United States

  • Allergy Alert: Wayne Farms (Decatur, AL) recalls frozen, breaded, fully cooked Italian-style chicken breast fillet products, because they contain undeclared egg. The recalled products were produced between August 3, 2010 and November 13, 2010 and were shipped – unbranded and under the “The Deli Best” and “Dutch Quality House” brands – for foodservice use nationwide and to distribution centers in New Jersey and Massachusetts.
  • Allergy Alert: Cottage Grove Farmhouse Bakery (Cottage Grove, OR) recalls Wheat Sourdough Bread (Pull dates 03-31, 04-02 and 04-05), Oatmeal Bread (Pull date 03-31), and Garlic Basil Parmesan Bread (Pull date 03-31) because they may contain undeclared pasteurized egg white.
  • Allergy Alert: Sassy Cow Creamery, LLC (Columbus, WI) recalls Blueberry Cheesecake and Butter Pecan Ice Cream (qt. and half-gallon cartons; Best by 9/17/11 or earlier) because it may contain undeclared peanuts or egg and soy. The recalled ice cream was distributed in retail stores in Wisconsin and Illinois.
  • Food Safety Recall: Frankly Fresh, Inc. (Carson, CA) recalls its seafood line of products, because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was distributed in California and Nevada through retail supermarkets. Some of the recalled items were sold under the Cedar Lane and Frankly Fresh labels in Food4Less stores, and under the Frankly Fresh label in Ralphs stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: Arko Foods International (Los Angeles, CA) recalls Angelina Brand Smoked Roundscad, 8oz packs, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled product was distributed in California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, New York, Texas, Maryland, and Florida through retail stores, supermarkets, and wholesale distributors.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fresh Express recalls Bag Spinach, 9 oz. (Product codes starting with H081 and H082; Use-by dates of April 6 and April 7), due to a positive Salmonella result from random sample testing. The recalled spinach was distributed in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Ohio and Maine, with possible redistribution in New Jersey, Virginia, Delaware, Vermont, New Hampshire, West Virginia and DC.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Jennie-O Turkey Store (Willmar, MN) recalls approximately 54,960 pounds of frozen, raw turkey burger products (Use by DEC 23 2011; Lot codes 32710 through 32780) that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products consist of 4-pound boxes of Jennie-O Turkey Store® “All Natural Turkey Burgers with seasonings Lean White Meat”. Each box contains 12 1/3-pound individually wrapped burgers. CDC reports that 12 people in 10 states have been infected with a multiple antibiotic-resistant strain of Salmonella Hadar after consuming turkey burgers. At least three of the outbreak victims reported eating Jennie-O Turkey burgers the week before their illness began. Samples of the implicated burgers were recovered from the homes of two infected individuals; both samples were positive for the outbreak strain. Jennie-O Turkey Store burgers were available in Sam’s Club nationwide.
  • Health Supplement Safety Recall: AVNS Inc. recalls THE BEST Enhancement Supplement after being informed by the manufacturer (Drive Total Energy) that FDA lab analysis detected undeclared Sulfosildenafil, an analogue of Sildenafil, in a sample of the product. Sildenafil is an FDA-approved drug used in the treatment of male Erectile Dysfunction and may cause serious side effects.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Rhode Island Department of Health recalls all baked goods from DeFusco’s Bakery in Johnston, RI. Please see the recall notice for a complete list of food establishments that purchased baked goods from DeFusco’s. As of April 5, 2011, zeppole pastries from DeFusco have been linked to 61 cases of Salmonella illness (60 in Rhode Island and 1 in Massachusetts); 27 victims were hospitalized (5 remain in hospital). Thirty-one of the illness cases were lab-confirmed Salmonella infections. An inspection of DeFusco’s conducted on March 25, 2011 by Rhode Island’s Office of Food Protection revealed numerous Violations of Code, including the storage of ready-to-eat baked pastry shells in boxes that had been used to store raw shell eggs, and improper storage temperature of perishable products.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Van de Water Raymond Ltée recalls Milupa Oatmeal Cereal – Apples, 227g (all lots where the label bears a “Gluten Free” claim), due to the presence of undeclared gluten. The recalled product was distributed through retailers nationally.
  • Allergy Alert: Brandfusion Ltd. recalls “Krazy!” for Kernels Extraordinary Popcorn Sassy Salt & Vinegar seasoning (110g packages; all lot codes), due to the presence of undeclared milk protein. The recalled product was distributed nationally.
  • Allergy Alert: Cuisine V.M. Inc. recalls various ready-to-eat sandwiches, subs and tortillas (best before dates up to and including April 7, 2011), due to the presence of undeclared egg, milk, soy, sesame seeds, wheat, fish and/or sulphites.
  • Allergy Alert: Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning people with allergies to peanuts not to consume the Doctor’s CarbRite Diet Chocolate Brownie bars (56.7g; Code EXP101211), due to the presence of undeclared peanuts. The product may have been distributed nationally.
  • Allergy Alert: Health Canada warns that two probiotic natural health products – Friendly Flora and Healthy Skin With Greens+ – contain undeclared trace amounts of milk from ingredients used in the production process.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Amira Enterprises Inc. recalls certain bulk and prepackaged raw shelled walnut products (all Best Before dates; all lot codes), because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled products include raw shelled walnuts sold from a bulk bin, prepackaged raw shelled walnuts (Amira, Tia and Merit Selection brands), Mistral Mix containing walnuts (Amira and Tia brands) and Salad booster containing walnuts (Amira and Tia brands). The recalled walnuts were imported from the USA and may have originated in California (see Amira web site). Thirteen people in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick have contracted E. coli o157:H7 infections after consuming raw shelled walnuts. Nine victims were hospitalized and two of them developed hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Semper AB recalls Småfolk Majspuffar (15g; All Best Before dates), because the product may contain undeclared traces of celery.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Sainsbury’s withdraws Freefrom Chocolate Sponge Pudding (Best before 13 April 2011), because the product contains low levels of undeclared milk protein.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Newdan Food Trading Ltd. recalls X-tra neutral marinated chicken breast fillets with added 13% brine (Product of Germany; Expiry date: 12/4-2011), due to possible contamination with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): Joyce’s Irish Lean Country Bacon Ltd. recalls Joyce’s Fresh ‘N Tasty Traditional Home Cooked Ham, 300g packs (Batch codes 143 and 156; use-by date: 25.04.11) due to a possible inappropriate use- by date and risk of microbial cross-contamination during packing.
  • Food Recall (France): Kerlys recalls Saint Eloi chez Intermarché cans of Céleri Râpé Assaisonné (grated, seasoned celery), due to a packaging defect that may result in perforation of the can and subsequent product contamination and spoilage.
  • Food Recall (Denmark): Stryhns A/S recalls certain liver pâtés, due to lack of manufactur and expiry date stamps.
  • Food Safety Alert (Belgium): The Federal Food Safety Agency (AFSCA) notifies consumers of the temporary closure of a food distribution facility at Jodoigne, due to improper storage of food products (including improper storage temperatures).
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Sweden): The National Food Administration warns that the dietary supplement Redux Retinalin, 500 mg, has been shown to contain high levels of B vitamin nicotinic acid. Several adverse reactions have been reported.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall (France): Simnex recalls bottles of Soap Bubble Liquid (Product of China; Reference #6528), due to contamination with bacteria.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating the complaint of a woman who developed throat pain and vomiting immediately after drinking a bottle of distilled water bought from a petrol station. Preliminary lab analysis showed the presence of sodium hydroxide.
  • Food Safety Enforcement (PRC): Nearly one-half of Chinese dairies inspected in a government safety audit have been ordered to stop production. The closures affect producers that account for about 10% of the market.
  • Food Safety Alert (Singapore): The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore has suspended the import of fruits and vegetables from Japan’s Hyogo prefecture, after detecting radioactive contaminants in a sample of cabbage.
  • Food Safety Alert (Korea): Korea has suspended the importation of Japanese agricultural products from Chiba, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochiki and Gunma prefectures due to possible contamination with radioactive materials.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Alert (Australia): South Australia Health warns the public about the dangers of picking and eating wild mushroom, after Death Cap mushrooms (Amanita phalloides) were found in the Adelaide Hills.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Australia): JT Publishing Pty Ltd recalls Chao Jimengnan ‘SuperPowerful Man’ tablets (all batches), because the product contains the prescription-only ingredients sulfosildenafil and tadalafil.

  • Allergy Alert: Old World Meats (Duluth, MN) recalls approximately 83 pounds of individually packaged hot and teriyaki-flavored red meat jerky products because they contain soy, wheat and milk that are not noted on the label.
  • Allergy Alert: Monogram Meat Snacks, LLC (Chandler, MN) recalls approximately 5,125 pounds of Hannah’s Honey Cured Turkey Sticks because they contain undeclared wheat.
  • Allergy Alert: Yamaya USA, Inc. (Torrance, CA) recalls approximately 612 pounds of pork loin cutlet fritter products because they contain monosodium glutamate (MSG) which is not declared on the label.
  • Allergy Alert: Faribault Foods, Inc. (Faribault, MN) recalls Field Day Organic Garbanzo Beans because some cans with this label may contain Minestrone soup. The Minestrone soup contains wheat, milk, soy and egg, which are not listed on the label of the mis-identified product.
  • Food Safety Recall: Vitalabs, Inc. (Jonesboro, GA) recalls Vanilla Whey Isolate (Lot #3473 and 0131), Chocolate Whey Isolate (Lot #3477) and Strawberry Whey Isolate (Lot #3364) due to possible Salmonella contamination. The affected products were offered under the following brand names: Donne Hale’s, Dr. Bill’s Choice, HCG Buy Direct, The Healthy Way, Innovative Nutra Labs Nutrapure, Iron Mag Labs, Len Rossi’s, Lifestyle Perfect Protein, Nature’s Pantry, Northeast Ohio Endocrinology, Nutrition World Ultra, Peachtree Natural Foods, Sharp Labs G Booster Plus, SouthFit Supplements, Susan’s Essential Formulas, Team Kattouf, This Is Bio Shape Shake, Trainer’s Choice, Unlimited Nutrition Athletic Protein, Vitalabs Inc. Ultra, X3 Nutrition X3, and YourHCG.Com.
  • Food Safety Recall: Nestle Prepared Foods Company (Gaffney, SC) recalls approximately 10,260 pounds of frozen spaghetti and meatball entrees that may contain foreign materials. The products were packaged on Oct. 25, 2010, and shipped to distributors and retail stores east of the Rocky Mountains.
  • Food Safety Recall: Oak Farms Dairy (Waco, TX) recalls half-gallon plastic bottles of whole chocolate milk, half-pint paper cartons of whole chocolate milk, and half-pint paper cartons of 1% chocolate milk due to the presence of Alkaline Phosphatase found in samples during routine testing.
  • Food Safety Recall: Pierre Foods recalls Pierre™ pb jamwich crustless peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches, because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The sandwiches were distributed to Giant-Carlisle stores in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
  • Food Safety Recall: D&M Smoked Fish, Inc. (Queens, NY) recalls Haifa brand Schmaltz Herring (Lot #51) and Cold Smoked Sprats (Lot #54), because the products were found to be uneviscerated. The sale of uneviscerated fish is prohibited in New York State due to the heightened risk of Clostridium botulinum spores.
  • Food Safety Recall: ONE World Enterprises, LLC recalls O.N.E. Coconut Water, (11.2 oz Tetra Pak cartons; Lot code 12E1004; UPC # 894991001104; Sell-by date of May 1, 2011), due to the potential oxidation of the product that may permit the growth of mold. The affected product was distributed to various retail outlets in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, New York, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Sea-Ray Seafood Inc. (St-Laurent, QC) recalls Lightly Breaded and Seasoned Calamari (908g packages; Plant 3700/02925; Production 283/10; Lot No. 10101010040H4. The recalled product was distributed in Québec.
  • Allergy Alert: Transhing Investment Inc. recalls Sriracha Chili Sauce (794g; Code TS12-16-08EXP2011/B; EXP DEC-16-2011) due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: Thrifty Foods (Broadmead) recalls Thrifty Foods “GREEK JUMBO OLIVES STUFFED W/ GARLIC” (PACKAGE CONTAINS GREEK OLIVES STUFFED W/ ALMOND), due to the presence of undeclared nuts. The recalled product was distributed in British Columbia.
  • Allergy Alert: Sobeys Inc. recalls Compliments Sensations Uncooked Butterfly Breaded Shrimp (340g; Best before 2011 NO 30) due to the presence of undeclared coconut. The recalled product was distributed to New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec.
  • Allergy Alert: Metro Richelieu inc. recalls various products due to the presence of undeclared soy, wheat, egg, peanuts, nuts and/or sesame seeds.
  • Food Safety Recall: Vitalabs, Inc. (Jonesboro, GA) recalls Vanilla Whey Isolate (Lot #3473 and 0131), Chocolate Whey Isolate (Lot #3477) and Strawberry Whey Isolate (Lot #3364) due to possible Salmonella contamination.   • Food Safety Recall (Expanded): David’s Tea (Montreal, QC) recalls Peppermint Amour (Organic) Herb Tea, and Organic Peppermint Amour, because the herbal tea may be contaminated with Salmonella. The affected teas have been recalled in the USA by Aromatics Inc. and were distributed nationally in Canada.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC recalls Morrisons Cocktail Prawns (95g; Use by 16 March 2011) due to the presence of undeclared fish, gluten, mollusc and soy.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): Saupiquet recalls Saupiquet Sardines in Extra-Virgin Olive Oil (Lot #MA1653), due to the presence of histamine.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Chinese Herbal Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): The Department of Health warns the public not to take the Chinese herb labeled as Flos Campsis, purchased from Fu Hong Medicine Co., because the herb may actually be the toxic herb Flos Daturae Metelis.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Lumsden Health Products recalls The Latin Seed Weight Loss Product (Product of Brazil; all best before dates), due to incorrect labeling. The packages may contain the poisonous seed of Yellow Oleander instead of candlenuts. The recalled product was imported from Bolivia and distributed across Australia.

United States

Allergy Alert: McCormick & Company, Incorporated recalls Golden Dipt® Tempura Seafood Batter Mix 8 OZ, with UPC Code 4123470132 and “BEST BY” date of OCT 08 12 H, because a very limited number of packages of Golden Dipt® Tempura Seafood Batter Mix with this date code contain an undeclared milk ingredient. The recalled cartons of Golden Dipt® Tempura Seafood Batter Mix were distributed to grocery stores in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin as well as internationally to the Cayman Islands, beginning on October 21, 2010. The affected product is packaged in 8 OZ cartons, and the date code is found printed in white ink on the bottom of the carton.

Allergy Alert: Garden of Life, LLC today announced that it is voluntarily recalling its Raw Vitamin C because these products may contain undeclared soy proteins. The recall extends to Garden of Life’s product bearing the name “VITAMIN CODE RAW VITAMIN C” prominently displayed on both the outer carton as well as the bottle label. All Lots of Raw Vitamin C distributed between March 2009 and January 2011 are affected by the recall.

Allergy Alert: Piccadilly Fine Foods (Santa Clara, CA)recalls approximately 775 pounds of Piccadilly Fine Foods Chicken and Mushroom Pastie (24 pkg/cs; Lot codes 213-10 through 365-10 and 001-11 through 056-11) because they may contain undeclared egg. USDA has posted a list of retail stores that carried the recalled product.

Food Safety Recall: Unilever United States, Inc. recalls Skippy® Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread and Skippy® Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter Spread (Best-If-Used-By Dates: MAY1612LR1, MAY1712LR1, MAY1812LR1, MAY1912LR1, MAY2012LR1 and MAY2112LR1, stamped on the lid of the jar), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled peanut butter was distributed to retail outlets in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Food Safety Recall: DeFranco and Sons (Los Angeles, CA) recalls bulk and consumer-packaged in-shell, hazelnut and mixed nut products containing hazelnuts because they may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. coli O157:H7). The recall was initiated after the nut products were linked to 7 illnesses in the states of Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Recalled product was shipped to stores in Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has confirmed E. coli O157:H7 contamination of in-shell hazelnuts (also known as filberts) collected from the home of an ill Minnesotan.

Food Safety Recall: Creekstone Farms Premium Beef (Arkansas City, KS) recalls approximately 14,158 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled products were produced on Feb. 22, 2011, and were shipped to firms in Ariz., Calif., Ga., Ind., Iowa, Mo., N.C., Ohio, Pa. and Wash. for further processing and/or distribution.

Food Safety Recall: Daiei Trading Co., Inc. (College Point NY 11356) recalls Gourmet Family Brand Large Mouth Smelt Komochi Shishamo because it has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The vacuum-packed product was imported from Japan and sold in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Florida, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina through retail stores.

Food Safety Recall: New Market Poultry (New Market, VA) recalls approximately 3,339 pounds of ice-packed, whole chicken products that may be adulterated due to leaking cooler condensate. The chicken products were produced on Feb. 23, 2011 and inadvertently shipped the same day to six distribution centers in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Farmington, NY.

Food Safety Recall: Taylor Farms Pacific (Tracy, CA) recalls approximately 64,000 pounds of chicken and pork products because the broccoli used in these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products are sold under the Raley’s, Taylor Farms and SYSCO brands and carry sell-by dates between February 7, 2011 and March 7, 2011. The products were shipped to retail distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. The products were sold in Pavilions (some Southern California stores), Raley’s (some Northern California stores), Safeway (some stores in Arizona, Southern California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Southern Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming) and Von’s (some stores in Arizona and California) supermarkets.

Food Safety Recall: Taylor Farms Pacific recalls specific broccoli items with Best if Used by from 2/7/11 to 3/7/11, because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled items were sold under a variety of brands (see FDA recall notice) in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington from February 7 to February 24.

Food Safety Recall: RemedyTeas recalls 20 lbs of Peppermint Organic Herbal Tea produced by Aromatics Inc., Basin City, WA, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The #137 Peppermint Organic Herbal Tea or #120 Tranquility Herbal Tea were distributed in the RemedyTeas retail store and through mail and internet orders. #137 Peppermint Organic Herbal Tea or #120 Tranquility Herbal Tea is sold measured to customers orders in retail stores and sold in 2 oz pre-packaged pouches by mail order or internet. There are no lot/batch identifying markings on the store or ecommerce packaging. Retail stock of #137 Peppermint Organic Herbal Tea was sold between January 18, 2011 and March 4, 2011. Retail stock of #120 Tranquility Herbal Tea was sold between February 22, 2011 and March 4, 2011.

Food Safety Recall: Teavana Corporation recalls 2,659 lbs of Peppermint Organic Herbal Tea produced by Aromatics Inc., Basin City, WA, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The Peppermint Organic Herbal Tea was distributed nationwide in Teavana retail stores and through mail and internet orders. The Peppermint Organic Herbal Tea is sold measured to customer’s orders in retail stores and sold in 2 oz pre-packaged pouches by mail order or internet. There are no lot/batch identifying markings on the store or ecommerce packaging. Retail store stock was sold between December 4, 2010 and February 16, 2011. Mail order & internet stock was sold between November 30, 2010 and February 16, 2011.

Food Safety Recall: Zweigle’s Inc. (Rochester, NY) recalls approximately 2,997 pounds of PRICE CHOPPER German Brand Bologna Made With Pork & Chicken (two 10-pound packages per case; produced Jan 5, 2011 and packaged Jan 7, 2011; Use by 03/08/11) that may be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin. The recalled product was sold in Price Chopper supermarkets throughout the Northeast USA.
