  • Allergy Alert: Mt. Airy Meat Center (Mt. Airy, NC) recalls Mt. Airy Meat Center Mesquite Chicken Breast Raw Ready to Cook (approx. 1.5-lb vacuum-sealed pkgs; Est. P017690), due to misbranding and the presence of undeclared wheat. the recalled product was sold to consumers at the company’s retail store.
  • Allergy Alert: Zenner’s Quality Meat Products, Inc. (Portland, OR) recalls Zenner’s Smoked Brotwurst (2.25-lb pkgs; Sell by date through 7/17/12; Est 6308), due to misbranding and the presence of undeclared soy protein. the recalled products were manufactured through May 16, 2012 and distributed to wholesale establishments in California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.
  • Food Safety Recall: L.A. Link (Huntington Beach) Corporation (Cerritos, CA) recalls Shiitake-Ya brand Gourmet Shiitake Slices (6-oz plastic jars; Sell by 04/16/2013), due to possible chemical contamination. The recalled product was sold in Costco Wholesale locations in Washington, Oregon and California.
  • Food Safety Recall: Taste of Roux, LLC (Valley Village, CA) recalls Taste of Roux brand vegetarian soups (pt-size and qt-size glass jars with metal lids; includes Tortilla, Lentil, Black Bean, Tomato, Carrot Ginger, Vegetarian Chili and Detox vegetarian soups), due to possible Clostridium botulinum contamination. The recalled soups were sold at the Malibu Farmers Market (Malibu, CA) on Sundays beginning on November 20, 2011 and at the Autry Farmers Market (Los Angeles, CA) on Saturdays beginning on May 5, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Kroger Company recalls numerous wraps, sandwiches, subs and salads, because the ready-to-eat products were made using lettuce that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Only products sold at Fred Meyer stores are affected.
  • Compounded Prescription Recall: Franck’s Pharmacy recalls all sterile Human and Veterinary Prescriptions distributed from November 21, 2011 to May 21, 2012, after FDA discovers the presence of microorganisms and fungal growth in environmental samples from the company’s clean room.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Shah Trading Co. recalls Vitrac Pure Mild Honey – Clover Flower (340g and 880g sizes; Product codes PRO 12 2011 EXP 11 2013 0111346 and PRO 12 2011 EXP 11 2013 0111345, respectively) due to the presence of drug residues in the product. The recalled product was distributed in the Province of Quebec.
  • Food Recall: Uncle T Food Ltd. recalls Hualien Japonica Premium Short Grain Rice (15 lb; All codes; UPC 4 712162 000083), due to insect contamination. The recalled product was sold in Alberta and British Columbia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Various supermarket and grocery chains recall Gills Onions brand Fresh Diced Red Onions (Product of USA, 198g packages; Best before 05/17/12; Lot code 51RDA1A2119), due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The product was sold in stores belonging to the following chains:  Overwaitea Food Group LP (Alberta and British Columbia), The Produce People Inc. (Alberta), Canada Safeway Ltd. (National distribution), and Loblaw Companies Ltd. (Ontario).

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Finland): Dynameat Ltd. recalls Full Meat Sausage (400g pkg; Best before dates 01/06/2012 and 06/06/2012), due to the presence of undeclared soy protein.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Danton Trading A/S recalls Antos Greek Yoghurt with 2% Honey (Lot L12312; Best before 02-07-2012), due to leaky packaging.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Coop Denmark recalls Fresh packaged ginger (Product of China; 200g; Lot 20A), due to the presence of pesticide residues above the permitted limit.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0694): Unauthorized dinotefuran in chilled kale from Thailand; distributed to Switzerland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0695): Acetamiprid and fipronil in chinese broccoli from China; distributed to the Netherlands.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0696): Salmonella Cerro and Salmonella Senftenberg in soybean meal from Brazil; distributed to Hungary and Slovenia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0697): Nematode infestation of chilled monkfish from France; distributed to Italy.

  • Food Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Food Safety urges the public not to consume Tous Les Jours PC Sardines Tomate (3 x 120g; Product of Morocco; Best before January 20, 2015; Batch #BJL 020F) and Tous Les Jours Sardines in Oil (3 x 120g; Product of Morocco; Best before January 19, 2017; Batch #BJL 019F), due to high levels of histamine. The products were imported into Hong Kong by PARKnSHOP in mid-April, 2012.

  • Allergy Alert: Honeyville Honey Farm (Durango, CO) recalls Honeyville Honey Barbecue Sauce (15-oz bottles; UPC 0-3880171212-9; Manufactured August 1, 2011; Sold August 1, 2011 to May 21, 2012; No lot code or expiration date), because the product contains undeclared anchovies. This recall does not apply to bottles with an add-on sticker that reads “CONTAINS ANCHOVIES.” Recalled products were distributed nationwide through retail internet sales and in retail stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: Taylor Farms Retail, Inc. recalls Private Selections Organic Baby Spinach (5-oz clamshell package; UPC 0-11110-91128-5; Best by 5-25-12; Package codes TFRS 130B 1503 KT34 and TFRS 130B 1803 KT34) and Marketside Organic Baby Spinach (10-oz clamshell package; UPC 6-8113132900-2; Best by 5-25-12; Package code TFRS130B16), because the spinach may be contaminated with Salmonella. The Private Selections Baby Spinach was distributed in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The Marketside spinach was distributed in Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.
  • Food Safety Recall: Indonesianfoodmart.com (Rockville, MD) recalls Tempeh Starter Yeast and Super Starter Yeast (all packages), because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products have been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Paratyphi B illnesses that were determined to be caused by the consumption of contaminated tempeh. The recalled Starter Yeast products were distributed throughout the USA and internationally through direct mail orders, and also were distributed in Australia, Canada, Slovenia, New Zealand, Brunei, Darussalam, Poland and Croatia.
  • Food Recall: Giant Eagle advises its customers that the manufacturer has recalled DaVinci Pesto Genovese Sauce (UPC 7067000822; Lot #E18911, E19311, E31311, E31411, E03212, & E03812; Sale by dates 07-08-2013, 07-12-2013, 11-09-2013, 11-10-2013, 02-01-2014 & 02-07-2014, respectively), due to mislabeling.

  • Food Safety Recall: Indonesianfoodmart.com (Rockville, MD) recalls Tempeh Starter Yeast and Super Starter Yeast (all packages), because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella.   • Food Safety Recall (Sweden): Scan recalls Ham, smoked Lacko (Batch #120 515; Pack date 12-05-15; Best before 12-06-12), Smoked Ham (Batch #120 515; Pack date 12-05-15; Best before 12-06-14), The Basement Smoked Ham (Batch #120 515; Pack date 12-05-15; Best before 12-06-12), Nötrulle (Batch #120 515; Pack date 12-05-15; Best before 12-06-09) and Pastrami (Batch #120 515; Pack date 12-05-15; Best before 12-06-12), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The contaminant is thought to have originated in the production environment.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Aldi Nord recalls Packham’s Triumph Pears from Argentina, due to the presence of carbendazim (a pesticide) residues.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (United Kingdom): Lincoln Medical Limited recalls Anapen pre-filled syringes, Adronaline (Epinephrine) autoinjector (500mcg in 0.3ml solution for injection, 300mcg in 0.3ml solution for injection, and Junior 150mcg in 0.3ml solution for infection) because a potential problem with delivery time and delivery volume of the dosage following activation of the autoinjector has been identified during development work, which could result in a failure to deliver any adrenaline at all in an emergency situation.

  • Allergy Alert: West Best Foods, Inc. (Las Vegas, NV) recalls West Best Foods Inc. Lasagna with Meat Sauce (24-lb cases; Est 6080; Produced between April 13, 2012 and May 21, 2012) and West Best Foods Inc. Deluxe Beef Lasagna (24-lb cases; Est 6080; Produced between April 13, 2012 and May 21, 2012), because of misbranding and the presence of undeclared soy. The recalled products were distributed to hotels and one distributor in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Allergy Alert: Harris Teeter recalls HT Traders Sorbet (Lemon, Raspberry, Mango, Coconut and Orange flavors), due to the presence of undeclared milk protein.
  • Food Safety Recall: Pacific Coast Fruit Company (Portland, OR) recalls multiple types of bagged processed salads (Please see recall notice for detailed list of affected products), because the salads may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled salads, which contain some of the salads that were recalled by River Ranch, were distributed to Fred Meyer, Avanti, and Evergreen in Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Idaho, and were supplied to VA food service in 5-lb to 20-lb bags as salad kits.
  • Food Safety Recall: Kroger recalls Private Selection Organic Baby Spinach, because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled spinach was sold in Southwest, Dillons, King Soopers, Frys, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Food 4 Less, QFC & Smith’s retail stores.
  • FDA Enforcement Action: U.S. Marshals, acting at the request of the Food and Drug Administration, have seized HybriSil (methylprednisolone acetate 1% percent in silicone gel), an unapproved new drug marketed by Crescendo Therapeutics, LLC (Vista, CA).
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Process Managers, LLC (Winchester, KY) that a December 2011 inspection of the company’s facility found that the firm manufactures and distributes products for animal consumption. FDA’s review of the products’ labeling revealed that CalDensity® and Want A Snack™ are drugs, as they are intended for use in the mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in animals. FDA considers these products to be unapproved new animal drugs and the company’s marketing of them violates the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Capitol Foods, Inc. (Washington, DC) that a March 2012 inspection of the company’s food warehouse and ready-to-eat shrimp egg roll manufacturing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Smak Sp. z.o.o. c/o and Prymat Sp. z.o.o. (44-337 Jastrzebie Zdroj, Poland) that a January 2012 inspection of the Smak Sp. acidified food facility revealed serious deviations from the acidified food regulations.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Reaction Nutrition, L.L.C. (Carnegie, PA) that a November/December 2011 inspection of the company’s dietary supplement manufacturing and packaging facility found a number of significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for dietary supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Inova Health System (Falls Church, VA) that a January/February 2012 inspection of Inova Blood Donor Services (Sterling, VA) documented numerous significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for blood and blood products.

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Mozami A/S recalls Irma’s ecological balance Smoked Fillet (Product of Germany; 80g; Package date 07-05-2012; Best before 28-06-2012) and Irma’s ecological balance Salami with Peppercorns (Product of Germany; 90g; Package date 07-05-2012; Best before 11-06-2012), due to incorrect expiration dates. Correct Best before dates should be 28-05-2012 for both products.
  • Outbreak Alert (UK/Canary Islands Cruise): The Daily Mail reports that 170 passengers on the Boudicca were sickened with suspected norovirus during a 13-day trip to the Canary Islands. Some of the infected passengers were quarantined during the cruise. The ship was met by National Health Service staff and ambulance crews when it docked in Greenock, Scotland.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0669): Salmonella Agona in soybean meal from Italy; distributed to Austria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0672): Unauthorized formic acid in white sour cabbage from Poland; distributed to Slovakia.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0676): Pentachlorophenol in guar gum from India; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0679): Excessive sulphite in dried apricots from Turkey, via Lithuania; distributed to Estonia.
