  • Food Safety Withdrawal: Homestead Creamery (Jamesport, MO) withdraws Flory’s Favorite 60-day aged cheese made with raw milk (Packed on 210), after preliminary test results from the Missouri State Health Laboratory reveals that the cheese may be contaminated with shigatoxin-producing E. coli. The withdrawn batch of cheese was sold at the Homestead Creamery facility in Jamesport and may have been sold by HyVee (Liberty and Trenton, MO), Benedict Builders’ Farm (Knob Noster, MO) and Milton Creamery (Milton, IA).

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall Update (Scotland, UK): Snax 4 U expands its earlier recall to include all Snax 4 U (of Glasgow) products with a ‘use-by’ date of up to and including 15 January 2013, because the products were produced in premises served with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice (HEPN) due to food hygiene contraventions involving rodent infestation. The recalled products were supplied mainly to news agents and small independent convenience stores.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Wales, UK): BBC reports that the owner of Adonis Kebab House has been jailed for eight months following an August 2011 outbreak of E. coli illnesses that were linked to food that was purchased at the takeaway. Diar Wali Ali admitted to 23 food hygiene offences.

  • Food Safety Recall (Israel): Shamir Salads recalls Shamir brand Egg Salad (250g; All expiry dates up to and including 30.01.2013), due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): The Therapeutic Goods Administration warns Australians that Meizi Evolution Botanical Slimming soft gel capsules contain the undeclared prescription substance sibutramine, and should not be taken.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): The Therapeutic Goods Administration warns Australians that Best Slim capsules contain the undeclared prescription substance sibutramine, and should not be taken.

(Mississauga, ON) recalls Somersaults brand Cinnamon Crunch (Product of USA; 6 oz/170g and 2 oz/56g; UPC 8 98403 00227 7 and 8 98403 00228 4, respectively; Sell By 8/30/2013 or earlier), due to undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed nationally.
  • Allergy Alert: Kassler Food Products Inc. (Mississauga, ON) recalls Somersaults brand Cinnamon Crunch (0.5 oz/14g; Product of USA; UPC 8 98403 00224 6; Sell by 8/30/2013 or earlier), due to undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed nationally.
  • Allergy Alert: Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns individuals that Dymatize Nutrition brand Elite Gourmet Cookies & Cream Bar (85g; Product of USA; UPC 7 05016 99301 7; Best before MAY 2013 12072A) has been recalled by the Canadian importers, distributors and retailers due to undeclared peanuts. The recalled product was sold over the internet at sndcanada.com and may have been distributed through retail stores nationally. One allergic reaction has been reported.
  • Allergy Alert: Heidelberg Foods Ltd. (Est 644; St. Jacobs, ON) recalls Noah Martin’s Black Forest Salami (variable weight pkgs; sold up to and including January 11, 2013), due to undeclared mustard. Please refer to the recall notice for a list at the deli locations where this product was sold.
  • Food Safety Recall: Les Aliments Tousain Inc. recalls Dubon brand Snails From France – Very Large – 2 dozen (125g; UPC 0 60897 01545 7; Lot 72071 27.04.15), due to contamination with extraneous material (metal). The recalled product was supplied to retailers in Alberta, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec.
  • Outbreak Alert/Food Safety Recall: Freshpoint Toronto recalls 3/8″ Shred Iceberg/Romaine Blend (70/30), packaged for use by KFC  (6 x 2 lb; UPC 10883278082124; Lot codes 4941, 5011, 5021, 5031, 5041, 5051, 5121, 5131, 5141, 5151, 5231) and 1/4″ Shred Iceberg Lettuce, packaged for use by Taco Bell (10 x 2 lb; UPC 10883278070701; Lot codes 4941, 5011, 5021, 5031, 5041, 5051, 5111, 5121, 5131, 5141, 5151) due to contamination with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled lettuce products were supplied to KFC and Taco Bell respectively in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec and have been linked to 26 confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in Nova Scotia (10), New Brunswick (6) and Ontario (10). Eleven outbreak victims have been hospitalized, and one person has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome. Victims, who include 14 males and 12 females, range in age from two to 83 years.

  • Allergy Alert: Gilster-Mary Lee Corp. (Chester, IL) recalls Food Club brand Chocolate Chunk Brownie Mix (12 x 14.25-oz cartons/case; Best by NOV 28 13 D02; UPC 36800-13486), because the product contains undeclared walnuts. The recalled Brownie Mix was distributed to an Abingdon, VA warehouse on December 5, 2012.

Canada

  • Outbreak Alert (New Brunswick): The province’s Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health is investigating five confirmed cases of E. coli O157, including two reported in the Saint John region and three in the Fredericton region. All five victims were seen in hospital emergency rooms; one person was admitted to hospital. It is not yet known whether all five cases have a common source, or whether they may be linked to several recent cases in neighboring Nova Scotia.
  • Outbreak Alert (British Columbia): An outbreak of norovirus gastroenteritis prompted the shut-down of an entire floor of Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminister; one ward is expected to reopen today, according to CBC. A ward at Vancouver General Hospital remains “under containment” due to a separate outbreak of norovirus infections.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): The recent recall of Koon Yick Wah Kee brand fermented bean curd products due to contamination with Bacillus cereus has been extended to include all of the following: Tofu in sesame oil (450g glass jar; Best before 30/12/2014, 30/06/2014 and 30/09/2014) and Tofu in sesame oil and peppers (450g glass jar; Best before 30/12/2014, 30/06/2014 and 30/09/2014). The recalled products were sold in Asian specialty stores from August 2012 to December 2012, inclusive.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Fromagerie de Jussac (France) recalls an extensive list of cheeses made from cow’s milk, goat milk and sheep milk (packaging includes 200g and 3 x 60g sizes), due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination.   • Food Safety Notification Update (EU #2012.1774): Listeria monocytogenes in various Fromagerie de Jussac cheeses from France; distributed to Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0002): Presence of poisonous mushrooms in dried black morels from the Czech Republic; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0004): Carbendazim in oranges from South Africa; distributed to France.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0007): Salmonella in dried pet food for dogs from India; distributed to Germany and Luxembourg.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0008): Ethephon in cherry tomatoes from Italy; distributed to Germany.

  • Chinese Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Hang Lung Trading Co. recalls the Chinese herbal medicine known as Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii (Batch #210035; Imported from Mainland), because it was found to be contaminated by solanaceous alkaloids.
