Salmonella Braenderup – Mango

The Public Health Agency of Canada has linked consumption of Daniella brand Mangos from Mexico to an outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup infections. State and federal agencies in the USA – led by the California Department of Public Health – are investigating illnesses in several US states due to the same outbreak strain.

The Outbreak Summary (As of September 14, 2012)

• Canada:- As of August 29, 2012 there have been 21 confirmed cases in British Columbia (16) and Alberta (5). No other details have been released. This tally is one less than previously reported. The initial Notice reported 17 cases in British Columbia.
• USA:- 121 cases in 15 states. 25 people hospitalized. Affected states reporting illnesses due to the outbreak strain include California (93), Delaware (1), Hawaii (4), Idaho (1), Illinois (2), Maine (1), Michigan (1), Montana (1), Nebraska (1), New Jersey (1), New York (3), Oregon (1), Texas (2), Washington (8), and Wisconsin (1). Approximately two-thirds of the California victims reported mango consumption. Six of the 8 Washington case-patients became ill in July; five of the Washington cases were from King County (where Seattle is located). Neither of the Texas case-patients reported eating mango. Hawaii’s three victims are linked molecularly to the outbreak strain; however there is no clear epidemiological link. Two of the three Hawaii cases definitely did not consume mango.

• Canada Safeway Ltd. Fruit Tray Bien Fruit Blend (907g; Product of Ready Pac) and Super Fruit Medley Fruit Blend (298g; Product of Ready Pac), sold in Safeway in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and possibly in other provinces/territories.
• Fresh Start Foods Recalled GFS Sliced Mangos (6 lb; No date or lot code; No UPC), distributed to the hotel/restaurant/institutional market in Alberta and Manitoba.
• Krown Produce Inc. Recalled Daniella brand mangos (PLU #4051 and #4584) that were packaged and shipped to two Costco warehouses in Winnipeg on August 26, 2012
• Mex Y Can Trading, Inc. (Mississauga, ON):- The Canadian importer has recalled Daniella brand mangos, sold as a multi-pack or as individual fruit with a sticker bearing PLU #3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959. The mangos were sold at retail stores from July 12 up to and including August 29, 2012. They may have been distributed nationally.
• M.L. Catania Company Limited (Toronto, ON) Daniella brand mangos, Product of Mexico, bearing PLU #4051 and 4959; shipped to Costco between July 20th and August 28th.
• M.L. Catania Co. Ltd. (Toronto, ON) Daniella brand Mango packed by M.L. Catania Co. Ltd in 6-pack plastic clamshell bearing UPC 0 69168 61603 0 and Pack dates from 12 JL 19 to 12 AU 21, distributed to Newfoundland and Ontario and possibly to other provinces.
• North American Produce Sales (Vancouver, BC):- The Canadian importer has recalled Daniella brand Mangos, sold as individual fruit with a sticker bearing PLU #4959. The fruit was imported from Mexico and sold at various retail stores between July 12 and August 31, 2012.
• Northern Light Produce Network Ltd. (Edmonton, AB):- Daniella brand mangoes with PLU numbers 3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959; distributed in Alberta.

CDC Advice to Consumers, Retailers and Others (As of August 30, 2012)

Contaminated mangoes may make people sick.

• CDC recommends that consumers do not eat recalled Daniella brand mangoes distributed by Splendid Products and discard any remaining recalled mangoes. This is especially important for children under the age of 5 years, elderly adults, and people with weak immune systems.
• Persons who think they might have become ill from eating possibly contaminated mangoes should consult their health care providers.

Contaminated mangoes may still be in grocery stores and in consumers’ homes.

• Consumers who recently purchased recalled Daniella brand mangoes distributed by Splendid Products are advised not to eat them and discard any remaining recalled mangoes.
• Even if some of the mango has been eaten without anyone becoming ill, the rest of the mango should be disposed of immediately.
• When in doubt, throw it out.
• Recalled mangoes should be disposed of in a closed plastic bag placed in a sealed trash can. This will prevent people or animals from eating them.
• Retailers and food service operators should not sell or serve recalled Daniella brand mangoes.
