Outbreak/Illness Investigations

CANADA (Update): The Public Health Agency of Canada reports 117 lab-confirmed Salmonella illnesses linked to consumption of pistachios and pistachio products. Seventeen people have been hospitalized. Multiple serotypes have been included in the outbreak definition, including Salmonella Havana, Salmonella Mbandaka, Salmonella Meleagridis, Salmonella Tennessee, Salmonella Anatum, Salmonella Bareilly, Salmonella Senftenberg and Salmonella Ohio. Outbreak cases are reported in British Columbia (9), Alberta (4), Manitoba (2), Ontario (34), Quebec (67), and New Brunswick (1).

RUSSIA: Between 18 and 19 Oct 2025, a large foodborne illness outbreak happened in Ulan-Ude, Republic of Buryatia, Russia. Forty-nine people have been affected, including children aged 7–15 years; 40 patients are hospitalized, and one remains in intensive care in stable but serious condition. Eleven of the cases have been lab-confirmed as Salmonella. The source was traced to ready-to-eat foods, such as shawarma and onigiri, produced and distributed through a retail chain.

Allergy Alert (Correction): Jody’s Inc. recalls Cabot Creamery Sea Salt Caramel Cheddar Popcorn (6 oz (170g); Lot 2519907B1; Best if enjoyed by 07 15 26; UPC 8 50016 94430 6) due to undeclared peanuts.

Food Safety Recall (Correction): M.C.I. Foods Inc. recalls approximately 91,585 pounds of specific lots of ready-to-eat (RTE) breakfast burrito and wrap products due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Details of this recall were corrected on October 20, 2025. The products subject to this recall were not part of food provided by the USDA for the National School Lunch Program. Some products may have been distributed to schools through commercial sales.

Allergy Alert: Coopérative de solidarité de Bouchette (Bouchette, QC) recalls multiple products due to undeclared wheat, soy, sulphites, egg, and/or mustard.

Food Safety Recall: Premier Nuts Enterprise Ltd., Aria Market and Lena Market, Dizin Inc., Persia Food Products Inc., Pure Acumen dba Vicinity Market, Shiraz Farm Market recall certain pistachios due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Food Safety Recall: Premier Nuts Enterprises Ltd. recalls Premier Nuts brand Pistachios In-Shell due to Salmonella contamination.
