United States

  • Allergy Alert: Giant Eagle advises its customers that the manufacturer has recalled Healthy Times Brown Rice Baby Cereal (UPC 4868502188; Sell by 24 March 2013; Lot #13011 1505-1557), due to the presence of undeclared wheat.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Kroger Co. advises customers of Dillons, Baker’s Gerbes and Food4Less Fremont stores that Green Hills Organic Whole Milk (64-oz container) has been recalled due to levels of alkaline phosphatase above the standard for Grade A pasteurized milk. Elevated alkaline phosphatase levels are an indicator of possible inadequate pasteurization or possible cross-contamination of pasteurized milk with unpasteurized milk.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for recall of Boneless Oven Roasted Chicken Breast announced by House of Raeford Farms due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Outbreak Alert: Mississippi State Department of Health reports that 59 patrons and employees of Don Julio Mexican Restaurant (Corinth, MS) are confirmed to have been infected with Salmonella. The District Health Officer describes this outbreak as “an isolated problem with this particular restaurant” that does not appear to be an issue with a food producer or supplier.
  • FDA Warning Letters: FDA issues warning letters to the following companies due to serious violations of the seafood HACCP regulation: Blue Water Connection Seafood Corp. (Hialeah, FL), Sushi Avenue, Inc. (Eagan, MN), Crown O’Maine Organic Cooperative (Vassalboro, ME), and H.R. Beals and Sons, Inc. (Southwest Harbor, ME).
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns B.A. Howie, Inc. (Brooklyn, NY) that an August 2011 inspection of the company’s New Jersey pickle manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Human Food (CGMP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Big D Ranch, Inc. (Meridian, ID) that an August 2011 inspection of the company’s warehouse/packing facility revealed number of objectionable conditions and practices, which cause the foods at your facility to be adulterated within the meaning of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in that they were prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated with filth or rendered injurious to health.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Quinault Indian Nation (Taholah, WA) that an April/May 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing and low-acid canned food manufacturing facility found serious deviations from the Low-Acid Canned Food regulations and the Good Manufacturing Practices regulations.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Fresh Direct Foods (2010) Ltd. recalls Get Fresh Veggie Tray (1.93kg; All best before dates up to and including 11DE18) due to the presence of undeclared egg. The recalled product was distributed in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
  • Food Safety Recall: Bos Smoked Fish Inc. (Woodstock, ON) recalls Bos brand refrigerated vacuum packed smoked fish products (variable weight packaging; no Best before dates; all species and flavors with “Keep Refrigerated” on the package), because the products may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Parmalat Canada Inc. recalls certain Compliments, No Name, Selection, BD, Co-op, and Co-op Gold cheese products (500g and 1kg sizes; all codes), because the products may be contaminated with glass fragments. The recalled cheese products were distributed nationally. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Whole Foods Market advises its Canadian customers that Fontaine Santé products, recalled by the manufacturer due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, were sold in Whole Foods Market retail locations in Canada. Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Kiss Kiss Food Supplies Pty Ltd. recalls certain Kiss Kiss Pastizzi bakery goods (500g bags containing 12 pieces; All best before dates up to and including 24 SEP 12), due to the presence of undeclared soy. The affected products include Bonza Bacon and Ricotta, Cheeky Curry Chicken, Funky Fetta, Perfect Pizza, Playful Pea and Bacon, Super Spinach and Ricotta, Wicked Vegetable, Raging Ricotta, and Awesome Apple, and were sold in IGA supermarkets, Farmer Jacks supermarkets and independent gourmet supermarkets in West Australia.
  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall (Australia): Ozbrite Pty Ltd. recalls Sparkling White Teeth (22% Carbamide Peroxide) value packs (Batch No. 1206; Expiry 06/2013), because product contains a concentration of carbamide peroxide in excess of the recognised safe limit of 18% w/w. The recalled product was sold by Green Coffee Australia, and Ozbrite Pty Ltd. and was available nationally.
  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall (Australia): Ozbrite Pty Ltd. recalls 35% Sparkling White Teeth whitening pen, because the product contains a concentration of carbamide peroxide in excess of the recognised safe limit of 18% w/w. The recalled product was sold by Ozbrite Pty Ltd. and was available nationally.

United States

  • Allergy Alert: Silva Sausage Co (Gilroy, CA) recalls Neto’s Mexican Chorizo 4/1 (5-lb vacuum packs; Est 6086; Item #18062; Lut codes 11279, 11293, 11304, 11321, 11333, or 11341) due to the presence of undeclared wheat. The recalled sausages were produced between Oct. 1, 2011 and Dec. 9, 2011 and distributed for institutional use in Santa Clara, CA.
  • Food Safety Recall: Pacific International Marketing recalls Pacific brand Cilantro (60 bunches, 30 bunches, and 20 x 3-bunch sleeves; Carton codes 19 78 111411, 19 78 111811, 19 84 111811, 19 94 111811, 19 78 111911, 19 84 111911, 19 94 111911, and 19 78 112111), after FDA found Salmonella in a sample of the product. The recalled Pacific Cilantro originates from Salt River Farming (Phoenix, AZ) and was distributed through retailers in California, Arizona, Massachusetts, New jersey, Indiana, South Carolina and Missouri. The source of the contamination is unknown.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Kroger advises its customers that Fair Oaks cheeses, which were recalled by the manufacturer due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, were sold in Kroger stores in Indiana (except Evansville and Southwest Indiana), Illinois, and Eastern Missouri.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Kawartha Dairy Ltd. recalls Kawartha Moose Tracks Ice Cream (1.5L; Code #1241; UPC 0 62229 08913 6), because the product was labeled incorrectly as Chocolate Ice Cream and contains undeclared peanuts.
  • Allergy Alert: Private Stock Sauce Company recalls Private Stock Chef Robert Cabernet Chili Mustard (300mL; Best before 05 OC 12) and Private Stock Chef Robert Wasabi Lime Mustard (280mL; Best before o5 OC 12), because the products contain undeclared sulfites.
  • Food Safety Recall: Ramaker’ Imports (St. Catherines, ON) recalls Bos brand Herring Fillets – Natural (various weight packages; no Best before date; sold from September 2011 to December 7, 2011), because the product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled fish was sold by Ramaker’s Imports, but may also have been available from other retailers.
  • Food Safety Recall: Greenwood Mushroom Farm (Ashburn, ON) recalls Windmill Farms Triple Washed Sliced Mushrooms (227g/8oz and 454g/16oz; Code WBB-MA 2011/DE/10), Compliments Sliced Mushrooms (227g/8oz; Code WBB-MA 2011/DE/10) and Longo’s White Mushroom Sliced (227g/8oz; Code WBB-MA 2011/DE/10), because the mushrooms may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were sold in retail stores in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Aliments Fontaine Santé Inc. (Ville Saint-Laurent, QC) recalls 29 different Fontaine Santé salads (various sizes; Lot numbers 315-339, inclusive; Best before dates up to and including 2011 DE 26), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products. The recalled salads were distributed in Québec and Ontario, and may have been sold in other Canadian provinces and territories. CFIA and the manufacturer are warning the public and retailers not to sell, use or consume the affected salads.

  • Food Safety Recall: Flying Food Group (Lawrenceville, GA) updates its recall to include two additional products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The additional recalled products are Turkey Quarter Pounder (7.38-oz pkg; Sell Thru dates of 10/11/11-11/30/11) and Turkey Quarter Pounder with Tomatoes (9.05-oz pkg; Sell Thru dates of 10/11/11-11/30/11). These additional recalled products were made for Race Trac and were distributed to retail outlets in Georgia only.
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: Procter & Gamble recalls Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy Dry Dog Food (7.0-lb (Code Date 12784177I6), 8.0-lb (Code Dates 12794177D2 & 12794177D3) and 17.5-lb bags (Code Dates 12794177K1 & 12794177K2); Use By or Expiration Dates of February 5 or February 6, 2013), due to aflatoxin levels above the acceptable limit. The recalled pet food was distributed to a “limited number of retailers” in the eastern USA (AL, CT, DE, FL, GA, LA, MD, ME, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, SC, VA).
  • Food Recall/Withdrawal: Food City reports that several varieties of Tribe Hummus have been recalled or withdrawn from the marketplace. Please refer to the Food City web site for a list of affected products.
  • Dietary Supplement Enforcement Action: At the request of FDA, U.S. Marshals seized raw materials imported by Infinity Marketing Group, Inc., because the materials contained ephedrine alkaloids, a family of compounds that were banned by FDA since 2004 for use in dietary supplements.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1704): Undeclared milk ingredient in dark chocolate with salt flower from Slovenia; distributed to Australia, Austria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland and the USA.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (Japan): Meiji recalls 400,000 cans of Meiji Step baby formula, because the product contains a small amount of radioactive cesium-134 and cesium-137. The product was sold only in Japan.
  • Food Safety Alert (China): Deliberate contamination of a yoghurt drink made by Coca-Cola is blamed for the death of one child and the poisoning of three other people. It’s not yet know what poison was contained in the Minute Maid Pulpy Milky beverage, but the investigation is being treated as a criminal case. Tens of thousands of bottles of the beverage have been removed from store shelves in Jilin, and several other cities have stopped selling the drink.
  • Outbreak Alert (Guam): At least 21 individuals were treated for symptoms of food poisoning after attending various functions. The common link among the victims was consumption of cream puffs from Celebrity Bakery.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1716): Escherichia coli in chilled clams from France, with raw material from the United Kingdom; distributed to Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Switzerland and Thailand.
