United States

  • Allergy Alert: Mattern Sausage (Orange, CA) recalls Mattern Sausage Tongue and Blood Sausage (4-lb to 8-lb chugs; Produced September 6, 2011), due to the presence of undeclared hydrolyzed soy protein. The recalled sausage products were shipped to sandwich shops near Orange, CA.
  • Allergy Alert: Prolab Nutrition Inc. (Chatsworth, CA) recalls certain protein items, because they contain undeclared wheat and gluten. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.
  • Food Safety Recall: Pepperidge Farm, Incorporated (Norwalk, CT) recalls Baked Naturals Sesame Sticks (10.2-oz boxes; WO7*1781 Sell by 11/20/2011, WO7*1891 Sell by 11/27/2011, WO7*1921 Sell by 12/4/2011, WO7*2041 Sell by 12/11/2011, WO7*2061 Sell by 12/13/2011, and WO7*2221 Sell by 1/1/2012), because the products may contain small, thin pieces of wire.
  • Food Safety Recall: World Wide Fish Products, Inc. (Bronx, NY) recalls Smoked Split Herring, because the product was found to be uneviscerated and represents a risk for Clostridium botulinum. The product was distributed in New York City on 08/17/2011 to Food Plaza Supermarket, NSA Supermarket (Bravo), Brooklyn # 1 Meat Market, P&P Distributors, and Flaming Meat Distributors.
  • Food Safety Recall: Palo Duro Meat (Amarillo, TX) recalls fine ground beef (40-lb boxes containing four 10-lb chubs; Production code 19110; Est. 7282), because the ground beef may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The frozen product was produced on Sept. 9, 2011, and shipped to two warehouses in Georgia for further distribution to institutions. The institutions include six school districts in Georgia associated with the National School Lunch Program.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Distributors, retailers, restaurants, and consumers have been advised not to eat, sell, or ship oysters harvested between August 30 and September 19 from Washington’s Hood Canal growing area #4. The state Department of Health made the recommendations, including contacting people who bought the oysters over the Internet, as part of a recall of oysters in the shell harvested in that growing area between those dates. Oyster harvesting in the area was closed after five people who ate raw oysters containing Vibrio parahaemolyticus became ill.
  • Outbreak Alert: More than 40 people have become ill with gastrointestinal symptoms after eating food purchased at the Grace Covenant Church fundraiser in York, South Carolina on September 16th and 17th. The state Department of Health and Environmental Control is advising people who purchased food at the fundraiser to throw it away.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Solo Fruit Inc. recalls Solo Fruit brand Dark Chocolate Sorbet (500ml packages; Lot codes 1111116 or 1111165), because the product may contain undeclared milk. The recalled sorbet was distributed only in Quebec.
  • Food Safety Recall: Phoenicia Products Inc. recalls Alkanater brand Tahini (908g containers; Prod. 5/1/2011; Exp. 5/1/2013), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled tahini was distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Au Gout d’autrefois (Sainte-Famille, QC) recalls certain products sold in 500ml and 250ml glass jars, because the products were not produced in a way that ensures their microbiological safety. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department ordered the temporary closure of a cooked food market stall in Yuen Long for thorough disinfection after Vibrio cholerae was detected in a water sample collected from its fish tank.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (Australia): South Australia Health has received reports of an additional four cases of shiga-toxin producing E. coli infections, all among people who reported visiting the Royal Adelaide Show, bringing the total number of infections to seven. Two of the seven patients have developed HUS. While most of the infections are among children, one of the HUS victims is a 27-year old man, who is receiving treatment in hospital and is reported to be in serious but stable condition.

  • Food Safety Recall: Mergimtari Meat & Grocery (565 E. 187th Street, Bronx, NY) recalls in-store made “Dry Sausage” (all packages), due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for breaded chicken breast products recalled by Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. due to undercooking.
  • Veterinary Medicine Safety Recall: Pfizer Animal Health recalls Dexdomitor (Lot #1391999; Expiry January 2014) and Antisedan (Lot #1399276; Expiry March 2014), after foreign particles originating from a glass vial manufacturing defect were found in the products.
  • Outbreak Alert: A female student at Chatham University (Pennsylvania) has been diagnosed with typhoid fever. No other cases have been reported, according to WPXI news.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Montana Department of Health and Human Services has received several reports since early September of gastroenteritis outbreaks involving several hundred people throughout the state in schools, child day care settings and nursing homes, according to a statement released today. In outbreaks where lab testing was performed, the cause of the illness was found to be Norovirus.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): The Co-operative recalls Free From Pure Oat Muesli, 450g (Best before 22/07/12), due to intermittent contamination with wheat gluten.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Delicious Alchemy recalls its Gluten Free Rolled Oats, 450g (Best before 4 August 2012, 5 September 2012, 6 September 2012) and Gluten Free Purely Oaty Fruity Nut Muesli, 450g (Best before 4 August 2012, 5 September 2012, 6 September 2012), because the products may contain undeclared wheat gluten.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC recalls Morrisons Value Low Fat Fruit Yogurt (4-pack; Use by 28 September 2011), because it might contain small metal pieces.
  • Food Safety Recall Update (Belgium): Delhaize recalls three additional lots of Frozen Cocktail Shrimp (51/60 size). The additional lots are #1071525, 1072177 and 1074286. The recall was initiated due to the presence of an antibiotic residue.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1286): Suspicion of shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli (O 26 (potentially present), vtx1 positive, vtx2 positive, eae positive) in veal meat from the Netherlands; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1287): Salmonella in whey powder in bulk from the Netherlands; distributed to Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1288): Salmonella in sprouting seeds dispatched from Germany, via Switzerland; distributed to France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1290): Mold infestation in orange jelly-filled sponge cakes from Poland; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1291): Unauthorized chlortetracycline in fresh beef from Germany; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1292): Campylobacter jejuni in chilled whole chicken from Germany; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1294): Mercury in chilled dogfish from France; distributed to Italy.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns GIB, LLC dba Brazilian Blowout (North Hollywood, CA) that Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Solution is an adulterated cosmetic, because it contains a deleterious substance, methylene glycol, that may render it injurious to users under conditions of use prescribed in the labelling.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns River Valley Ranch Ltd. (Burlington, WI) that an April/May 2011 inspection of the company’s facility revealed that the firms failure to fulfill the mandatory requirements for acidified foods renders the following products adulterated: River Valley Ranch brand Key Lime Mango Salsa, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Portabella Salsa with Key Lime Juice, Shroomschetta Mushroom Bruschetta, Portabella Pasta and Dipping Sauce, Spicy Shrooms, Dill and Garlic Pickled Mushrooms, and Wild Mushroom Burgundy Pasta and Dipping Sauce.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns King Juice Company, Inc. (Milwaukee, WI) that an April 2011 inspection of the company’s juice processing facility revealed serious violations of the juice Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Farm and Wild Fresh Paradise Gourmet Foods (Portland, OR) that an April 2011 inspection of the company’s produce repacking operation revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation in manufacturing, packing, or holding human food.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Kimriv Restaurant Group, LLC (San Diego, CA) that an April 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Hickory Smokehouse Miami, Inc. (Hialeah, FL) that an April 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns National Bakery, Inc. (Scranton, PA) that a February 2011 inspection of the company’s food manufacturing facility revealed violations that cause several of your products to be misbranded within the meaning of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Guenther’s Bakery Ltd. recalls Guenther’s Multigrain Cookies (425g; Best before up to and including Tue, 20 September 2011), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was sold in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Marchese Import Co. Ltd. recalls Cutolo Rionero Limoni in Acqua Minerale Lemonade (1.5L) and Cutolo Rionero Kinotto in Acqua Minerale (350 mL and 1.5L), due to the presence of unspecified chemical additives. The recalled products were sold in Ontario.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert (France): La Ruche (Cavaillon, Vaucluse) recalls all Les Délices de Marie Claire preserves and has suspended operations after a production batch of its Tapenade verte aux amandes was linked to eight cases of botulism. L’Institut Pasteur reports finding botulinum toxin type A in a sample of the implicated batch of tapenade.
  • Food Safety Alert (Belgium): Consumers are advised that Les Délices de Marie Claire brand Tapenade aux amandes (Lot #112005; Best before 16-12-2012) has been recalled by the manufacturer because it has been implicated in an outbreak of botulism in France. A trace-forward investigation is in progress in France; it is possible that the product may have been introduced into Belgium by summer tourists.
  • Food Safety Alert (Denmark): Consumers are advised that Les Délices de Marie Claire brand Tapenade aux amandes (Lot #112005; Best before 16-12-2012) has been recalled by the manufacturer because it has been implicated in an outbreak of botulism in France. A trace-forward investigation is in progress in France; it is possible that the product may have been introduced into Denmark by summer tourists.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): DB OKS, A/S  recalls Minced Beef, 10% (Item #2251; Production date 30-08-2011), after Listeria monocytogenes is found in the product.
  • Food Recall (Denmark): Beauvais Foods A/S recalls Beauvais Organic Oatmeal with spelt, banana and strawberries (200g) and Beauvais Organic 7-Grain porridge (200g), because micro-holes have been found in the foil pouches in some packages.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1186): Insect larvae in wheat flour from Malta; distributed to Malta.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1188): Unauthorized formic acid in sour cabbage from Poland; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1189): Listeria monocytogenes in salmon from Latvia; distributed to Austria.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.1190): Dioxins in copper sulphite from Israel; distributed to Belgium.

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Global Medical Solutions Hong Kong Ltd recalls Neurolite for Inj with Buffer Vial (Lot No. 0200U and 0200U1), as the drug’s US manufacturer (Ben Venue Laboratories Inc) has initiated an international recall after finding particulate matter – likely stainless steel – in the product.
  • Outbreak Alert (India): Thirty-six children were hospitalized in Hyderabad with food poisoning symptoms after consuming food purchased from a roadside vendor in Miyapur.
  • Outbreak Alert (India): More than 100 people – most of them students – were hospitalized in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts with food poisoning symptoms.
  • Outbreak Alert (Thailand): One woman is dead and 42 others in Sa Kaew’s Khao Chakan district have been hospitalized with food poisoning after consuming improperly cooked pork at a funeral.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Alert (New Zealand): High levels of norovirus have been found in shellfish in Canterbury river mouths, according to a report published in the New Zealand Herald online.
