United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Mergimtari Meat & Grocery (565 E. 187th Street, Bronx, NY) recalls in-store made “Dry Sausage” (all packages), due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for breaded chicken breast products recalled by Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. due to undercooking.
  • Veterinary Medicine Safety Recall: Pfizer Animal Health recalls Dexdomitor (Lot #1391999; Expiry January 2014) and Antisedan (Lot #1399276; Expiry March 2014), after foreign particles originating from a glass vial manufacturing defect were found in the products.
  • Outbreak Alert: A female student at Chatham University (Pennsylvania) has been diagnosed with typhoid fever. No other cases have been reported, according to WPXI news.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Montana Department of Health and Human Services has received several reports since early September of gastroenteritis outbreaks involving several hundred people throughout the state in schools, child day care settings and nursing homes, according to a statement released today. In outbreaks where lab testing was performed, the cause of the illness was found to be Norovirus.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): The Co-operative recalls Free From Pure Oat Muesli, 450g (Best before 22/07/12), due to intermittent contamination with wheat gluten.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Delicious Alchemy recalls its Gluten Free Rolled Oats, 450g (Best before 4 August 2012, 5 September 2012, 6 September 2012) and Gluten Free Purely Oaty Fruity Nut Muesli, 450g (Best before 4 August 2012, 5 September 2012, 6 September 2012), because the products may contain undeclared wheat gluten.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC recalls Morrisons Value Low Fat Fruit Yogurt (4-pack; Use by 28 September 2011), because it might contain small metal pieces.
  • Food Safety Recall Update (Belgium): Delhaize recalls three additional lots of Frozen Cocktail Shrimp (51/60 size). The additional lots are #1071525, 1072177 and 1074286. The recall was initiated due to the presence of an antibiotic residue.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1286): Suspicion of shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli (O 26 (potentially present), vtx1 positive, vtx2 positive, eae positive) in veal meat from the Netherlands; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1287): Salmonella in whey powder in bulk from the Netherlands; distributed to Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1288): Salmonella in sprouting seeds dispatched from Germany, via Switzerland; distributed to France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1290): Mold infestation in orange jelly-filled sponge cakes from Poland; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1291): Unauthorized chlortetracycline in fresh beef from Germany; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1292): Campylobacter jejuni in chilled whole chicken from Germany; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1294): Mercury in chilled dogfish from France; distributed to Italy.

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Insight Pharmaceuticals recalls Nostrilla 12-Hour Nasal Decongestant (Batch/Lot 11G075), due to the potential presence of a microbial contaminant that exceeds product specifications and may result in infection in individuals with a compromised immune system or those with chronic lung conditions.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The Cherry Company, Ltd (Honolulu, HI) that a July 2011 inspection revealed a serious violation of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Paramount Muffins, LLC (Newark, NJ) that a May/June 2011 inspection of the company’s manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Postres de Aqui, Inc. (San Juan, PR) that a March/April 2011 inspection of the company’s food product manufacturing facility revealed that the firm’s products are not labeled in accordance with the Food Labelling regulation.

  • Food Safety Recall: Metro Ontario Inc. (Etobicoke, ON) recalls unwrapped, unlabeled cantaloupes sold from Food Basics, 2452 Sheppard Ave. E., North York, Ontario on September 12, 2011, because the cantaloupes may be contaminated with Salmonella.

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd. recalls Sainsbury’s Freefrom Pure Oats, 450g (Best before July, August, and September 2012), after testing finds low levels of undeclared wheat gluten in some packets.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Delhaize Belgique recalls Delhaize brand Frozen Cocktail Shrimp (500g; 51/60 size; Product of China; Lot #1072365; Best before 23/05/2013), due to the presence of antibiotic residues in excess of permitted limits.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark); Jensen & Köppen ApS recalls United Parsley (120g; Lot 1209; Product of Italy), due to Salmonella contamination.

  • Food Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Food Safety ordered the temporary closure of the fish portion of PARKnSHOP Superstore (Tsuen Wan, New Territories), after Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor serotype Ogawa was found in a water sample taken from a fish tank inside the shop.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a suspected food poisoning outbreak involving 29 students and staff from a primary school in Sham Shui Po.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): Analysis carried out by the Therapeutic Goods Administration has confirmed the presence of sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) in Black Ant Capsules. This product has not been approved for sale in Australia, but can be purchased over the Internet.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): Analysis carried out by the Therapeutic Goods Administration has confirmed the presence of sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) in Qing Tian Zhu tablets. This product has not been approved for sale in Australia, but can be purchased over the Internet.

  • Food Safety Recall: Pride & Joy Creamery, LLC (Granger, WA) recalls raw fluid milk that may be contaminated with toxin-producing E. coli. The unpasteurized milk was sold at the farm and distributed through nine retail outlets in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Skagit counties.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Country Ribbon Inc. recalls Country Ribbon Chicken Bologna (Best before 11OC19; Lot 914), due to the presence of extraneous material in the product. The recalled meat was distributed in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Alert (Singapore): The Health Sciences Authority has suspended the licence of Zerin® tablets, 500mg, manufactured by Jayson Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and distributed in Singapore by Ziwell Medical (S) Pte Ltd. The action was taken due to product defects recently found with the product.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Fonterra Brands (Australia) Pty. Ltd. recalls Mainland Extra Tasty Cheddar Cheese (200g and 400g; Best before 28 February 2012; Product of New Zealand), due to the presence of metal fragments in the cheese.
