  • Allergy Alert: J Bar B Foods of Texas / Armour-Eckrich Meats LLC recalls Eckrich Smoked Sausage Hog Casing Bulk Pack Rope (one 11-lb package/case; Use by date of March 26 2012 or later), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The product was distributed to the Southwest USA, including to a small number of US Foods Inc. customers.
  • Food Safety Recall: Club Chef LLC recalls Private Selection Pico de Gallo (12 oz; Use by 3/27/2012; UPC 11111091135) Private Selection Hot Salsa (12 oz; Use by 3/27/201; UPC 1111091139) Private Selection Mild Salsa (12 oz; Use by 3/27/2012; UPC 1111091137), heinen’s Hot Salsa (16 oz; Use by 3/27/2012; UPC 2060100024) and heinen’s Mild Salsa (16 oz; Use by 3/27/2012; UPC 2060100026), because the jalapeno peppers used in these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed to retailers and foodservice distributors on 3/14/12 and 3/15/12 in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, Indiana, and Illinois.
  • Outbreak Alert (Alabama): Customers of McDonald’s, located at 2000 McFarland Blvd, Northport may have been exposed to hepatitis A virus through an infected employee, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health. Anyone who visited this location on March 14, 2012, or during breakfast hours on March 16, 2012 should contact his or her health care provider. Customers visiting this McDonald’s location between Feb 28th and March 14th may have become exposed to hepatitis A virus.

  • Food Safety Recall: Price Chopper recalls Price Chopper Home Style Gravy (12 oz.; All varieties; UPC 41735-16508, 41735-16509, 41735-16511, 41735-16507, and 41735-16510), due to the presence of unidentified material in the jars.
  • Food Quality Recall: Bi-Lo recalls Southern Home Vegetable Juice (46-oz PET; UPC 6 07880 01793; all lot codes) and Southern Home Tomato Juice (46-oz PET; UPC 6 07880 01794; all lot codes), due to a quality issue.
  • Food Safety Alert Update: The Missouri Department of Agriculture has announced that state inspection has resumed at Alma Meats, after the business addressed violations identified in January 2012. A state inspector will be present at Alma each day during processing.
  • Dietary Supplement Withdrawal: C.B. Fleet Company, Inc. withdraws Lax Fiber Gummies Daily Fiber Supplement, 60-count (Lot Nos. 42414, 43136, 43831, 45189, 45656, 46425, 46885, 47353, 47771, 47949, 48260, 48742, 48994, 49206, 49793, 50301, 50587, 51491, 51966, and 53147), because Gummie dietary supplements of a different type are co-mingled with the fiber dietary supplement. The product was sold in VG’s Grocery, VG’s Fresh Market,  Spartan, Valu Land, Glen’s Markets, Glen’s Fresh Market, Family Fare Supermarkets, and D&W Fresh Market stores.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Farmer John’s Herbs recalls Farmer John’s Herbs brand “Mud Pie” Macaroon Cookie Mix (400g; All codes; UPC 7 73353 60077 6), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled cookie mix was distributed through retailers in Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Ontario.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Vita Health Products recalls Rexall Extra Strength Sinus Relief Daytime and Nightime Caplets “combo pack” (Lot #00058398B), due to a labeling error. Health Canada advises that the text printed on the back of the blister foil incorrectly identifies the nighttime caplets as the daytime caplets and the daytime caplets as nighttime caplets.
  • Unauthorized Health Product Alert: Health Canada advises that the unauthorized health product, “Power-X” has been removed from store shelves at the Chong Kun Dang Health store in Burnaby, BC after Health Canada’s testing identified undeclared thiodimethylsildenafil in the product. Consumers should be aware that the product may also be available for sale elsewhere.

  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Inex Partners Oy recalls Rainbow Suklaahippukakut/Chocolate chip cakes (350g; Best before 11/05/2012) because the product may contain pieces of plastic.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (UK): Moorfields Pharmaceuticals recalls Bevacizumab, prepared for intraocular use (Batch Nos. 003673, 003679, 003748, 003749, 003750, 003812, 003752, 003773, 003777, 003784, 003786, 003793, 003833, 003868(?), 003795, 003798, 003805, 003829, 003832, 003837, 003840, 003844, 003883, 003852 and 003861), after a small group of patients developed signs and symptoms consistent with a sterile endophthalmitis after receiving an intravitreal injection of Bevacizumab.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0375): Parasitic infestation with nematodes of canned cod liver from Poland; distributed to Bulgaria and Poland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0376): Glass fragments in chocolate chip cake from Denmark; distributed to Denmark and Finland.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0377): Undeclared milk ingredient in dark chocolate and dark chocolate containing dried fruit from Spain; distributed to Portugal and Spain.

  • Chinese Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): The Department of Health alerts the public not to buy or consume the unregistered proprietary Chinese medicine Tong Ren Xiu Fu Kou Fu Yi Dao Su, as it may contain the undeclared and banned Western drugs phenformin and glibenclamide.
  • Outbreak Alert (India): Two children died of food poisoning in Ghazipur district and more than 30 others participants at a fair were admitted to a community health center, complaining of symptoms. Police are investigating food vendors that sold food during the fair.

  • Food Safety Recall: R&R Importers (Montclair, CA) and Shah Distributors, Inc. (Gardena, CA) recall Chef’s Pride Rewadi Candy (7-oz semi-round clear plastic container; Imported from Pakistan) and Shah’s Deer brand Revdi Sesame Candy and Revdi (Gud) Sesame Candy (14-oz clear plastic bags; Imported from India), because the candies contain lead in excess of permitted levels.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Au Petit Bedon inc. (Québec, QC) recalls Boeuf en conserve and Boeuf aux légumes (packed in glass Mason jars; sold on or before March 1, 2012), because these perishable products may not have been held continuously at refrigeration temperatures following their purchase. The product labels lack the direction “Garder réfrigéré” (Keep refrigerated).

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc recalls Morrisons Carvery Cooked Ham (250g; Use by 13.3.12), because the product contains undeclared mustard.
  • Food Safety Withdrawal (Denmark): Summerbird A/S withdraws various Summerbird chocolate Easter eggs, including gift box collections and individual Easter eggs (approx. 30g net wt; All dates), because of a high concentration of yeast in the marzipan used in the filling of the eggs.
  • Food Alert (Belgium): La société Lorre NV advises consumers that Pignons de pin Marque Bingonuts (200g and 1kg bags; Product of China; Lot 5590; Best before 15/07/2012) contains traces of the Armandii type of pine nuts, which can produce a bitter aftertaste in some people.
  • Cosmetic Product Safety Recall (France): French authorities have ordered the recall of Rio Keratin “Grape Extract” Brazilian Keratin Treatment, Step 2 (118 ml and 946 ml plastic bottles; Lot #2549031), because the product contains excessive formaldehyde.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0323): Salmonella spp. and excessive Enterobacteriaceae in fish meal from Germany; distributed to Belgium.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0324): Dead insects in dried figs from Turkey, via Slovakia; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0325): Salmonella spp. in frozen mechanically separated chicken meat from Poland; distributed to Lithuania.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0327): Mercury in mako shark defrosted from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0328): Salmonella in dog chews from Brazil; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0329): Metal fragments (threads) in hazelnuts from Azerbaijan, via Germany and via Poland; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0330): Imazalil in fresh pears from the Netherlands; distributed to Germany, the Netherlands and Poland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0331): Carbendazim in pumpkin from France; distributed to the Netherlands.

  • Outbreak Alert (India): More than 150 attendees at a wedding feast in Taufapur village fell ill after partaking in the feast. Food samples have been submitted for testing by health authorities.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert Update (New Zealand): At least 31 cases of hepatitis A have been confirmed in the Auckland region, according to an online report by The New Zealand Herald. Students at as many as nine Auckland schools have been infected. The youngest victim is a 1-year-old baby; the oldest is 19. The Auckland Regional Public Health Service is investigating.
