United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: FDA and CDC continue their investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Duisberg and Salmonella Urbana infections linked to the consumption of Jule’s Cashew Brie, a vegan, or plant-based cheese alternative. CDC has confirmed reports of seven outbreak-related illnesses in three states, with three hospitalizations.

Allergy Alert: Natural Way recalls Natural Way brand Original Almond Butter (16 oz; Lot #505721; UPC 850001775175) due to undeclared peanuts.

Allergy Alert: Arizona Nutritional Supplements recalls 365 Everyday Value Whey Protein Powder Natural Vanilla Flavor (13.9 oz; Lot #0073984; Best by 03/04/2023) due to undeclared soy.

Food Safety Recall Update: Guan’s Mushroom Co recalls Enoki Mushroom (All cases of its 100g/3.5- ounce & 200g/7-ounce packages; Product of China) due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Canada

Food Safety Recall: The Big Carrot recalls certain The Big Carrot brand juice products due to foreign matter (pieces of glass) contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: Goldenway International Trade Co., Ltd. recalls Golden Mushroom brand Enoki Mushroom (200g; All units sold up to and including May 7, 2021; Product of China; UPC 8 809201 000039) due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Food Safety Recall: Goût de qualité recalls certain varieties of stew (420g; All units sold up to 6 May, 2021) due to manufacturing and packaging conditions that may render the products unsafe to consume.

Europe

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (LITHUANIA): The State Food and Veterinary Service is investigating twelve cases of suspected foodborne illness among children at the Kėdainiai Aušra Progymnasium of the Lithuanian Sports University.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (SWEDEN): Sweden reports fourteen cases of Salmonella Braenderup infections in ten different regions of the country. The source of the outbreak has not yet been identified.

Allergy Alert (Belgium): Jumbo recalls Jumbo brand Soupe de tomates fraiches / Fresh tomato soup (500g; Use by 11-05-2021) and Jumbo brand Soupe de champignons frais / Fresh mushroom soup (500g; Use by 16-05-2021) due to undeclared celery and milk, respectively.

Allergy Alert (France): LES DELICES DU VALPLESSIS INTERMARCHE recalls Amelie brand Colosse chocolat amandes / Milk chocolate-enrobed ice cream on a stick (346g 4-pack; Lot #111 21; Best before 18/10/2023) due to undeclared peanuts.

Food Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Le Quinze Vins Limited recalls Janier brand Picodon Aop raw milk goat cheese (Batch codes 12260610, 13260610, 14260610, 15260610, 16260610; Product of France) due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Food Safety Recall (Israel): Hermes Fish Factory Ltd. recalls various smoked salmon products due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Zuke’s withdraws dog treats from stores. FDA not informed

3rd Birthday #1 Aug 2005 Zuke’s Mini Naturals dog treats have been withdrawn by the company.

The withdrawal follows a series of complaints posted on the websites of on-line retailers Amazon.com and Chewy.com over the last five months describing mold growth in unopened bags of the pet treats.

Some of the complaints described episodes of diarrhea and vomiting in dogs who were fed the treats.

According to the pet food retail chain, Pet Supplies Plus, the following products have been withdrawn:

The pet treats are sold nationwide through physical and online retailers.

Zuke’s, which is a subsidiary of Nestlé Purina PetCare, posted this notice on the “Contact Us” page of its website:

As you might have heard from your pet store, we are voluntarily removing Zuke’s Mini Naturals (all recipes) from sale due to a quality issue. While not a food safety issue, we took this proactive step with our retail customers and distributors to ensure our pet parents continue to have the best experience with our Zuke’s Mini Naturals products. If you aren’t completely satisfied with your recent Zuke’s Mini Naturals purchase, we are always happy to issue you a refund. To reach a member of our Pet Parent Relations team, please submit the form below or give us a call at 1-866-985-3364.

Zuke’s did not advise the FDA about this product withdrawal, nor was it obliged to do so, according to an agency spokesperson.

The FDA has received “a couple of complaints from pet owners involving moldy products and gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and diarrhea, and is in the process of investigating those complaints.” The agency also has reached out to the manufacturer to learn more about the situation, including whether Zuke’s has received any complaints.

What consumers should do

Do not feed the withdrawn treats to your pet. Either discard them or return them to the retailer for a refund.
If your pet becomes ill after eating one of the withdrawn treats, consult your veterinarian.
Report any pet illness relating to consumption of a commercial pet food or pet treat to the FDA either through the agency’s online portal or by telephone.

Food Safety Alert (New York State): The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets warns consumers that Robinson Fresh brand packaged Turnip Greens (16-oz bag; Best by 4/26/21) may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Consumers are advised to either discard the product or return it to the place of purchase.

Food Safety Alert (New York State): The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets warns consumers that raw milk from Breese Hollow Dairy may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The producer is now prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of harmful bacteria. Consumers are advised to discard the product.

Pet Treat Withdrawal: Zuke’s, a subsidiary of Nestlé Purina PetCare, has withdrawn Zuke’s Mini Naturals training treats (all sizes and flavours) from store shelves due to mold contamination issues. The company has not announced a formal product recall and has not indicated whether or not its actions were taken in cooperation with FDA.
