United States

  • Food Safety Recall: AA Meat Products Corporation (Maywood, CA; Espt. 21492) recalls various meat and poultry products, produced between January 11, 2011 and February 8, 2012, because they may have been produced without the benefit of federal inspection. The recalled products were sold within California. Please see the recall notice for details.
  • Outbreak Alert: Forty people at the Carriage House Estates retirement community have been quarantined after having become infected with norovirus. The facility has undergone extensive cleaning and sanitation, and visitors are asked to wear masks and gloves to prevent further spread of the virus.
  • Outbreak Alert: Framingham State University is reporting an increase in the number of cases of gastroenteritis over the past month. Norovirus is suspected.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Campylobacter outbreak associated with consumption of raw milk from Your Family Cow dairy in Chambersburg, PA has grown to 71 confirmed victims. At least 9 people have been hospitalized. Confirmed cases are reported from Pennsylvania (62), Maryland (4), West Virginia (3) and New Jersey (2).
  • Outbreak Alert: Twelve people in five states have been infected with a shiga toxin-producing strain of E. coli O26. The infections are due most probably to infected raw clover sprouts served at Jimmy John’s restaurant outlets.

Canada

  • Consumer Product Safety Alert: Health Canada advises Canadians not to buy an unregistered, highly toxic pesticide product being imported from China and sold in various retail outlets as “insecticide chalk.” The Insecticide Chalk is not registered for use in Canada. Children are especially at risk from insecticide chalk because they can easily mistake the product for blackboard or sidewalk chalk and play with it or put it in their mouths.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert: Health Canada advises Canadians that using “MMS”, also known as Miracle Mineral Solution or Miracle Mineral Supplement may cause serious health problems. The product information lists sodium chlorite as an ingredient and is promoted as a substance that can cleanse toxins from the human body. There are no therapeutic products containing sodium chlorite authorized for oral consumption by humans in Canada.

Europe

  • Food Safety Alert (Russia): Russia has banned cheese imports from Ukraine over the failure of three Ukrainian producers to meet Russian food standards. The action has resulted in the suspension five tons of Ukrainian cheese, and has prevented the import of 128,500 tons of cheese.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Skare Meat Packers K/S recalls Vilstrup Farm minced pork/veal, 8-12% (500g; Packaged 06.02.12; Best before 14.02.12; modified atmosphere packaging), due to possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled meat was sold at LIDL stores.
  • Outbreak Alert (Russia): Eighteen kindergarten children in Chita developed gastroenteritis. Three of the children were hospitalized and the others were treated at home. Norovirus was confirmed in four of the sick children.
  • Food Safety Notification (2012.0240): Norovirus in oysters from the Netherlands; distributed to Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0241): Suspicion of fraud in relation to horse carcasses from Hungary; distributed to Italy.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.0242 & 2012.0243): Unauthorized tadalafil in food supplement from China; distributed to Finland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0244): Tin in baked beans in tomato sauce from Italy; distributed to Malta.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0247): Aflatoxins in dried figs from Turkey; distributed to Slovenia.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.0248): Unauthorized sildenafil in food supplement from Spain; distributed to France, Germany, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Venezuela.

  • Allergy Alert: Schnucks Markets, Inc. alert customers of Schnucks, Logli and Hilander stores that Schnucks Instant Beef Bouillon (UPC 4131803061; Best before NOV 18 2013) contains chicken bouillon, due to a labeling error.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Tree Top Inc. (Seattle, WA) that samples analyzed as part of a July 2011 inspection of the company’s manufacturing facility revealed elevated levels of inorganic arsenic in pear juice concentrate.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Universal Supplement, Inc. (Vista, CA) that a July 2011 inspection of the company’s dietary supplement manufacturing facility revealed failure to comply with the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations for dietary supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Flying Food Group, Inc. (Chicago, IL) that the classification of its airline catering facility has been changed from “Approved” to “Provisional” after an inspection of the facility revealed significant violations under the Public Health Service Act. In addition, the inspection revealed that the company’s contract sandwich manufacturing and ready-to eat tuna fish sandwich manufacturing activities revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Lushlife Gardens (Milford, NJ) that a November 2011 inspection of the company’s sprout processing facility, which was triggered by a sample of the company’s Saladini brand alfalfa sprouts having yielded Listeria monocytogenes, revealed insanitary conditions and the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in environmental swab samples at two locations in the facility.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Pure Encapsulations, Inc. (Sudbury, MA) that an August 2011 inspection of the company’s dietary supplement manufacturing, packaging, labeling, and holding facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for dietary supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Woeber Mustard Manufacturing Co. Inc. (Springfield, OH) that an August/September 2011 inspection of the company’s processing facility revealed serious violations of the juice Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The gastroenteritis outbreak that sickened 288 passengers and 68 crew members on the Princess Cruises’ Crown Princess, and and forced an early termination of the cruise on February 9th, has been confirmed to have been caused by norovirus.
  • Counterfeit Pharmaceutical Product Alert: Roche’s Genentech unit warns doctors and patients that counterfeit vials of Avastin (believed to be labeled with lot numbers B86017, B6011 or B6010) have been distributed in the USA. The counterfeit products do not have “Genentech” printed on the packaging. Furthermore, Avastin uses 6-digit lot numbers with no letters.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Phoenix Trading International recalls Safoco Vegetable Macaroni (200g, 300g, and 500g; Lot Code BB 12/27/2012) and Safoco Green Bean Macaroni (200g and 300g; Lot Code 12/27/2012), due to the presence of undeclared egg. The recalled products were distributed in Manitoba and British Columbia.
  • Allergy Alert: Capital Packers Inc. recalls Capital Packer’s Beer Sausage (variable size; All codes), due to the presence of  undeclared soy. The recalled product was distributed nationally.
  • Allergy Alert: Chuang’s Company Ltd. recalls Cosine Instant Pudding Powder (1kg; Code 0731), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: Poissonnerie Cowie (Granby, QC) recalls Crevettes à la szechuannaise, Gratin de sole, Panini saumon fumé et sa verdure, and L’intégrale thon, noix de Grenoble et canneberge (all lots/codes), due to the presence of undeclared wheat, soy, sesame, egg, and/or milk.

Europe

  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (UK): A.C. Hopkins (Taunton) Ltd. has been found guilty of failing to ensure that pig carcasses were immediately chilled in the slaughterhouse to achieve and maintain a temperature throughout the meat of not more than 7ºC. Sentencing has been adjourned until a date to be fixed in April.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): Laboratoires Arrow France, Mylan SAS, Sandoz France and Qualimed SAS recall Children and Infants Cefpodoxime , 40mg/5 ml oral suspension (All expiration dates prior to March 31, 2013), after Sandoz found out-of-specification dosage results for the active ingredient and product impurities during their stability studies.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0234 & 2012.0235): Undeclared peanut in walnut ice cream from Germany; distributed to the Czech Republic, Germany and Hungary.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0236): Salmonella Havana in rapeseed meal from Denmark, with raw material from Poland; distributed to Sweden.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0237): Salmonella Mbandaka in organic soya meal from Italy, via Germany; distributed to Sweden.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0239): Salmonella Brancaster, Salmonella Salamae, and Salmonella spp. in gum traganth powder from Austria; distributed to Denmark.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (Taiwan): US beef ribs were removed from store displays after residues of the leanness-enhancing drug ractopamine was detected. The drug, which is allowed in animal feed in the USA, is banned in Taiwan, China, the European Union, and many other countries.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Fonterra Brands (New Zealand) Ltd recalls Mainland Salted Butter Block (500g; Best before 10 January 2013; Batch CV 12) and Anchor Salted Butter Block (500g; Best before 26 January 2013; Batch CV 28), after a fine, sharp metal object was found in a single pack of both brands. The recalled products were sold in supermarkets, dairies and service stations throughout New Zealand.

United States

  • Outbreak Alert: For the second time this year, Princess Cruises’ Crown Princess has been hit with an outbreak of what is probably (again) norovirus gastroenteritis. The ship reported what was confirmed as a norovirus outbreak on its January 28-February 4, 2012 cruise. CDC environmental health officers boarded the Crown Princess on its February 4th arrival in Ft. Lauderdale to evaluate the outbreak and the crew’s response activities. The ship was “turned around” that same day and embarked on its next scheduled cruise – one that has been cut short by two days due to a recurrence of gastroenteritis. The Crown Princess returned to port on February 9th for another CDC assessment and a super-sanitization cleaning and disinfection.” In all, 396 passengers and crew reported symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea during the January 28th – February 4th cruise; 356 passengers and crew experienced those symptoms during the abbreviated February 4-9 cruise.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. recalls Fresh Veal Cubes (Item #50088; Best Before Feb 19th, 2012), because the meat may contain pieces of metal. The recalled Fresh Veal Cubes were sold in certain Costco warehouse stores in Eastern Canada on February 9th or 10th.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert: Granovita UK Limited withdraws Granovita Mushroom Pateole Yeast Spread, labeled as gluten-free (Best before 21 April 2012), because the product contains levels of gluten that are above the limits allowed for foods labeled as gluten-free.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0222): Salmonella spp. and Cronobacter sakazakii in dried milk formulae from Belgium; distributed to Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Syria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0223): Salmonella spp. in chilled beef trimmings from Ireland; distributed to Sweden.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0225): Monocrotophos, omethoate and dimethoate in okra from India; distributed to Austria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0228): Tetradifon in oranges from Turkey, via Germany; distributed to Austria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0230): Unauthorized operator for frozen chicken pasta from Italy; distributed to Italy and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0231): Salmonella enteritidis in frozen whole hens from Poland; distributed to Denmark.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0233): Undeclared gluten in mushroom yeast spread from Spain; distributed to the United Kingdom.

  • Food Safety Alert (China): Chinese authorities are reported to be investigating eggs that bounce after being boiled and are too hard to eat (referred to as “rubber eggs” or “ping pong eggs”) out of concerns that the eggs may be fake. Xinhua news agency adds that the hardness might also be explained by the laying hens consuming large quantities of feed enriched with gossypol, a residue of cotton seeds added to chicken feed as an extra source of protein.
