United States

  • Allergy Alert: Mattern Sausage (Orange, CA) recalls Mattern Sausage Tongue and Blood Sausage (4-lb to 8-lb chugs; Produced September 6, 2011), due to the presence of undeclared hydrolyzed soy protein. The recalled sausage products were shipped to sandwich shops near Orange, CA.
  • Allergy Alert: Prolab Nutrition Inc. (Chatsworth, CA) recalls certain protein items, because they contain undeclared wheat and gluten. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.
  • Food Safety Recall: Pepperidge Farm, Incorporated (Norwalk, CT) recalls Baked Naturals Sesame Sticks (10.2-oz boxes; WO7*1781 Sell by 11/20/2011, WO7*1891 Sell by 11/27/2011, WO7*1921 Sell by 12/4/2011, WO7*2041 Sell by 12/11/2011, WO7*2061 Sell by 12/13/2011, and WO7*2221 Sell by 1/1/2012), because the products may contain small, thin pieces of wire.
  • Food Safety Recall: World Wide Fish Products, Inc. (Bronx, NY) recalls Smoked Split Herring, because the product was found to be uneviscerated and represents a risk for Clostridium botulinum. The product was distributed in New York City on 08/17/2011 to Food Plaza Supermarket, NSA Supermarket (Bravo), Brooklyn # 1 Meat Market, P&P Distributors, and Flaming Meat Distributors.
  • Food Safety Recall: Palo Duro Meat (Amarillo, TX) recalls fine ground beef (40-lb boxes containing four 10-lb chubs; Production code 19110; Est. 7282), because the ground beef may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The frozen product was produced on Sept. 9, 2011, and shipped to two warehouses in Georgia for further distribution to institutions. The institutions include six school districts in Georgia associated with the National School Lunch Program.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Distributors, retailers, restaurants, and consumers have been advised not to eat, sell, or ship oysters harvested between August 30 and September 19 from Washington’s Hood Canal growing area #4. The state Department of Health made the recommendations, including contacting people who bought the oysters over the Internet, as part of a recall of oysters in the shell harvested in that growing area between those dates. Oyster harvesting in the area was closed after five people who ate raw oysters containing Vibrio parahaemolyticus became ill.
  • Outbreak Alert: More than 40 people have become ill with gastrointestinal symptoms after eating food purchased at the Grace Covenant Church fundraiser in York, South Carolina on September 16th and 17th. The state Department of Health and Environmental Control is advising people who purchased food at the fundraiser to throw it away.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Solo Fruit Inc. recalls Solo Fruit brand Dark Chocolate Sorbet (500ml packages; Lot codes 1111116 or 1111165), because the product may contain undeclared milk. The recalled sorbet was distributed only in Quebec.
  • Food Safety Recall: Phoenicia Products Inc. recalls Alkanater brand Tahini (908g containers; Prod. 5/1/2011; Exp. 5/1/2013), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled tahini was distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Au Gout d’autrefois (Sainte-Famille, QC) recalls certain products sold in 500ml and 250ml glass jars, because the products were not produced in a way that ensures their microbiological safety. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department ordered the temporary closure of a cooked food market stall in Yuen Long for thorough disinfection after Vibrio cholerae was detected in a water sample collected from its fish tank.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (Australia): South Australia Health has received reports of an additional four cases of shiga-toxin producing E. coli infections, all among people who reported visiting the Royal Adelaide Show, bringing the total number of infections to seven. Two of the seven patients have developed HUS. While most of the infections are among children, one of the HUS victims is a 27-year old man, who is receiving treatment in hospital and is reported to be in serious but stable condition.

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Insight Pharmaceuticals recalls Nostrilla 12-Hour Nasal Decongestant (Batch/Lot 11G075), due to the potential presence of a microbial contaminant that exceeds product specifications and may result in infection in individuals with a compromised immune system or those with chronic lung conditions.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The Cherry Company, Ltd (Honolulu, HI) that a July 2011 inspection revealed a serious violation of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Paramount Muffins, LLC (Newark, NJ) that a May/June 2011 inspection of the company’s manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Postres de Aqui, Inc. (San Juan, PR) that a March/April 2011 inspection of the company’s food product manufacturing facility revealed that the firm’s products are not labeled in accordance with the Food Labelling regulation.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Metro Ontario Inc. (Etobicoke, ON) recalls unwrapped, unlabeled cantaloupes sold from Food Basics, 2452 Sheppard Ave. E., North York, Ontario on September 12, 2011, because the cantaloupes may be contaminated with Salmonella.

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd. recalls Sainsbury’s Freefrom Pure Oats, 450g (Best before July, August, and September 2012), after testing finds low levels of undeclared wheat gluten in some packets.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Delhaize Belgique recalls Delhaize brand Frozen Cocktail Shrimp (500g; 51/60 size; Product of China; Lot #1072365; Best before 23/05/2013), due to the presence of antibiotic residues in excess of permitted limits.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark); Jensen & Köppen ApS recalls United Parsley (120g; Lot 1209; Product of Italy), due to Salmonella contamination.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1271): Salmonella in paan leaves (betel) from India; distributed to the United Kingdom.

  • Food Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Food Safety ordered the temporary closure of the fish portion of PARKnSHOP Superstore (Tsuen Wan, New Territories), after Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor serotype Ogawa was found in a water sample taken from a fish tank inside the shop.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a suspected food poisoning outbreak involving 29 students and staff from a primary school in Sham Shui Po.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): Analysis carried out by the Therapeutic Goods Administration has confirmed the presence of sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) in Black Ant Capsules. This product has not been approved for sale in Australia, but can be purchased over the Internet.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): Analysis carried out by the Therapeutic Goods Administration has confirmed the presence of sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) in Qing Tian Zhu tablets. This product has not been approved for sale in Australia, but can be purchased over the Internet.

United States

  • Allergy Alert: BUI Natural Tofu (Portland, OR) recalls BUI Shrimp Salad Roll (Expiration dates from 9/2 through 9/13) and BUI Vegetarian Salad Roll (Expiration dates from 9/2 through 9/13), because the products contain undeclared soy and wheat. The recalled Salad Rolls were distributed to retail stores in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area.
  • Food Safety Recall: Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation (Springdale, AR) recalls 185,000 pounds of ground turkey products (Est. #P-963; Produced on August 23, 24, 30 and 31, 2011), because the turkey meat may be contaminated with an antibiotic-resistant strain of Salmonella Heidelberg that was responsible for an outbreak of salmonellosis earlier this year.
  • Food Safety Alert: FDA warns consumers not to eat tapenade or spreadable dried tomato paste manufactured by the French company La Ruche and sold under the brand names Les délices de Marie-Claire, Terre de Mistral, and Les secrets d’Anaïs, because these products may contain botulinum toxin. Eight cases of botulism have been confirmed in France to be linked to the consumption of one of these products, and lab analyses have confirmed the presence of Clostridium botulinum and/or its toxin in several samples. French authorities have ordered the company to cease production and recall all outstanding products. While FDA has no indication that La Ruche products were imported into the USA, returning tourists may have purchased them in France as souvenirs or gifts.
  • Outbreak Alert: A multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections – including one death – in Colorado (9 cases), Texas (2 cases) and Nebraska (1 case) has been linked – based on preliminary results – to the consumption of cantaloupe. All nine of the Colorado victims report having eaten cantaloupe. The source of the cantaloupe has not yet been identified. Confirmed Colorado cases are in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Denver, Douglas, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld counties. The victims range in age from the 30s to the 90s. The average age is 84. The majority are female.
  • Outbreak Alert (California): Monterey County health officials advise the public not to consume raw or undercooked oysters, after receiving several reports of Vibrio parahaemolyticus illnesses in individuals who consumed raw oysters served or purchased in Monterey County.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Tulipa Crossanteria & Salao de Cha recalls its Strawberry Pie (700g), Apple Pie (700g), Lemon Pie (700g), Rosquilhas Portuguese Biscuits (224g) and Macaroon Coconut (400g), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The Macaroon Coconut also contains undeclared sulphites. The recalled products were sold in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Johnvince Foods (Downsview, ON) expands its earlier recall and alert to include additional walnut products that were repackaged by retailers using bulk walnuts imported from the USA by Johnvince in 25-lb cardboard cases bearing Lot code W1866 and the name Anderson and Sons Shelling, Vina, California. These raw walnut products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Please navigate to the CFIA notice for a list of the additional recalled products, all of which were sold in Ontario.
