SPAIN: Food Safety News reports that at least 162 people have been infected by Salmonella after eating food at Trasan Fest festival held on June 27 and 28 in Oza Cesuras (A Coruña). Of these, 22 have required hospitalization.

Public Health Alert:  Food Safety and Inspection Service issues public health alert for ready-to-eat (RTE) beef jerky stick products due to potential foreign matter contamination (plastic). The implicated products are no longer available for sale.

Allergy Alert: Mellace Family Brands California, Inc. recalls Wegmans Semi – Sweet Chocolate Nonpareils (18.5oz (1LB 2.5OZ) 524g; Multiple lot codes and Best by dates; UPC 0 77890 49787 6) due to undeclared milk.

Outbreak/Illness Investigations

MULTI-COUNTRY OUTBREAK: Beacon reports that a Salmonella Infantis outbreak linked to a ready-to-eat cashew mousse has sickened 98 children in Germany and Austria, with additional cases in Luxembourg and possibly the Czech Republic

FRANCE (Update): ARS Haut-de-France reports that the number of cases of bloody diarrhea reported in Saint-Quentin has risen to 29. One victim has died and seven remain hospitalized.

USA (Update): FDA has completed its investigation into a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to consumption of cucumbers from Bedner Growers Inc. According to the CDC, 69 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella were reported from 21 states, and 22 were hospitalized. CDC has declared the outbreak over.

Allergy Alert: Gaiser’s European Style Provisions Inc. recalls approximately 143,416 pounds of ready-to-eat bologna that contain meat or poultry source materials that are not declared on the product labels.

UK: The Food Standards Agency advises that Orgenism Eggshell Membrane Capsules have been associated with human illness due to Salmonella.

USA: CDC reports that the Salmonella outbreak linked to contact with backyard poultry has grown to 187 cases in 42 states. One person has died and 42 have been hospitalized. Twenty-eight percent (28%) of the outbreak victims are under 5 years of age.
