: CDC reports that the Hepatitis A outbreak linked to frozen organic strawberries has grown to include ten cases in four states.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: CDC reports that the number of Salmonella cases in an outbreak linked to contact with backyard poultry has increased to 690 cases in 47 states and Puerto Rico. One hundred forty-one (141) of the outbreak victims have been hospitalized. Six different Salmonella serotypes (Braenderup, Enteritidis, Indiana, Infantis, Mbandaka, and Typhimurium) have been recovered from outbreak patients.

Allergy Alert: FSIS issues Public Health Alert for NEVER ANY! UNCURED HAM & CHEESE LUNCH KIT (2.9-oz. plastic tray packages; Use by SEPT 18 2023) due to undeclared peanut. A recall was not requested because the products are believed to no longer be available for purchase.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: The Public Health Agency of Canada reports 185 non-travel related cases of Cyclospora illnesses in Ontario (170), Quebec (9), and British Columbia (6). The PHAC is monitoring the situation, but has not identified a source.

Public Health Alert: The Québec Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) advises the public not to consume various seafood products packed in glass jars that were prepared and sold by Fruits de mer Fougère (Îles-de-la-Madeleine, QC), due to potential for growth of Clostridium botulinum. Please refer to the MAPAQ public health alert for a complete list of affected products.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Sweden): Sweden’s Public Health Agency, together with the Swedish Food Agency and regional partners are investigating an outbreak of 14 reported cases of Listeria monocytogenes infections. Four of the cases were reported in the fall of 2022, and the other ten cases developed between the end of May and 2023 and early July 2023. Three victims have died. Several of the victims reported having consumed cold-smoked and/or smoked salmon in the period before falling ill. However, a specific source of the outbreak has not yet been determined.
