United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Jones’ Seasoning Blends LLC (University Place, WA) recalls Jones’ Mock Salt Original: Organic Salt Free Seasoning (1.6-oz bottles, 12-oz bags, and 16-oz bags) and Jones’ Mock Salt Spicy Southwest Blend: Organic Salt Free Seasoning (1.6-oz bottles), after the supplier of the celery seeds used in the Jones’ seasonings recalled their celery seeds due to possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled Jones’ products were distributed directly to grocery stores and markets in California, Minnesota and Washington, and were sold over the internet on the http://www.jonesmocksalt.com web site. The recall affects all products purchased from July 1, 2011 to December 14, 2011. (NOTE: This probably relates to the recall of celery seeds announced on December 14, 2011 by Starwest Botanicals)

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Earthly Goodness recalls Earthly Goodness Golden Apple Nut Free Organic Bar (47g; All codes), due to the presence of undeclared tree nuts. The recalled products were sold through retailer in Ontario.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Gunnar Dafgård Ab recalls Enebacken Kvalitet & Smak Meatballs (1kg pkgs; Best before 02/02/2012 and 03/02/2012), due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Lidl Denmark K/S recalls Freshona whole mushrooms (400g cans; Best before 31.12.2014), due to swelling of the cans, indicating possible bacterial growth due to inadequate heat treatment during manufacture.
  • Contact Lens Safety Recall (France): Johnson & Johnson Vision Care recalls Acuvue Oasys contact lenses (Lot #001RJ5, L001RJ8 and L001RJ9), due to a residual of diluent on the lenses that exceeds manufacturing standards. Consumers are urged to stop wearing the recalled lenses and to return them to the pharmacy for an exchange.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0113): Methidathion in honey pomeloes from China, via the Netherlands; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0114): Bulging cans containing Freshona brand whole mushrooms from Poland; distributed to Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.
  • Food Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.0115): Excessive vitamin D in vitamin D drops from Belgium; distributed to the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0116): Aflatoxins in raw milk from Hungary; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0121): Prohibited nitrofurazone in honey from New Zealand; distributed to the United Kingdom.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Gippsland Sprout Co. recalls Gippsland Sprout Co. Salad – Alfalfa, Onion and Mung Bean mix (120g plastic clam shell-shaped package; Use by 23 Jan), and Flowerdale Farm Alfalfa Salad Sprouts – Alfalfa, Onion and Mung Bean mix (120g plastic clam shell-shaped package; Use by 23 Jan0, due to contamination with E. coli. The recalled sprouts were distributed at the Melbourne Wholesale Fruit & Vegetable Market (Footscray), small grocery stores, and green grocers in Victoria only.

  • Outbreak Alert: Massachusetts Department of Public Health is investigating Twin Rivers Farm (Ashley Falls, MA) after a man may have been infected with brucellosis after having consumed unpasteurized milk produced at the dairy farm.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Tasty Enterprises recalls Tasty Enterprises brand Strawberry Powder, Green Apple Powder, Watermelon Powder, Guava Powder, Blueberry Powder, Banana Powder, Taro Powder, Mango Powder, Wheat & Malt Powder, Grape Powder, Sesame Powder, Egg Pudding Powder and Red Bean Powder (1-kg size), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled powders were distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutional customers in Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: Solly’s (Montreal, QC) recalls various Kettleman Bagel Co. brand cakes (600g; Banana cake, Carrot & Pineapple cake, Triple Chocolate cake, Banana Chocolate Chip cake, Blueberry Lemon cake, Lemon Poppy cake and Marble cake), due to the presence of undeclared milk, soy and sulphites,  Chocolate Homentashen (375g), due to undeclared milk and soy, and Prune, Apricot and Poppy varieties of Homentashen (375g), due to undeclared sulphites. The recalled baked goods were distributed in Ottawa, Ontario.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Ottawa Citizen reports that three flights from Cuba to Canada carried at least 39 passengers returning with a variety of gastrointestinal illnesses last week. The ill passengers were from at least four different resorts.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (France): Lidl recalls Freshona chez Lidl brand Champignons en boîte/Canned Mushrooms 1er choix entiers 400g, 1er choix émincés 400g, and 1er choix entiers 3 x 200g (Expiry 31.12.2014), because a production problem may have resulted in the finished product not having been sterilized.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG recalls Freshona Champignons I. Wahl Ganze Köpfe/Freshona 1st Choice Whole Canned Mushrooms (400g; Best before 31/12/2014), due to incomplete sterilization of the product.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Price Chopper recalls Price Chopper Coyote Joe’s Taco Cheese (16-oz; Expiration April 21, 2012), due to the potential presence of plastic fragments.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action: The Missouri Department of Agriculture has temporarily halted custom exempt processing operations at B & C Processing (Linn, MO) due to unsanitary practices. The exemption will remain suspended until completion of a satisfactory inspection.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: California Innovations Inc. (Toronto, Canada) recalls Expandable Insulated Lunch Box with Freezer Gel Pack, because gel that contains diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol can leak out of damaged freezer gel packs, posing a poisoning hazard if ingested. The company has received two separate reports of a dog chewing and ingesting gel from the gel pack. One of the two dogs died; the other has recovered. The recalled Lunch Boxes were manufactured in China and sold at Costco Wholesale Clubs, Leon Korol and Cost U Less stores between May 2007 and September 2008.
  • Food Safety Recall: Frisia Dairy & Creamery LLC (Tenino, WA) recalls retail raw milk products due to contamination with a toxin-producting E. coli, according to a report from My Fox Spokane.
  • Food Recall: Bi-Lo recalls La Feria Sabor Flour Tortillas (8-inch; 10-count; Item code 330640; Lot codes March 12 through March 25) and La Comadre Flour Tortillas (8-inch; 10-count; Item code 333230; Lot codes March 12 through March 25) for unspecified quality issues.
  • Outbreak Alert: Fifty-eight employees of a Zappos warehouse in Shepherdsville, Kentucky developed gastroenteritis after consuming catered food at work. Clinical specimens yielded cultures of Bacillus cereus.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Tasty Enterprises recalls its own brand of Honeydew Powder, Papaya Powder, Pineapple Powder, Lychee Powder, Coffee 2 in 1 Powder, Almond Powder, Coconut Powder, Peach Powder and Green Tea Powder (1kg; no lot codes; no UPC), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutions in Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: Dynamic Chocolates Inc. recalls House of Brussels Chocolates Hedgehogs – Filled with Creamy Hazelnut Truffle (4 x 230g; All codes; UPC 0 65082 05274 3), due to the presence of undeclared tree nuts. The recalled chocolates were distributed through retailers nationally.

  • Allergy Alert (UK): UK Snacks Ltd. recalls Giants ‘Just Fruit’ Mixed Dried Fruit (300g; Batch code D228; Best before end July 2012), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites.
  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Food Safety Authority of Ireland warns that Uno Pol Tarnow, Paleczki Kukurydziane”/‘Sweet Corn Fingers’ Crisps (70g; Best before date 31/03/2012; Batch 2012.03.31) may be unsafe for consumers who are allergic to gluten, because the specified batch contains undeclared gluten.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Defco A/S recalls Silk Cut Beef Pastrami/ Oksepastrami (80g; Package Date 09.01.2012; Best before 01.02.2012), after the remains of an aluminum clip were found in the product.
  • Food Safety Withdrawal (Denmark): Jan Import A/S withdraws Sun Island Pine Medium Pine Nuts (1kg; Best before 16.02.13/Lot #9604-1 and 9604-2; Best before 02.05.13/Lot #9813-1 and 9813-2), because the nuts may cause a temporary loss or change of taste in some consumers.
