United States

  • Pet Food Safety Recall: Diamond Pet Foods recalls Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Dog Lamb & Rice Formula Dry Food (samples, 6-lb bags and 18-lb bags; Manufactured Aug. 26, 2011; Production code DSL0801; Best before dates 26-Aug-2012, 27-Sept-2012 and 18-Oct-2012), because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed in Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin, and may have been sold nationally through on-line retailers or other pet food channels.
  • Allergy Alert: Foster Farms (Turlock, CA) recalls Foster Farms Ready to Cook, Boneless Mediterranean Style White Turkey Burgers (10-lb cases containing 30 x 5.33-oz burgers; Case code 96384; Julian date codes 1362, 2027, 2033, 2039, 2040, 2046, 2054, 2125, 2129, 2130, and 2131; Est no. P-157), because of misbranding and because the product contains a seasoning mix with undeclared hydrolyzed soy protein. The recalled burgers were produced on various dates between December 28, 2011 and May 10, 2012 and were sold for institutional use in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Foster Farms turkey burgers sold in grocery and club stores are not affected by this recall.
  • Allergy Alert: Santos Agency, Inc. recalls a number of Santos Brand products (various kinds of flours, legumes and spices; various package sizes; Distributed in California between May 2011 and May 2012), because the products may contain undeclared peanuts and wheat. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products.
  • Allergy Alert Update: USDA releases retail distribution information for Saffron Road Lamb Koftis entrées that were recalled by August Foods Inc on May 17, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Mazowsze Deli Inc. (Brooklyn, NY) recalls Vegetable Salad (1-lb uncoded clear plastic container; Sold from the deli’s retail location at 420 Church Avenue, Brooklyn), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall: River Ranch Fresh Foods, LLC (Salinas, CA) recalls various brands of retail and foodservice bagged salads (Best by code dates between 12MAY2012-22MAY2012 or Julian date codes between 116-125), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Retail brands include River Ranch, Farm Stand, Hy-Vee, Marketside, Shurfresh, and The Farmer’s Market. Foodservice brands include River Ranch, Cross Valley, Fresh n Easy, Promark and Sysco.   • Food Safety Recall: Caribe Produce LTD Co. (McAllen, TX) recalls Caribeña Brand Papaya Maradol (Product of Mexico), due to possible contamination with Salmonella. The recalled cases of Papaya Maradol were distributed in the Bronx, NY in wholesale stores and through retail stores from May 14, 2012 to May 17, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Lancaster Frozen Foods and G&W Incorporated recall approximately 7,000 pounds of ground beef products due to possible contamination with E. coli. The recalled products were produced between March 2nd and May 11th at Lancaster Frozen Foods and between March 2nd and April 12th at G&W, according to a report on Marler Blog.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: West Coast Nutritionals, Ltd. recalls all lots of Firminite, Extra Strength Instant Hot Rod, and Libidron Capsules (all package formats and sizes), after FDA lab analysis finds undeclared Tadalafil in a sample of Firminite. The recalled products may have been ordered online at http://www.firminite.com, http://www.instanthotrodextrastrength.com, http://www.libidron.com, or http://www.amazon.com, and were distributed to customers and retailers nationwide and worldwide.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency reports the recall of Gills Onions brand Fresh Diced Red Onions (198g packages; Product of USA; UPC 6 43550 00045 0; Best Before 05/17/2012; Lot code 51RDA1A2119), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product is known to be distributed in Ontario and may have been distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Sobeys Inc. recalls the following Compliements brand salads and prepared foods (Product of USA; Best before dates 12MA12 to 12MA22, inclusive/May 12 to 22, 2012), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products include: Compliments Garden Supreme (340g), Compliments Simply Romaine (454g), Compliments Harvest Romaine (284g), Compliments American Blend (340g), Compliments Coleslaw (454g), and Compliments Garden Salad (340g and 680g). The products were distributed nationally, except in the province of Quebec. In addition, in store produced products containing lettuce such as salads, sandwiches or wraps purchased prior to May 19, 2012 from IGA and Sobeys stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Sobeys, Price Chopper, or Foodland stores in Ontario should be discarded and not consumed. These clerk-served foods contain lettuce which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

United States

  • Allergy Alert: Bakery El Monte Sinai Corp. (Hempstead, NY) recalls Rainbow Cake (10-oz Styrofoam tray; Code date 7/8/12; UPC 5273500209), due to the presence of undeclared eggs. The recalled product was sold in Nassau, Suffolk, and New York counties in New York State.
  • Food Safety Recall: Raj Foods LLC (Houston, TX) recalls Raj Foods Halal Beef Samosa(s) (12 x 1-oz beef samosas per bag; Produced between Aug 9th and 23rd, 2011; Est 44163), because a meat ingredient used in the product may have been produced in a facility that is not federally inspected.
  • Food Safety Recall (via FDA Enforcement Report): Papayas & More LLC (Hidalgo, TX) recalls Papayas Delicious Fruit (Produce of Mexico; Lot #CH347; Codes 6909014, 6909914, and 6909318), because the papayas tested positive for Salmonella. The recalled fruit was produced by Empaque de Frutas Chulavista S.A. de C.V. (Tecoman, Mexico) and was distributed only to New York state. The recall was announced by letter on April 14, 2012.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Salmonella Bareilly outbreak attributed to a contaminated raw scraped tuna product imported from India has grown to 316 persons from 26 states and the District of Columbia. Thirty-seven of the outbreak victims have been hospitalized.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (South Carolina): The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has been unable to conclusively link a recent outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 and hemolytic uremic syndrome to a Spartanburg Mexican-style restaurant. Health officials identified the restaurant as the El Mexicano, and revealed that the facility scored an “A” rating on its two most recent inspections. The investigation is continuing.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Folie en Vrac (Montréal, QC) recalls Folie en Vrac salads and ready-to-eat dishes, due to the presence of undeclared pistachios and cashew nuts.
  • Outbreak Alert (Ontario): The Thunder Bay District Health Unit confirmed 89 cases of people suffering symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting and nausea after visiting This Old Barn on Oliver Road. A dozen were admitted to hospital. The health unit found E. coli in the well water used by the restaurant, according to a CBC report.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Delica recalls Grand-Mère Pâté (340g; Lot 138 919; Best before 7/6-2012; Product of Belgium) after bits of chicken bones were found in the pâté. The recalled product was distributed in Netto stores across Denmark.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a confirmed case of E. coli O157:H7 infection in a one-year old girl who experienced bloody diarrhea. There was no recent travel history.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Medical Device Safety Recall (Australia): Endeavour Industries Pty Ltd. recalls Endeavour Industries brand Quad (4 X Point) Walking Stick, because the product was manufactured using a grade or gauge of aluminum tube which is inadequate. Bending of the adjustable handle has been reported in some cases at less than the recommended user weight, and the product has faild government static loading (strength) testing.

United States

  • Food Safety Alert/Recall: The Hawai’i State Department of Health, Rhode Island Department of Health, Arkansas Department of Health, and Georgia Department of Agriculture warn the public that FDA has removed all Korean certified shippers from the Interstate Certified Shellfish Shippers List. All fresh and frozen shellfish from the Republic of Korea within the USA should be considered to be from an unapproved source and deemed to be adulterated. Consumers should discard all Korean fresh and frozen shellfish products, including clams, mussels and oysters. Canned products are not affected.
  • Food Safety Alert: Massachusetts health officials warn consumers that oysters harvested from Cape Cod Bay may be contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus a pathogen that may cause watery diarrhea, cramps, nausea, fever, chills, and vomiting.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: California Department of Public Health publishes a list of retail locations where recalled Organic Pastures raw milk products were sold.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns American Yeast Corporation Tennessee (Memphis, TN) that a January 2012 inspection of the company’s fresh baker’s yeast manufacturing plant revealed numerous insanitary conditions, which could cause the food products manufactured at the facility to be come adulterated.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns JC’s Fish and BBQ, Inc. (Knoxville, AR) that a February 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Scariano Brothers, LLC (Hammond, LA) that a January 2012 inspection of the company’s facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Vaughan Foods, Inc., dba Allison’s Gourmet Kitchen (Moore, OK) that a July-August 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for Foods.

Canada

  • Outbreak Alert Update: New Brunswick Public Health has confirmed 13 cases of E. coli o157:H7 illnesses out of 30 reported cases of bloody diarrhea. Most of the cases were reported in the Miramichi area, and the majority of confirmed outbreak victims reported eating at Jungle Jim’s restaurant in Miramichi in the days prior to developing symptoms. None of the food samples taken from Jungle Jim’s were found to contain E. coli o157:H7. The province, in cooperation with the Public Health Agency of Canada, is conducting a case control study in an effort to determine which food or foods may have been the source of the outbreak. Patrons of Jungle Jim’s who ate at the restaurant between April 23rd and 26, but who did not become ill, are asked to participate in this study by answering a detailed food questionnaire.   • Food Safety Alert (China): Police are investigating a batch of fake pigs’ ears that were discovered in a Ganzhou city market in late March. The “ears” were found to be made from a mixture of gelatin and sodium oleate, a common ingredient in soap. Pigs’ ears are a popular delicacy in China.
