United States

  • Allergy Alert: Flowers Foods recalls Mrs. Freshley’s Canadian Label Apple Cinnamon Fruit and Pastry Cereal Bars, Mrs. Freshley’s Canadian Label Blueberry Fruit and Pastry Cereal Bars, and Mrs. Freshley’s Canadian Label Strawberry Fruit and Pastry Cereal Bars, because the cereal bars may contain undeclared milk. The recalled bars were sold in discount stores nationwide in dual-language (French/English) multipack cartons.
  • Food Safety Recall: Thumb Oilseed Producer’s Cooperative (Ubly, MI) recalls the following soybean flour and soy meal (used to manufacture human and animal food), due to Salmonella contamination: Nex Soy (40-lb bags; Lot Nos. TF112310 through TF033011), Soy Beginnings (40-lb bags; Product Code 285100-NFB; Lot numbers TF112310 thru TF033011), Soy Beginnings (1500-lb polyurethane totes; Product Code 285100-NFT, Lot numbers TF112310 thru TF082311), and soy meal (0.08-ton loads after custom processing; Lot Nos. O011711 through O081711). The recalled soy products were distributed to a “limited group” of wholesale customers in Illinois, Vermont, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Canada in November 2010 through September 2011. The recall is the result of routine sampling conducted by the company and FDA, which found Salmonella both in finished product and in the manufacturing environment.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for beef products recalled by Manning Beef, LLC due to E. coli O157:H7 contamination.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Superior Metabolic Technologies, Inc. (Marietta, GA) recalls Uprizing 2.0 testosterone booster (black plastic bottle containing 90 capsules; all lots), because tests have shown the product to contain superdrol, a synthetic steroid banned by FDA. Uprizing 2.0 was sold through retail health food stores in Alabama, Arizona, California, Georgia, Mississippi, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Texas.
  • Food Safety Alert: Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) has embargoed retail meat products sold by Reis Meat Processing (Jackson, MO), after routine inspection revealed sanitation concerns. DHSS has begun testing on retail meat products processed and packaged by Reis.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Flowers Foods (Thomasville, GA) recalls the following Mrs. Freshley’s brand multipack Cereal Bars labelled for the Canadian market, because the products may contain undeclared milk: Apple Cinnamon Fruit & Pastry Cereal Bars (170g (6 x 28g); Blueberry Fruit & Pastry Cereal Bars (170g; 6 x 28g) and Strawberry Fruit & Pastry Cereal Bars (170g (6 x 28g). The recalled cereal bars were distributed in Ontario and Quebec, and may have been distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Gagan Foods International Ltd. (Delta, BC) recalls Gagan Coriander Powder (100g, 200g, 400g & 1 kg sizes; Product of India; Batch No. RSLI/09-10/DG-13), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled coriander powder was distributed in Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Lindt and Sprüngli (UK) Ltd. withdraws Lindt Lindor White Chocolate Truffles (200g; batch numbers: L4711, L2681, L2621 and L3691; best before dates: 31/07/2012 and 31/08/2012), because the product may contain traces of  undeclared hazelnuts and almonds.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Ardo A/S recalls Frozen Whole Raspberries (375g; Package date 25.12.2010; Best before 25.12.2012), because the berries may be contaminated with Norovirus.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Danfrugt Skaelskor A/S recalls Pure Bites Apples and Pure Bites Pears (100g bags; Lot #265; Best before 7 October 2011), because the fruit may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1359): Salmonella spp. in salami from Germany; distributed to Germany.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1360): Traces of wheat in oat flakes used in oats and muesli from the Netherlands, with raw material from Sweden, via the United Kingdom; distributed to the Netherlands and the Untied Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1361): Foodborne outbreak suspected (scombroid syndrome) to be caused by chilled tuna fillets from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1362): Undeclared hazelnut and almond in white chocolate truffles from Italy; distributed to Ireland and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1364): Salmonella in chilled smoked salmon from France; distributed to Italy.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Prolab Nutrition Inc. (Chatsworth, CA) and Canadian importers recall several PROLAB® brand protein products, because the products may contain undeclared milk and/or wheat gluten. The recalled protein products were imported from the USA and sold in Ontario – and possibly nationally – by retail stores, mail order and direct delivery.   • Food Safety Alert: The BC Centre for Disease Control is advising the public that products made by Chilcotin Harvest and distributed in the Williams Lake area, and sold from the Ethical Kitchen restaurant in North Vancouver should not be consumed, due to safety issues with the company’s processing practices that present a risk of Clostridium botulinum or E. coli in the meat products. Please refer to the BC CDC notice for a complete list of affected products, which were sold in individual retail packages.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Lindt and Sprüngli withdraws Lindt Lindor White Chocolate Truffles, 200g (Batch numbers L4711, L2681, L2621 and L3691; Best before 31 July 2012 and 31 August 2012), because the products may contain traces of undeclared hazelnut and almonds.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): Distributors of Casino, Dia, Irma, Le Mutant, Monoprix, Norma, Parot, and Selecto brands of Sparkling Mineral Water/Eau Minérale Gazeuse, 125cl (Best before 09-12; Lot #L244-11, L256-11 and L259-11), because the contents may contain small pieces of glass.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Defco A/S recalls Silk Cut Fried Chicken (110g; Package date 6/9/2011; Expiry 29/9/2011), because the product is contaminated with high levels of Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Medical Device Safety Recall (Italy): CooperVision Inc. recalls Avaira™ Toric contact lenses, because some lenses may have a residue. This is part of a multi-country recall, which was initiated by the company in August 2011.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1340): Listeria monocytogenes in frozen roast beef from Ireland; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1341): Salmonella typhimurium in dog chews from Germany; distributed to Austria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1342): Insect infestation of mackerel fillets in olive oil from Morocco; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1343): Listeria monocytogenes in smoked salmon from Denmark; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1344): Mercury in frozen swordfish from South Korea; distributed to France, Italy and Spain.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1345): Ochratoxin A in ground dried chili dispatched from the Netherlands; distributed to Ireland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1346): Unauthorized lincomycin in honey from China; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1347): Norovirus in frozen fruit mix from Belgium; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1348): Mold growth in cheese spread from France; distributed to Malta.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (India): Twenty-three people from Karadikkal village in Tamil Nadu were admitted to hospital with suspected food poisoning after eating fish caught in a local tank.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Manning Beef LLC (Pico Rivera, CA) recalls BroPack Inc. Beef Manufacturing Trimmings (Combo bins; “65/35, 50/50 or 85/15” produced on Sept. 23, 2011), Paso Prime Beef Manufacturing Trimmings (Combo bins; “65/35, 50/50 or 85/15” produced on Sept. 23, 2011) and primal cuts, subprimal cuts and boxed beef (30 and 60 lb. boxes; produced Sept 23, 2011), because the beef may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recall was triggered by “…an unusually high number of confirmed positive E. coli O157:H7 test results conducted by the establishment on the manufacturing trimmings.” The recalled beef was shipped to retail establishments and food service centers in Ariz. and Calif. and to another federally regulated establishment in Nebraska.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Georgia Division of Epidemiology is investigating an outbreak of Cyclospora gastroenteritis that may be linked to the consumption of catered food supplied by Wolfgang Puck at the Georgia Aquarium over the summer. More than 100 guests and staff at the Aquarium have developed week-long bouts of diarrhea during the summer.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Importers recall Chongga Kimchi Richi, 80g, Daesang FNF Corporation Gat Kimchi, 500g and Daesang FNF Corporation Godulbbaegi, 200g, due to the presence of undeclared fish, shrimp, sesame or nuts (depending on the product. All of the recalled kimchi products were imported from Korea, and may have been distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Northern Lights Produce Network Ltd. (Edmonton, AB) recalls True Leaf Farms brand Chopped Romaine Lettuce (Product of USA; 6 x 2-lb bags; MFC codes A256-46452-8, B256-46454-8, and B256-46438-8; Best before 09/29/11), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled Romaine lettuce was distributed to food service accounts in Calgary and Edmonton.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fumoir Grizzly (St-Augustin, QC) recalls Grizzly Smoked Coho Salmon, sliced (70g packages; Lot codes 20890115 and 20890125), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled smoked salmon was distributed in Quebec.

  • Food Safety Alert (Taiwan): Health authorities report that raw oysters recalled in the USA due to possible contamination with Vibrio parahaemolyticus were imported into Taiwan and sold to restaurants.. These oysters probably already have been consumed.
