United States

  • Allergy Alert: True Nutrition recalls Whey Protein Concentrate (1 lb; Batch/lot 0120712; Exp 05/2015), Whey Protein Isolate Cold-Filtration (1 lb; Batch/lot 0030812; Exp. 07/2015), Whey Protein Isolate MicroFiltrated (1 lb; Batch/lot 0040812, Exp. 07/2015), Whey Protein Isolate Cross-Flow Microfiltration (1 lb; Batch/lot 0730712; Exp 07/2015), and Hydrolyzed Whey Protein High Grade (1 lb; Batch/lot 0680512; Exp. 05/2015), because the labels fail to declare milk as the source of the whey. The recalled products were distributed through the website www.trunutrition.com.
  • Pet Food Safety Withdrawal: Bil-Jac withdraws Adult Select Formula Dog Food (6 lb bags; Batch #1792-02; Exp. 27 DEC 13), after receiving a few reports of mold in bags from this batch, caused by higher moisture content in the food. Bil-Jac has requested retailers to removed this batch from warehouses and stores.
  • Food Safety Alert: Rudolph Foods, a Dallas pork rinds producer has stopped production for one week after finding Salmonella on the floor in a “pre-cook” area of the production facility. None of the four positive Salmonella samples were from product contact surfaces or from finished products.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: North American Produce Sales (Vancouver, BC) updates its earlier Health Hazard Alert to include additional product brand information. The company has recalled Daniella brand Mangoes (Product of Mexico; sold as individual fruit with sticker bearing PLU #4959), because the mangoes have been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup infections. The recalled mangoes were sold at various (as yet unnamed) retail stores between July 12 and August 14, 2012 and were distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon. As of August 22, 2012 the Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed cases of Salmonella Braenderup in British Columbia (17 cases) and Alberta (22 cases).
  • Food Safety Recall: Odra Deli and Wholesale Meat Ltd. (Mississauga, ON) recalls Krakowska Sausage (variable weight pkgs of sliced sausage), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled meat was sold from the deli counter at Odra Deli and Wholesale Meat Ltd. in Mississauga, ON during August 9th to 20th, inclusive.

  • Allergy Alert: Bay Valley Foods (Oak Brook, IL) recalls Naturally Fresh® Roasted & Glazed Pecan Pieces Salad Toppings (3.5-oz pouch-type package; UPC (0)7653905520(0); Best by 07 APR 13 and 08 APR 13), because some of the packages may contain undeclared almonds. The recalled product was distributed between June 26, 2012, and August 22, 2012, in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas, including in Kroger stores (Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Knoxville, Tennessee, Greater Memphis, TN, Arkansas, Mississippi and Western Kentucky, Texas and Louisiana) and in Publix.
  • Food Safety Withdrawal: Protica, Inc. (Whitehall, PA) withdraws Body Choice Protein Shots (3-oz vial; Manufacture date Dec 20, 2011; Lot #PP 3541 2924), Nutritional Resources Protein Wave gelatin (6-oz cup; Manufacture date May 03 2012; Lot #PP 1242 6123) ProBalance Protein to Go French Vanilla Latte (2.5-oz bottle; Manufacture dates 9/8/2011, 10/11/2011, 10/18/2011, 12/6/2011, 2/13/2012, 4/2/2012, 4/4/2012, 4/11/2012, 4/24/2012, 5/1/2012, 5/8/2012, 6/8/2012) and Protein to Go Milk Chocolate Shake (2.5-oz bottle; Manufacture dates 2/9/12, 2/13/12, 2/16/12, 4/12/12, 4/25/12, 5/3/12, 5/8/12), because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The products were distributed nationally through retail and direct mail.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: North American Produce Sales (Vancouver, BC) recalls Mangoes (Product of Mexico; Individual fruit bearing PLU #4959; Sold between July 12th and August 14th), because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup. Several confirmed illnesses are associated with the consumption of the mangoes. The recalled fruit may have been was sold at various retail stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fine Choice Foods Ltd. recalls Sum-m! Crispy Vegetable Spring Rolls (Lot #3045; Production date July 11th; Expiry date August 22nd), due to two reports of a customer finding small pieces of aluminum in the product. The recalled Spring Rolls were sold at Costco Wholesale outlets in Canada.
  • Outbreak Alert (PEI): CBC reports that the PEI Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness – suspected to be due to norovirus – at the Stanhope Beach Resort and Conference Centre. Approximately 60 people complained of nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps or diarrhea after attending events at the resort. Test results are pending.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Proprietary Medicine Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health asks the public not to buy or consume the unregistered proprietary Chinese medicine “Quan Xie Jin Gu Tong,” as it may contain the undeclared Western drug ingredients diclofenac, piroxicam and prednisone acetate.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1220): Benzalkonium chloride in passion fruit juice powder from Germany; distributed to Denmark, Germany, Japan and Sweden.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): More than 110 residents of the Darfield area have developed gastroenteritis after drinking contaminated water. The Selwyn District Council issued a boil-water notice after E. coli was found in some parts of the Waimakariri River. Six of the outbreak victims have been confirmed to be suffering from Campylobacter infections.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Spence & Co. Ltd. (Brockton, MA) recalls Wellsley Farms brand Nova Smoked Salmon (16 oz; Lot 6704701) and Spence & Co. brand Smoked Salmon Trim (8 oz; Lot 6704701), because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled Wellsley Farms Nova was distributed to BJ’s Wholesale Club in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Ohio on 6.13.12. The recalled Spence & Co. Ltd. Trim was distributed to Krogers, King Soopers, and City Market stores in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Colorado, Wyoming and Utah between 6.22.12 and 6.29.12.
  • Food Safety Recall: Dole Fresh Vegetables recalls Dole Italian Blend bagged salad (10 oz pkg; Use by August 20; UPC 7143000819), due to possible health risk from Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled salads were distributed in Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Mississippi and Virginia, including in Giant Food Stores. The recall was issued after a sample of Dole Italian Blend salad was found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes in a random sample test conducted by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.
  • Food Safety Recall: Chamberlain Farm Produce, Inc. (Owensville, IN) recalls all of its cantaloupes from the 2012 season, because some cantaloupes may be contaminated with a strain of Salmonella Typhimurium that is responsible for 178 reported illnesses in 21 states.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Hoffman Town & Country Meat Market (Detroit Lakes, MN) recalls Whole-Muscle Turkey Jerky (all products sold on or before August 21, 2012), after state investigators linked the product to four cases of Salmonella illness among Minnesota residents. All four individuals – one of whom was hospitalized – reported eating turkey jerky during the week prior to becoming ill.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Champ’s Mushrooms (Aldergrove, BC) recalls Champ’s Mushrooms brand Sliced White Mushrooms (Product of Canada; 227g/8-oz pkgs; UPC 0 33383 67600 5; Packed on date PO 10AUG2012 or PO 11AUG 2012), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was distributed in British Columbia and Alberta, and may also have been distributed in other provinces.
