United States

  • Allergy Alert: Global Culinary Investments (Spring, TX) recalls Luca Chicken Empanada (50-count bags in 10-lb bulk cases; Case code 10853349004002; Est. P-44923; Best by March 4, 2013 to May 21, 2013), due to the presence of undeclared monosodium glutamate. The recalled products were distributed for institutional use in the Houston, TX area.
  • Food Safety Recall: Rio Queen Citrus, Inc. (Mission, TX) recalls Karol Cherry Tomatoes (12/1 Dry Pints; Product of Mexico; Lot No. 01W45; Distributed by Interstate Fruit & Vegetable), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled cherry tomatoes were distributed at the retail level through stores in Texas and South Carolina between November 19th and November 19th.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Campbell Company of Canada recalls Campbell’s V8 Golden Autumn Carrot Soup (500mL Best before Dec 13 2012; UPC 0 63211 18274 3), due to the presence of undeclared gluten. The recalled product was sold by retailers nationally, including Whole Foods Market.
  • Allergy Alert: Richardson Foods Ltd. recalls Murray’s Pineapple Topping No. 713 (3.18 kg; Lot #1217800201; Expiry 06/17/2014), due to the presence of undeclared milk and soy. The recalled product was supplied to hotels, restaurants and institutions nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns the public not to consume the following products, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella: Krown brand Cherry tomatoes (551 ml; UPC 0 33383 65520 8; Sold November 13 to 21, 2012, inclusive) and Various store-made party trays containing cherry tomatoes sold at Safeway stores (Sold November 14 to 21, 2012, inclusive. The products, which have been recalled by importers and retailers, were distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, North West Territories and Yukon and may have been distributed nationally.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Aldi withdraws all batch codes and “best before” dates of Specially Selected Pesto Rosso Sauce (190g; Barcode 25192896), Specially Selected Pesto Genovese Sauce (190g; Barcode 25192889) and Specially Selected Tomato & Ricotta Pasta Sauce (340g; Barcode 25279474), due to the presence of undeclared egg.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Aldi withdraws all batch codes and “best before” dates of Specially Selected Pesto Rosso Sauce (190g; Barcode 25192896), Specially Selected Pesto Genovese Sauce (190g; Barcode 25192889) and Specially Selected Tomato & Ricotta Pasta Sauce (340g; Barcode 25279474), due to the presence of undeclared egg.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Buurtslagers recalls Boudin Noir aux oignons / Blood sausage with onions (2 pieces/pkg; Lot 455; Expiry 23/11/12) after Listeria monocytogenes is detected in a sample of the product.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Scandic Food recalls Whisky sauce (750g; Best before 02-02-2013), because the product may be contaminated with gas-forming lactic acid bacteria.
  • Outbreak Alert (Norway): The Folkehelseinstituttet (Public Health Institute) is investigating six cases of salmonellosis involving Salmonella Mikawasima. The six patients live in four different counties (Akershus Aust-Agder, Vest-Agder, Hordaland and Nordland); all patients are adults aged 20 – 50 years. The institute typically sees no more than 3 cases of Salmonella Mikawasima annually.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1617): Salmonella typhimurium in chilled pork meat and pork products manufactured in Norway, with raw material from Belgium; distributed to Norway.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1625): Salmonella in horopa basil from Cambodia; distributed to Finland, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1626): Excessive Escherichia coli in mussels (alive, chilled) from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1627): Salmonella enteritidis in frozen chicken breast fillet from Romania; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1628): Salmonella in chilled vacuum packed duck breasts from France; distributed to Denmark.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.1629): Undeclared lactose in chocolate sprinkle from the Netherlands; distributed to Belgium, Curaçao and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1630): Cadmium in chilled horse carcasses from Poland; distributed to Poland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1631): Acetamiprid and ethephon in peppers from Poland; distributed to Austria.

  • Food Recall (Israel): Strauss Ice Cream Packaging recalls Vanilla Chocolate Chip Cookies Ice Cream (2L pkg; Expiry 17-18.4.14) due to a labeling error. The product was erroneously labeled as “Pareve.”

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Stuart’s Seafood Market, Ltd. (Amagansett, NY) that an October 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood producessing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and  the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns HKH JVC LLC (Honolulu, HI) that an August 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Pacific Northwest Tofu, LLC (Portland, OR) that an August 2012 inspection of the company’s facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Marine Foods Express, Ltd (Houston, TX) that an August 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing and importer establishment found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.

  • Allergy Alert: Beary Berry Honey Inc. recalls Beary Berry Honey Mandarin Sesame Dressing (250 ml; UPC 8 75294 00053 7; Code 2013.09.20), due to the presence of undeclared sesame seeds and soy. The recalled product was distributed in Alberta.
  • Allergy Alert: Coleman Group of Companies recalls Lee’s Luxury Mini Snowballs (200g; UPC 5 010082 142388; Code 28 DEC 2012 D), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was distributed in Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Food Safety Recall: Birtch Farms and Estate Winery (Woodstock, ON) recalls Birtch Farms and Estate Winery brand Pumpkin Butter (110 ml and 250 ml jars; All lot codes), because the product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Indigo Books & Music Inc. recalls Cocoa Cones White Confectionery Drop Cocoa Cone (178g; Best if used by August 2013; UPC 8 98137 00388 5) and Cocoa Cones White Confectionery Chocolate Flavored Chip Cocoa Cone (178g; Best if used by August 2013; UPC 8 98137 00200 0), due to the presence of unspecified “non-harmful” extraneous material.   • Allergy Alert: Jimmy Dean® recalls Jimmy Dean French Toast & Sausage Sandwich butcher-wrapped food service product (Code 12292P1; UPC 5450051434), because the product may contain undeclared egg and soy. The recalled product was distributed in Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
  • Allergy Alert: Frito-Lay recalls GRANDMA’S Peanut Butter Sandwich Crème Cookies (3.025 oz pkgs; Sell by March 12, 2013 or earlier; UPC 28400-00153) and GRANDMA’s Peanut Butter Mini Sandwich Crème Sandwich Cookies (1.71 oz pkgs; Sell by May 21, 2013 or earlier; UPC 28400-00901), due to the presence of undeclared milk and egg.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Spence & Co. Ltd. (Brockton, MA) recalls New York Style Nova Lox (Lot code 9720704), because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Two possible product-related illnesses have been reported. The recalled product was distributed through distributors in Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, Massachusetts and the Detroit (MI) area between 9.26.12 and 10.5.12, and also was distributed to the follwoing stores: Earthfare (AL, NC, GA, SC, TN, FL & OH between 9.28.12 and 10.5.12), Shaws Supermarkets (New England, on 9.28.12; expiration date 10.21.12), Roche Bros. (Massachusetts on 9.26.12; Expiration date 10.19.12), and Fresh Markets (FL, GA, KY, IL, AL, AZ, OH, TN, SC, VA, IN, MI, OK & KS).
  • Food Safety Recall: Black Earth Meat Market Inc. (Black Earth, WI) recalls Black Earth Meats Natural Beef Tongues and Black Earth Meats Local Beef Tongues (Various size cases; Est 34379; produced on October 8, 11, 17 and 18, 2012), because the tonsils may not have been removed completely. The recalled product was supplied to a restaurant in Wisconsin and a distributor in Illinois.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: Public health investigators from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services have determined that the petting zoo at the Cleveland County Fair was the initial source of exposure to E. coli that resulted in 106 illnesses and one death. Weather may have played a role in spreading the contamination to the area surrounding the petting zoo exhibit. One child died, and 105 other children and adults became ill as a result of the contamination at the petting zoo.
  • Food Safety Recall: Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese (Austin, KY) recalls several cheese products after routine testing finds Listeria monocytogenes in some samples: Colby, Colby Cheese (8oz, 5 lb, 10 lb, or 25 lb block, vacuum packed, Lot # 120724), Chipotle Colby, Flavored Colby Cheese (8 oz, 5 lb, 10 lb, or 25 lb block, vacuum packed, Lot #120711), Monterey Jack, Jack Cheese (8 oz, 5 lb, 10 lb, or 25 lb block, vacuum packed, Lot # 120719), and Mild Cheddar, Cheddar Cheese (8 oz, 5 lb, 10 lb, or 25 lb block, vacuum packed Lot # 120625). The recalled cheeses were distributed or sold beginning on September 20th, 2012 to locations in Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia to distributors, restaurants and farmer’s markets.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection has received reports of 25 additional cases of food poisoning associated with a restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui. Thirty-seven people have been affected so far. All are in stable condition.
