United States

  • Food Safety Alert/Outbreak Alert (New Jersey): The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services has issued a public warning after a pregnant woman was diagnosed with Listeria monocytogenes and analysis confirmed the presence of L. monocytogenes in a sample of Los Corrales Queso Fresco Fresh Cheese and Banana Leaf (14 oz; Manufactured by El Ranchero del Sur, LLC (South River, NJ); Plant number 34-0013669; Code date 03/16/12). The company has closed pending federal and state investigation of the facilities, and has agreed to recall all of its cheese products. Affected products include cheeses sold under the brand names El Rancero, Los Corrales, and Carnes Don Beto. They are sold mainly in Mexican and Latin American grocery stores, restaurants and other hispanic food establishments.
  • Outbreak Alert: Forty students and ten chaperones from a Kansas high school were treated for food poisoning at Excela Frick Hospital in Mount Pleasant, PA on their way back from a band trip to new York.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: PK Trading Inc. (Mississauga, ON) recalls Frito Lay brand Cheetos BBQ Flavor (88g; Red bag; UPC 8 801062 289936; Product of Korea) and Frito Lay brand Cheetos Hot Flavor (88g; Black bag; UPC 8 801062 380015; Product of Korea), due to the presence of undeclared milk and soy, respectively. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario and Manitoba.
  • Allergy Alert: Canadian T & J International Development Inc. (Richmond, BC) recalls Natural World brand Dried Fungus products (80g and 200g; UPC 6 948691 100064 and 6 948691 100071, respectively), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled products were distributed in British Columbia.
  • Allergy Alert: Quality Natural Foods Ltd. recalls Haldiram’s Indian Snacks All In One (150g and 350g sizes; All packages), due to the presence of undeclared sesame seeds. The recalled products were distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: New Food Classics expands its earlier series of recalls to include Best Value 10 Beef Burgers (1kg; UPC 0 71212 88103 8; Lot codes 72991 EST 761, and 82991 Est 761) and Best Value 20 Beef Burgers (2kg; UPC 0 71212 88104 5; Lot codes 53011 EST 761, 63011 EST 761, 73011 EST 761, and 83011 EST 761), because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled products were distributed to Giant Tiger and Northern Canada retail stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. One reported illness has been associated with consumption of these products.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): The Food Safety Authority of Ireland advises the public that Marshmallow Arsenal Pitche Moloko Vanilla (600g pkg; Product of Poland; Best before 03.05.2012) contains peanuts that were not declared on the label.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Heuschen & Schrouff OFT BV recall Tofu mit Chili eingelegt/Tofu in chili marinade (300g pkg; Best before 30/06/2013), due to elevated levels of Bacillus cereus contamination.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): Laboratoire Bayer Santé Familiale recalls Ultraproct and Deliproct rectal ointments (10g tubes; Ultraproct Lot Nos. 02093B, 04102A and 13114B; Deliproct Lot Nos. 02109B, 03134C, 12167B, 13174B and 14184C), due to an increase in the concentration of a breakdown product of cinchocaine chlorhydrate.
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Twenty-two guests and staff members at the Scarisbrick Hotel (Southport) were stricken with gastrointestinal symptoms that are believed to be due to a norovirus infection.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Saudi Arabia): Thirteen students were treated at Scion General Hospital for symptoms of food poisoning after sharing a breakfast supplied by a physical education teacher in celebration of their victory in a sport tournament.

  • Food Recall Update: Price Chopper rescinds its earlier recall of all varieties of Home Style Gravy. Price Chopper recalls Price Chopper Home Style Beef Gravy (12 oz; UPC 41735-16509), because the product did not meet quality standards. All other varieties of Home Style Gravy are unaffected. 
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Staples, Incorporated (Framingham, MA) that an October/November 2011 inspection of the company’s Stockton, California facility documented serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Fong Kee Tofu Company, Inc. (San Francisco, CA) that a December 2011 inspection of the company’s food manufacturing facility documented serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Modern Products, Inc. (Mequon, WI) that an August/September 2011 inspection of the company’s facility revealed a failure to comply with the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for dietary supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Creekside Springs, LLC (Salineville, OH) that a June/July 2011 inspection of the company’s bottled water processing facility determined that the company is processing bottled water which you label as spring, drinking, and distilled water in violation of the Processing and Bottling of Bottled Drinking Water Regulation.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall Update: New Food Classics expands its earlier recalls of beef products to include no name 12 Beef Burgers (1.36 kg; UPC 0 60383 37333 7; Lot Code of BB 2012 AL 22 EST 761) and no name Club Pack Beef Steakettes (2.27 kg; UPC 0 60383 01321 9; Lot Code of BB 2012 AL 22 EST 761), because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled products were distributed nationally by Loblaws. There has been one reported illness associated with the consumption of the New Food Classics products.

Europe

  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Spain): Lapis Lazuli España Optical Services S.L. recalls Eye See All In One Solution + Hyaluronate contact lens solution (Manufactured by Lapis Lazuli International NV; Lot 109077), due to reports of problems with irritation, red eye, and conjunctivitis.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0379): Excess amount of Ponceau 4R/cochineal red A in sugared almonds from Belgium; distributed to Belgium and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0380): Methomyl in strawberries from Egypt; distributed to the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0382): Deoxynivalenol in oats from Sweden; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0384): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled monkfish from France; distributed to Italy.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Pacific Organics recalls GF Harvest Old Fashioned Rolled Oats, Gluten-Free (1.16 kg packet; Best before AUG 2012; Product of USA), due to non-compliant labelling. The recalled product was distributed in health food shops and bakeries in New South Wales.
  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Goodman Fielder New Zealand Ltd. recalls Deli Kitchen Sandwiches Gourmet Farmhouse Flavour (167g pre-packaged sandwiches; Best before 13/03/12 and 15/03/12), because one of the sandwich ingredients may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled sandwiches were sold in service stations and some corner stores and mini-marts throughout the North Island.

  • Food Safety Recall: Tyson Prepared Foods, Inc. (South Hutchinson, KS) recalls Arrezzio-Cooked Beef Pizza Topping Manzo Cotto Per Pizza (2 x 5-lb pkgs per 10-lb carton labeled as “Cooked Pizza Topping”; Produced Jan 12, 2012; Est. 623), due to the presence of undeclared pork. The recalled product was sold to foodservice institutions nationwide via a distributor; it was not sold in retail grocery stores.
  • Food Recall: Lowes Foods recalls Gold Peak Sweetened Black Tea (UPC8390000645; Lot code APR 1312 AM 7 G ONLY), because the product does not meet quality standards.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Blossom Enterprises LLC dba Sea Blossom Seafoods (Olympia, WA) that a November 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Ming’s Food, Inc. (Chamblee, GA) that a May/June 2011 inspection of the company’s food warehouse and processing facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Breathable Foods, Inc. (Cambridge, MA) that a February 2012 review of the company’s website (www.aeroshots.com) determined that the product AeroShot is misbranded, in that the labeling of this product is false or misleading.
  • Consumer Product Safety Alert: FDA warns consumers not to use skin creams, beauty and antiseptic soaps or lotions that may contain mercury. The products are marketed as skin lighteners and anti-aging treatments that remove age spots, freckles, blemishes and wrinkles, according to a alert issued today by FDA.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert (Update): Perestroika Products Ltd. (Burnaby, BC) recalls Red Square brand Real Deal Energy Cookies – Oatmeal, Flax & Raisin (650g pkg containing 8 bars; Lot codes 35520.11 and 36120.11), because the product contains undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed through London Drugs stores in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
  • Food Safety Recall: T. Lauzon Ltée recalls T. Lauzon Ltée Lean Ground Veal (2.5 kg; Code 343-11), due to contamination with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled ground veal was distributed to hotels, restaurants and/or institutions in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: New Food Classics recalls unbranded Beef Burger – Classic (13.8kg pkgs; Prod Date 11 OC 12; Item 55240; Est 761), due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled product was distributed to hotels, restaurants and/or institutions in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
  • Food Safety Recall: Choi Kee (North Kee Trading) recalls AA Meat Honeycomb Beef Tripe (22 lb; Produced between January 11, 2011 and February 8, 2012), AA Meat Duck Feet (40 lb; Produced between April 7, 2011 and February 8, 2012), AA Meat Beef Omasum Tripe (22 lb; Produced between January 11, 2011 and February 8, 2012), AA Meat Chicken Feet (40 lb; Produced between April 7, 2011 and February 8, 2012), and AA Meat Pork Uteri (40 lb; Produced between April 7, 2011 and February 8, 2012). The recalled meats were imported from the USA, where they were recalled by AA Meat Products Corporation (Maywood, CA) due to having been processed without the benefit of federal inspection. The recalled products were distributed to retailers, hotels, restaurants and institutions in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

  • Allergy Alert (New Zealand): Oriental Merchant Pty Ltd. recalls Crown Pie Chocolate Pie with Marshmallow Cream Biscuits (180 g carton containing 8 biscuits; All batches; Product of Korea), because the product contains undeclared egg. The recalled biscuits were sold in all leading supermarkets, Asian stores and independent retail outlets throughout New Zealand.
