United States

PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT: The FDA is advising parents and caregivers not to buy or feed WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches (All batch codes and expiration dates) to children because the product may contain elevated levels of lead. The company has agreed to voluntarily recall all WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches regardless of expiration.

Food Safety Recall: Olymel recalls EXTRA LEAN Celebrity 96% FAT FREE IMPORTED HAM WATER ADDED (12-lb vacuum packs; Lots 23208, 23212, and 23221; Product of Canada) because the product was not presented for import reinspection into the United States.

Pet Food Safety Recall: Blue Ridge Beef recalls Breeders Choice 2# log raw dog food (2-lb chubs; Lot 8/2/24; UPC 8 54298 00193 1) due to Salmonella contamination. The recall was initiated after the company received notification from the FDA that Salmonella was recovered from the product.

Allergy Alert (Iceland): ÓJ-K-ÍSAM recalls ORA brand Fiskbollur í tómatsósu / Fish balls in tomato sauce (850g; Lot L97651; Best before 28.06.26) due to incorrect allergen declaration.

Allergy Alert (Iceland): Myllan recalls Smákökudeig Evu Laufeyjar með súkkulaðibitu / Eva Laufejar cookie dough with chocolate chips (500g; Best before 7.12.2023) due to undeclared pecans.

Allergy Alert (UK): Morrisons recalls Morrisons Market Street 18 Caramel Crispy Bites (pack of 18; All best before dates up to and including 12 December 2023) due to undeclared egg.

Allergy Alert (UK): Asda recalls The Bakery at Asda 20 Chocolate Caramel Mini Crisp Bites (200g; All best before dates up to and including 14 December 2023) due to undeclared egg.

Blue Ridge Beef raw dog food recalled due to Salmonella

Blue Ridge Beef has recalled a single production batch of Breeders Choice raw dog food after being informed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that Salmonella was found in a sample of the product.

The voluntary recall is limited to the following:

Breeders Choice dog food, 2-lb log: Lot #8/2/24, UPC 8 54298 00193 1

The recalled product was distributed between 8/9/2023 and 8/25/2023, and was sold primarily in retail stores located in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The company’s North Carolina manufacturing facility has been inspected on at least three separate occasions during the past several years.

Upon completion of a 2016 inspection, the company’s operations were classified as “Voluntary Action Indicated.”

A follow-up inspection conducted in 2019 revealed multiple, serious infractions, and was classified “Official Action Indicated.” A Warning Letter, issued in June 2020, described those conditions in detail, including:

Utilizing tissues from animals that died other than by slaughter (i.e., 4D animals) without first determining whether the animals suffered any type of illness, injury, and/or whether any medications may have been administered to the animals;
Badly pitted concrete floors in the kill room, the cooler, and the mixing/packaging room, creating a niche for microorganisms to survive;
Thawing beef parts coming into contact with the concrete floors;
On the kill floor, while employees removed hides from three cow carcasses, stomach contents and fecal matter were observed spilling over onto exposed carcasses;
Carcasses dragged on the floors;
Deteriorating, exposed insulation;
Finished product and raw ingredient samples found to be contaminated with generic E. coli, Salmonella (two different serotypes) and Listeria monocytogenes; and
Operating without a current Food Facility Registration.

A third inspection, conducted in 2021, revealed that many of these problems had not been corrected. That inspection also was classified as “Official Action Indicated,” although a second Warning Letter does not appear to have been issued.

The 2021 inspection is the most recent one posted on the FDA Inspection Citation database.

What consumers should know

Dogs can become infected with Salmonella after eating a contaminated product.

Infected dogs may show symptoms that include lethargy, decreased appetite, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some infected dogs may not show any symptoms at all, but may shed the bacteria in their stools nevertheless, potentially infecting other animals or humans.

People who become infected with Samonella may suffer from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, a Salmonella infection can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

Pet owners or other individuals who may have come into contact with the recalled product should monitor themselves and their animals for symptoms of Salmonella infection, and should consult their veterinarian or healthcare professional (as appropriate) if any of these symptoms appear.

Allergy Alert: KIND Healthy Snacks recalls Oats & Honey Granola with Toasted Coconut (11-oz and 17-oz pouches; Best before April 4, 2021 to June 1, 2021 (11-oz) and April 30, 2021 to June 1, 2021) due to undeclared sesame seeds.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA issues Warning Letter to pet food manufacturer Lea-Way Farms Inc. dba Blue Ridge Beef, listing insanitary conditions, presence of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes in a finished product sample, and inadequate or non-existent examination of raw materials to ensure they were suitable for manufacturing and processing into animal food.

Allergy Alert Update: Daiya Foods Inc. recalls Daiya brand Classic Vanilla Creme Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert (473 mL; Lot code 600820; Best before 08 JA 2021; UPC 8 71459 00984 1) due to undeclared milk. The previous recall notice has been updated to reflect additional product distribution information.

Food Safety Recall: Poissonnerie Sherbrooke recalls various smoked fish products because the conditions of manufacture and packaging may represent a food safety hazard.

Europe

Allergy Alert (UK): Waitrose & Partners recalls Waitrose & Partners Slow Cooked Beef and Ale Pie (400g; Lot #L0125; Best before end November 2021) due to undeclared milk and hazelnuts.

Food Safety Recall (Belgium): VDS Food recalls various raw ground meat products (Best before 06/07/2020, 07/07/2020, 08/07/2020 or 10/07/2020) due to Salmonella contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall (UK): Cliftons Farms recalls Cliftons Farm raw milk (2 pt; any products purchased on or after 20th June 2020) and Cliftons Farm raw cream (230 ml; any products purchased on or after 20th June 2020) due to Campylobacter contamination.

Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Soyummy Ltd recalls Soyummy brand Dr. Fermented Bean Paste (220g tub; Best before 30/09/20 and 13/12/20) due to elevated levels of Bacillus cereus.
