United States

  • Food Safety Recall: D’Orazio Foods, Inc. (Bellmawr, NJ) recalls Albertsons’ Sausage Ravioli, Jewel Sausage Ravioli, Albertsons’ Beef Ravioli, Jewel Beef Ravioli, and Our Family Beef Ravioli (all in 25-oz poly bags; Est 20146; Best if used by 12/01/11 to 12/01/12), because the frozen stuffed pasta products were produced without the benefit of federal inspection. The recalled products were manufactured between December 1, 2010 and December 1, 2011 and distributed to distribution centers in California, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Oregon, Texas and Utah.
  • Food Safety Recall: Crystal Geyser® (Calistoga, CA) recalls Tejava® Premium Iced Tea (12-oz glass bottles; Production lot code dates of 1BT220, 1BT221, 1BT222, 1BT223, 1BT252, 1BT253, 1BT254, 1BT255, 1BT277, 1BT278, 1BT279, 1BT280, and 1BT313), due to the possible presence of glass fragments. The recalled iced tea products were distributed nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall: House of Raeford Farms (Raeford, NC) recalls Boneless Oven Roasted Chicken Breast (18 to 22-lb boxes containing two 9 to 11-lb pkgs; Est #P-239A; Product Code 94268; Package date 1270), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled ready-to-eat chicken breasts were shipped to delicatessens and food service institutions for further processing in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
  • Outbreak Alert: More than 40 people who attended two events this week at the Greysolon Ballroom in Duluth, MN reported becoming ill after eating at the ballroom. The outbreak is being investigated by the Minnesota Department of Health, which received the first report of the illnesses on Tuesday, December 6th.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Marché AMI (Saint-Laurent-de-l’Île-d’Orléans, QC) recalls Pâté au saumon, Pâté à la viande and Pâté au poulet, due to the presence of undeclared egg.
  • Allergy Alert: Marché du Faubourg St-Amable inc. IGA and Marché du Faubourg Ste-Julie inc. IGA Extra recall Barre maïs can/tourn (250g), due to the presence of undeclared milk.
  • Food Safety Recall: Canard Goûteux (Saint-Christophe d’Arthabaska, QC) recalls Rillettes de canard (250-mL glass jars; sold unrefrigerated on or before December 2, 2011), because the product was stored at a temperature that could render it unsafe for human consumption.

Europe

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Vietnam): More than 300 workers at a Hanoi glove factory were hospitalized with suspected food poisoning after eating their lunch at work. The employees complained of dizziness and nausea.
  • Food Safety Enforcement (China): A Chinese dairy farmer will pay with her life for deliberately tainting her rival’s milk supply with sodium nitrite. The woman’s actions apparently resulted in the death of three children, and 36 hospitalizations. The woman’s husband was sentenced to a life term for purchasing the poison on behalf of his wife.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Simplot Australia Pty Ltd. recalls Neptune Frozen Crumbed Squid Rings (1kg; Product of China; All best before dates up to and including 20/06/13), due to the presence of undeclared egg. The product was distributed to wholesale grocery outlets nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Resmi International Pty Ltd recalls Grandma’s Tapioca Chips (200g; Product of India; Date marking 08.2012) and Manjilas Tapioca Chips Spicy (180g; Product of India; Date marking 14.06.2012), due to high levels of naturally occurring cyanide. The recalled products were distributed in NSW, ACT, VIC, WA and QLD.

  • Allergy Alert (UK): The Food Standards Agency has been informed that Marks and Spencer Garlic and Coriander Butterfly Prawns have been sold without the presence of milk being declared in the allergy information panel. People with a milk allergy should avoid consuming this product. Marks and Spencer has stopped production of the product and will re-label with the correct information.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium and France): Ilhan Food recalls Nefis Kimyon Toz Cumin (80g, 200g, 400g, and 800g sachets; supplied by Yenghes Spices, Netherlands; all lots from 2011; product names include kimyon toz, komijn gemalen, and cumin moulu), after traces of Salmonella were found in the 80g sachets.
  • Contact Lens Recall (UK): 4Care AG recalls Lenscare SH-System Monatslinsen contact lenses (Product of Germany; various lot codes), after traces of silicone oil were found on some lenses. Please refer to the recall notice for a list of affected lot codes.
  • Contact Lens Recall (UK and Ireland): CooperVision expands its recall of Avaira™ Toric contact lenses to include specific lots of Avaira™ Sphere contact lenses, some of which were sold in the UK and Ireland. Please refer to the recall notice for a list of affected lot codes that were distributed in the UK.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1794): Mercury in chilled swordfish from France; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1795): Mercury in chilled greater amberjack from Greece; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1796): Suspicion of illegal trade of frozen eel from France; distributed to France and Portugal.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1800): Corrosion of apple juice from Sweden; distributed to Denmark.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Abu Dhabi): The Food Control Authority (ADFCA) has ordered the closure of Fuala Trading Company in Abu Dhabi City due to violation of food safety rules. ADFCA said that the “…general hygienic conditions were utterly bad, with cockroaches running around and the place very unclean.”
  • Contact Lens Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health advises the public that 4Care AG has recalled certain lots of Lenscare SH-System Monatslinsen contact lenses, due to the presence of traces of silicone oil on the lenses. While these lenses were not marketed in Hong Kong, some individuals may have purchased the recalled contact lenses from abroad. Please refer to the Safety Alert for a list of recalled lot codes.

  • Allergy Alert: Mars Food US recalls Uncle Ben’s® Whole Grain White Rice Garden Vegetable (4.7-oz box; Best Before 08/12; Code dates 133BA4RP06 and 133BB4RP06), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The product was distributed in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont and Wisconsin through retail stores, including Walmart.
  • Allergy Alert: See’s Candies, Inc. recalls Almond Clusters (8-oz; Code #SF 088/12), because the candies may contain undeclared peanuts. The recalled product was distributed to See’s Holiday Gift Centers and Licensee locations in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, New York, Nebraska, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana.
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: Cargill Animal Nutrition recalls Professional Formula River Run Hi-NRG 24-20 Dog Food (50-lb bags), River Run Professional Formula 27-18 Dog Food (50-lb bags), River Run 21% Protein Dog Food (40-lb and 50-lb bags), River Run Hi-Pro No-Soy Dog Food (40-lb and 50-lb bags), Marksman Dog Food 24% Protein 20% Fat (40-lb bags), Marksman Dog Food 20% Protein 10% Fat (40-lb and 50-lb bags) and Marksman Dog Food 28% Protein 18% Fat (40-lb bags), due to aflatoxin levels that wee detected above the acceptable limit. The affected products were manufactured between Dec. 1, 2010 and Dec. 1, 2011 and bear Packaging Date Codes 4K0335 through 4K0365, LL0335 through LL0365, 4K1001 through 4K1335 and LL1001 through LL1335. The recalled products were distributed through retailers in Kansas, Missouri, Northeast Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Western Kentucky, Southeast Indiana, Southern Illinois, Hawaii, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and limited areas of Florida and California.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fair Oaks Dairy Products, LLC (Fair Oaks, IN) recalls Fair Oaks Farms Fine Cheese brand one-half pound retail packaged cheeses and cheese gift boxes (Sold between September 30, 2011 and December 3, 2011) after lab analysis of a 4-year aged Cheddar cheese confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. Recalled varieties include Asiago, Butterkase, Gouda, Aged Gouda, Smoked Gouda, Havarti, Pepper Havarti, Habanero Havarti, Onion Havarti, Veggie Havarti, Havarti Dill, Sweet Swiss, Smoked Sweet Swiss, Emmentaler, Calico, Mozzarella, Farmers, Cheese Curds, Muenster, Provolone, Lacy Swiss, Cheddar, Cheddar Mild, 1 yr. Cheddar, 2 yr. Cheddar, 3 yr. Cheddar, 4 yr. Cheddar, and 5 yr. Cheddar. The affected cheeses were sold at the Fair Oaks Dairy store in Northwest Indiana, and were distributed either directly or through distributors to other stores in Northern and Central Indiana and Northeast Illinois. One store in Sulphur Springs (Texas) also was supplied with the recalled cheese.
  • Food Recall/Withdrawal: Food City advises its customers that Tribe Hummus Party Tray (18-oz) has been recalled/withdrawn by the manufacturer.
  • Outbreak Alert: Magnolia Regional Health Center (Corinth, MS) has confirmed 11 cases of Salmonella since November 28th. No source of the infections has yet been identified.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Maysum withdraws Maysum 20 frozen Chicken Samosas (675g; Best before 2 November 2013) and Maysum 20 frozen Vegetable Samosas (675g; Best before 8 November 2013), due to the presence of undeclared sulfites.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Intermarché – Ecomarché recalls Guillaume Dunoy bloc de foie gras de canard (150g semi conserve; Best before 15/08/2013 and 23/08/2013; Lot #601151048091 and 601151056071, respectively), because the products were not maintained at the proper storage temperature, and represent a risk for the consumer.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium & Luxembourg): Bleuzé Interfood NV recalls certain À l’Olivier brand vinaigrettes, sold at Smatch, Match and Match Luxembourg stores. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of recalled products.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): Laboratoires Ranbaxy Pharmacie Génériques recalls Furosemide Ranbaxy 40mg/20mg diuretic pills (Lots C200/Exp 11/2012, H201/Exp 07/2013, H202/Exp 10/2013 and W203/Exp 02/2014), because the dissolution rate drops significantly over time.
  • Contact Lens Safety Recall (Spain): CooperVision Spain S.L. recalls various contact lenses (manufactured by CooperVision Manufacturing Ltd., UK), due to the presence of a silicone oil residue on the lenses. The following brands are affected by this recall: Avaira, A Hisi, Albalens Silicone, Carla 3 Silicona, Cecop Silicone, Centro OP. Jose Manuel Marquez, Combisoft Nature, Delgado Espinosa Silicona, Dublan Silicona, Easygel Plus, Enfilcon DK100 Aspheric, Galindo, Gran Optica, Hidrancy Oxygen, HorizonT, Irco Vision, Lenso Active Hidro Silk, Lent Soft 4 Air, Lentigel Contact, Lentsport, Meca Opticos, Medifresh Elite, Miolent Q, My Vision Max, MyOptica, Only-You Hidrosilk, Optica Altavoz, Optica Avenida, Ramon Optica Hidramax, Soft Lens Oxygen, Verasilicon, and White light Silicone.   • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1785): Listeria monocytogenes in chilled swordfish from Madagascar; distributed to France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1786): High aluminum content in instant rice noodles from Vietnam; distributed to the Czech Republic.

  • Outbreak Alert (Australia): Raw egg used to make mayonnaise at the Silo bakery in Kingston (ACT) has been linked tentatively to 13 confirmed cases of salmonellosis. Lab tests to confirm the link are still in progress. Five of the 13 victims were hospitalized with dehydration, and the bakery has been closed until the source of the outbreak is confirmed.
