The Public Health Agency of Canada has linked consumption of Daniella brand Mangos from Mexico to an outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup infections. State and federal agencies in the USA – led by the California Department of Public Health – are investigating illnesses in several US states due to the same outbreak strain.
The Outbreak Summary (As of September 14, 2012)
- Canada:- As of August 29, 2012 there have been 21 confirmed cases in British Columbia (16) and Alberta (5). No other details have been released. This tally is one less than previously reported. The initial Notice reported 17 cases in British Columbia.
- USA:- 121 cases in 15 states. 25 people hospitalized. Affected states reporting illnesses due to the outbreak strain include California (93), Delaware (1), Hawaii (4), Idaho (1), Illinois (2), Maine (1), Michigan (1), Montana (1), Nebraska (1), New Jersey (1), New York (3), Oregon (1), Texas (2), Washington (8), and Wisconsin (1). Approximately two-thirds of the California victims reported mango consumption. Six of the 8 Washington case-patients became ill in July; five of the Washington cases were from King County (where Seattle is located). Neither of the Texas case-patients reported eating mango. Hawaii’s three victims are linked molecularly to the outbreak strain; however there is no clear epidemiological link. Two of the three Hawaii cases definitely did not consume mango.

CDC Advice to Consumers, Retailers and Others (As of August 30, 2012)
Contaminated mangoes may make people sick.
- CDC recommends that consumers do not eat recalled Daniella brand mangoes distributed by Splendid Products and discard any remaining recalled mangoes. This is especially important for children under the age of 5 years, elderly adults, and people with weak immune systems.
- Persons who think they might have become ill from eating possibly contaminated mangoes should consult their health care providers.
Contaminated mangoes may still be in grocery stores and in consumers’ homes.
- Consumers who recently purchased recalled Daniella brand mangoes distributed by Splendid Products are advised not to eat them and discard any remaining recalled mangoes.
- Even if some of the mango has been eaten without anyone becoming ill, the rest of the mango should be disposed of immediately.
- When in doubt, throw it out.
- Recalled mangoes should be disposed of in a closed plastic bag placed in a sealed trash can. This will prevent people or animals from eating them.
- Retailers and food service operators should not sell or serve recalled Daniella brand mangoes.

So are mangoes with the same PLU (Product Look-Up) #, and a different brand name on their sticker, OK even if bought in the time period involving the Daniella ones?
LikeLike
As far as I know, the Daniella brand is the only brand that is affected. My assumption is that the brand is related to the farm where they are grown. The PLU # is a code that stores use for their pricing software, I believe.

My daughter received a call from Costco last night telling her that these mangos were purchased on our account (I bought them), unfortunately mangos don’t last long in my house so they are all gone already. Can only hope these weren’t infected I guess. Is there another way to find out if they were?

Today I bought 5 Danella mangoes from TOPS (Friendly Market) in Amherst, NY. The Lot #4584 is the same as that mentioned for Top Food & Drug (unrelated to TOPS?) in Washington/Oregon and Charlie’s Produce, so those on the East Coast should be careful, too.

I just received a message from Costco that I purchased the bad mangoes. I made a fruit smoothie 7 days ago with one and had violent, projectile vomiting within 3 hours of injesting it. I still have 3 in my vegetable bin. Should I return them to Costco or contact someone at the Health Dept.?

Margaret, what state are you in? Did Costco reach you by phone or by email? If by email, would you please share the content of the message for other eFoodAlert readers?

Costco left a message on my phone late last night saying that they have a record of my Mango purchase between the dates on July 24th and Aug 28…to return them for a refund etc., etc. I am in CT and bought these the last day of July here in Enfield, CT. I have 3 left…took them out of the bin and am bleaching my fridge. I WASH all fruit very carefuly before cutting…How did this happen? I am also very good at cutting out flesh without breaking the skin?

Margaret, I agree with the comments from food dude. Salmonella is an infection and takes some time to “set up”; rapid-onset vomiting (up to 6 hours) is more typical of Bacillus cereus or Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning. It could have been another ingredient in your smoothie that caused the vomiting. Nevertheless, you should get rid of the recalled mangos.

Salmonella will usually take longer than 3 hours to onset, and then the primary symptom will be diarrhea. But if the mangos have been recalled, I would get rid of them

Thank you Food Dude and foodbuglady….I also added parsley, romaine and sprouts….have been sick before when adding sprouts…I am impecable with my washing….use a couple drops of peroxide in water when not organic.

Sprouts are extremely susceptible to contamination and also nearly impossible to disinfect effectively. I stopped eating raw sprouts years ago.

Organic produce is just as likely to be contaminated with pathogens as produce that is conventionally grown. Organic is NOT safer. Thoroughly wash ALL of your produce.
