United States

  • Allergy Alert:  Allied Imports Inc. (Brooklyn, NY) recalls Dried Potato (12-oz/340g plastic bag; UPC 6 43719 12507 9; Product of China; No lot/date codes), due to the presence high levels of undeclared sulfites. The product was distributed in the immediate New York City area.
  • Medical/Surgical Kit Safety Recall Update: North American Rescue, LLC (Greer, SC) recalls NAR Surgical Crichothyroidotomy Kit – Crickit® – due to the potential contamination with the bacterium Elizabethkingia meningoseptica of the povidone iodine prep pads, manufactured by Triad Group. This is a follow up to the recall initiated on May 5, 2011 by North American Rescue. The Crickit® Kit also may be found inside the NAR Medic Trauma Pack Kit, available in 4 colors. The recalled kits were distributed from 4/30/09 to 4/22/11 in the USA, Switzerland, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Austria, Norway, England, Estonia, Japan, South Africa and Canada.
  • Outbreak Alert (Cruise Ship): 142 passengers and 8 crew members on board the P & O Cruises ship Aurora developed norovirus gastroenteritis while on a voyage that  began on January 4, 2012 and terminated in San Francisco on January 26, 2012.
  • Outbreak Alert (Cruise Ship): 248 passengers and 11 crew members on board the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ship Voyager of the Seas developed symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea while on a voyage that began on January 28, 2012 and terminated in New Orleans on February 4th. The causative agent has not yet been identified.
  • Outbreak Alert (Cruise Ship): 364 (or more) passengers and 32 crew members on board the Princess Cruises ship Crown Princess developed symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea while on a voyage that began on January 28, 2012 and terminated in Ft. Lauderdale on February 4th. The causative agent has not yet been identified.
  • Outbreak Alert (Update): The Pierre, South Dakota outbreak linked to the Pierre-Mitchell high school boys’ basketball game held on January 31st was due to Clostridium perfringens food poisoning, according to a news release issued today by the South Dakota Department of Health. Questionnaires completed voluntarily by outbreak victims strongly implicated tacos as the source of the illnesses that struck approximately 50 people.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Veggie Favour Food Store recalls Veggie Favour brand Veggie Large Shrimp Style Soy Product (300g; No lot/date codes), due to the presence of undeclared wheat. The recalled product was sold in British Columbia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Milford Bay Trout Farm Inc. (Bracebridge, ON) recalls Milford Bay Trout Farm Inc. Smoked Trout Filet (variable weight vacuum packages; Best before February 9, 2012 and February 10, 2012; Lot code 30644-1), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled smoked trout filets were distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Livno Meats (Hornby, ON) recalls Livno Meats Dry Sausage (200g vacuum package; Batch #4; Packed on DE/11/28 OR packed in plastic bag per customer order and sold from December 28, 2011 through January 21, 2012), due to possible contamination with Salmonella. The recalled sausage was sold only from the Livno Meats retail store in Hornby, ON.
  • Medical/Surgical Kit Safety Recall Update: North American Rescue, LLC (Greer, SC) recalls NAR Surgical Crichothyroidotomy Kit – Crickit® – due to the potential contamination with the bacterium Elizabethkingia meningoseptica of the povidone iodine prep pads, manufactured by Triad Group. This is a follow up to the recall initiated on May 5, 2011 by North American Rescue. The Crickit® Kit also may be found inside the NAR Medic Trauma Pack Kit, available in 4 colors. The recalled kits were distributed from 4/30/09 to 4/22/11 in the USA, Switzerland, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Austria, Norway, England, Estonia, Japan, South Africa and Canada.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Abond Corporation (Lachine, QC) recalls Honey Bunny Infant Terry Bib with Pocket (Manufactured in China; Style #BB52; UPC 773299000524), because the front pocket and the back lining of the bib contain phthalates in excess of the allowable limit.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Tech4Kids Inc. (Mississauga, ON) recalls Splat Shot – Marvel Spider Sense Spiderman, Splat Ball – Marvel Spider Sense Spiderman, and Splat Shot Disc – Marvel Spider Sense Spiderman, because the product contains the toxic substance, bronopol. The recalled toys were manufactured by JS Vision Ltd./Miracle Toys Ltd, Kowloon, Hong Kong and sold in Canada from November 2010 to January 2012.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Netherlands): Culina Foods bvba recalls Dress It Up Mustard/Dill Dressing (Expiration dates 17/02/2012, 09/04/2012 and 21/05/2012), because a production error occurred which may result in fermentation in the bottle, causing the bottle cap to blow off.
  • Food Safety Recall (Sweden): ICA recalls ICA Minced Beef (1600g and 2500g; Product of Ireland; Use by dates of February 6 and 7 and of February 5 and 6, respectively), after routine testing discovered Salmonella in the products.
  • Food Safety Recall (Switzerland): Migros recalls five Cornatur Quorn brand products, because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were available for sale since January 2012. Please refer to the recall notice for full details.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Dr. August Oetker KG Foods recalls Chopped Hazelnuts (100g; Best before 01/2013; Batch #1:13-L002-L003), due to contamination with metal filament fragments.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Spain): Ferrer Farma, S.A. recalls Etoposido Ferrer Farma 20mg/ml Solution for Injection (1 vial of 200mg/10mL; Lot 96883306; Expiry 01/2014; Manufactured by EBEWE Pharma GmbH NFg. KG of Austria), because of a defect in the capsule seal in certain vials.

  • Outbreak Alert (Russia): Fifteen young gymnasts returning from a sporting event in Bratsk (Irkutsk region) developed food poisoning symptoms during their journey. The children were hospitalized for observation.
  • Food Safety Notification/Outbreak Alert (EU #2012.0178): Foodborne outbreak suspected to be caused by watermelon from Brazil; distributed to Ireland and the United Kingdom.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0186): Hazelnut traces in chocolate paste from Belgium; distributed to Belgium and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0187): Aflatoxins in organic broken white rice from Pakistan; distributed to Belgium.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Food Safety urges the public not to consume Shinshu Enokitake Gold-Needle Mushrooms (100g and 200g; Production date February 1 and 2, 2012; Produced by JA Kitashinshu Miyuki, Nagano Prefecture, Japan), because the products may contain glass fragments.
  • Chinese Herbal Medicine Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health warns the public to stop using Flos Campsis, purchased from Cheong Kee Medicine Co in Yen Chow Street, Sham Shui Po, because the product may be mislabeled.
  • Illegal Health Product Safety Alert (Singapore): The Singapore Health Sciences Authority alters the public to a series of serious adverse health events related to the consumption of illegal sexual enhancement health products.

  • Outbreak Alert (Algeria): Seventy-four cases of hepatitis A have been confirmed during January 2012 in Constantine. Most of the victims are school children.
  • Outbreak Alert (Congo DR): Twenty-three cholera cases, including two deaths, have been reported in Kasindi-Lubiriya since the beginning of 2012.
  • Outbreak Alert (India): More than 70 people were rushed to hospital with symptoms of food poisoning after attending a wedding function in Shamli town (Prabhudhnanag). All are reported to be in stable condition.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (Australia): Queensland Health is warning the public about an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis, a highly contagious parasitic disease that is a cause of acute diarrhea, especially in young children. Fifty-one lab-confirmed cases have been reported in the past month; in a typical year, fewer than 20 cases are seen.
  • Boil Water Alert (Australia): Residents along some parts of the New South Wales Central Coast have been advised to boil their drinking water after E. coli was found in the water supply.

  • Food Safety Recall: Greencore USA (Cincinnati, OH) recalls Thornton’s Quick Café Chef Salad (5.6-oz plastic containers; Enjoy By date through 2/4/2012; Est. P-38518), because the salads were prepared using eggs that have been recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled Chef Salad was sold at Thorntons stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
  • Food Safety Recall: Allison’s Gourmet Kitchens (Moore, OK) recalls various prepared salads containing cooked eggs that were recalled by Michael Foods, Inc. due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled prepared salads were sold to retail stores and food service customers in Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Kansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, Tennessee and Missouri.   • Food Safety Recall: GH Foods SW (Houston, TX) recalls Fresh Garden Highway Cobb Salad (7.5-oz plastic containers; Sell By dates through 2/6/2012), because the salads were prepared using eggs that have been recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled Cobb Salads were sold at Kroger Stores in Texas.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Bedford Laboratories (Bedford, OH) recalls Acetylcysteine Solution, USP (Manufactured for Roxane Laboratories, Inc.) 20% (30mL/vial; Lot 1877093; Exp. June 2013), after a glass particle was found in a single vial.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Alert: Pedinol Pharmacal Inc. announces health advisory for Gris-PEG (griseofulvin ultramicrosize) 125mg and 250mg, which was packaged for Pedinol by Novartis Consumer Health in Lincoln, Nebraska. Pedinol advises healthcare professionals, pharmacists and patients that, due to problems occurring when the Gris-PEG was packaged and labeled, tablets from one product type may have carried over into packaging of another product. This could result in a stray pill of one medicine ending up in the bottle of another product.   • Outbreak Alert Update: The number of people sickened by Campylobacter after drinking raw milk from The Family Cow dairy farm has risen to 35 confirmed cases in Pennsylvania (28), Maryland (4) and New Jersey (1), according to a report released by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Maryland has found the pathogen in two bottles of raw milk produced at the farm. The Family Cow dairy farm voluntarily suspended sale of milk on January 31st, and health departments are advising consumers to discard any raw milk purchased from the dairy since January 1, 2012.
  • Outbreak Alert: The South Dakota Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of diarrhea – suspected to be food-related – linked to a Tuesday evening boys’ high school basketball game in Pierre.
  • Outbreak Alert: South Carolina health officials are investigating a suspected norovirus outbreak at the Lila Doyle Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Facility in Oconee County. The nursing home, which has been closed to new admissions until the outbreak has been contained, is owned and operated by the Oconee Medical Center.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. recalls Kirkland Signature Banana Loaves, Red Velvet Cupcakes, and Mix and Match Muffins (Best before February 4th, 2012), because the products may contain pieces of white plastic. The recalled baked goods were produced in the East Winnipeg Costco warehouse between January 31st and February 1st, 2012 inclusive. Baked goods produced at other Costco locations are not affected by this recall.
  • Food Safety Recall: New Horizon Co-Operative Ltd. recalls Co-op Lean Ground Beef Ground from Canadian Trim (various weight packages; Packed JA 11, 12) due to contamination with unspecified extraneous matter. The recalled ground beef was distributed in Alberta.

Europe

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Myanmar): More than 30 children at the Pajau Refugee Camp in Kachin have contracted cholera and one child has died., according to workers with the Relief Action Network for IDP and Refugees. Children and the elderly in other camps along the Sino-Burmese border also have been affected. The refugee camps lack both adequate safe drinking water and toilet facilities. The total number of people suffering from cholera is not known.
  • Outbreak Alert (Angola): The municipality of Massangano Cambambe has been hit with an outbreak of cholera-like diarrheal illness. Thirteen people were hospitalized.

Australia and New Zealand

Latin America and the Caribbean

  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Argentina): The Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria ordered the seizure and destruction of 1,340 kilograms of ham in San Fernando (Buenos Aires Province), after determining that the package labels were counterfeit, rendering the products unfit for human consumption.
  • Outbreak Alert (Mexico): Health authorities have quarantined two schools in Altamira (Tamaulipas), after two cases of hepatitis A were confirmed. Additional cases are under investigation.

  • Allergy Alert: Paleteria La Super (Yakima, WA) recalls Paleteria La Super brand Nut, Esquimal and Pina Colada flavored ice cream bars, because the bars may contain undeclared walnuts, milk, or coconut, respectively. The recalled ice cream bars were distributed to retail stores in the Yakima area.
  • Allergy Alert: YoCream International, Inc. (Portland, OR) recalls Nonfat NY Cheesecake Frozen Yogurt Mix (half-gallon carton; Item 92147; Lot codes 2990, 3200, 3470, 3520, 0391, 0461, 0591, 0731, 0871, 0961, 1131, 1171, 1231, 1291, 1541, 1661, 1811, 1921, 2061, and 2131), because the product contains undeclared eggs.The recalled yogurt mix was supplied to distributors and food service operators throughout the USA and was supplied to one US-based export customer. The product is available to consumers primarily through frozen yogurt shops and other retail establishments that serve frozen yogurt.
  • Allergy Alert: H-E-B recalls Pretzel Logic 6-count and Single Cookies (sold at all Texas Central Market stores), because the products contain undeclared pecans.
  • Food Safety Recall: Buehler’s Fresh Foods announces recall of Pillsbury Grands Jr. Golden Layers Buttermilk Biscuits (5 ct pkg with Best if used by 13 OCT, 14 OCT; 10 ct pkg with Best if used by 14 OCT). No reason given for the recall.
  • Food Safety Recall: Buffalo Bill’s Brewery recalls Buffalo Bill’s Brewery Orange Blossom Cream Ale (6-pack bottles; shipped between January and July 2011), because fermentation may cause caps to pop or glass bottles to rupture. The recalled Cream Ale was sold at HyVee stores.
  • Food Safety Alert: The Kansas Department of Agriculture warns consumers in Northeast Kansas that meat was stolen from a custom meat locker in Beattie and may be offered for sale in the region. Approximately 250 pounds of ground beef, 100 to 150 pounds of bacon, three custom hogs, a quarter of beef, several hundred dollars worth of beef jerky, 20 to 25 pounds of an experimental batch of chili cheese dogs and a gun were stolen.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that the double outbreak of Salmonella Altona and Salmonella Johannesburg illnesses linked to contact with infected chicks and ducklings has continued to grow. Sixty-five people in 20 states have been sickened by Salmonella Altona, and 27 people in 15 states were infected with Salmonella Johannesburg.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Sugar Plum Foods (White House, TN) that a May 2011 inspection of the company’s acidified food facility revealed serious violations of Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 108, Emergency Permit Control; 114, Acidified Foods; and, 110, Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Human Food.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Muddypaws Cheesecake Co. (St. Louis Park, MN) that a May 2011 inspection of the company’s processing facility revealed significant deviations from the food labeling regulations.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The North West Company International, Inc. (Anchorage, AK) that an April-May 2011 inspection of the company’s food storage facility revealed serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for manufacturing, packing, or holding human food.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Schneider’s Fish & Seafood Corp. (Cheektowaga, NY) that a December 2010 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.

  • Allergy Alert: Pan Asia Food Co. Ltd. recalls Chungjungwon Sunchang Gochujang (Hot Petter Paste), 1 kg, due to the presence of undeclared soy.
  • Allergy Alert: Seoul Trading Corporation (BC) recalls Chungjungwon Sunchang Gochujang (Hot Petter Paste), 500g and 1kg, due to the presence of undeclared soy.
  • Allergy Alert: T-Brothers Food and Trading Ltd recalls Chungjungwon Sunchang Gochujang (Hot Petter Paste), 500g and 1kg, due to the presence of undeclared soy.
  • Allergy Alert: Seoul Trading Corporation (ON) recalls Choripdong Enzyme, 454g, due to the presence of undeclared wheat.
  • Allergy Alert: Korea Food Trading recalls Chungjungwon Sunchang Gochujang (Hot Petter Paste), 500g and 1kg, due to the presence of undeclared soy.
  • Allergy Alert: Seoul Trading Corporation (ON) recalls Chungjungwon Sunchang Gochujang (Hot Pepper Paste – Hot Pepper Bean Paste, Mild), 1 kg, due to the presence of undeclared soy.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Solhjulet A/S recalls Nagel tofu Crack Sausages (250g pkg; Best before 10.10.11; product of Germany) due to the presence of undeclared celery.
  • Allergy Alert (UK & Ireland): Onken alerts consumers to an issue on their Strawberry, Peach and Summer Berries Wholegrain Yogurts packaging. These products contain wholegrains such as barley, rye, oats and wheat and are therefore not gluten free. This is clear from the ingredients list and allergen warning, however there is a gluten free icon on the packaging which is incorrect.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): La Société Patrelle recalls 4 ‘Oclock chez Auchan et Mutant snack with apple sauce, peach beverage and cookies (Lot 139110; Use by 01-2012), because of fermentation in the apple sauce compartment.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Stryhns A/S recalls Langelaender sausage, and Stryhns Smoked Sausage (Best before 8/9/2011 through 16/9/2011) and Sausage Man Langelaender (Best before 7/2/2012 through 15/2/2012) after E. coli was found n the drinking water from the municipal waterworks on Langeland.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Lidl Denmark K/S recalls Dried, Sliced Banana Chips (200g; Expiry 05/04/2012), due to the presence of high levels of PAH, a potential carcinogen.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.1133): Dioxins in paprika powder from China, via the Netherlands; distributed to Belgium.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1134): Trifluralin in frozen pagasius fillets from Vietnam; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1137): Presence of bacterial inhibitor in pasteurized milk in tank from Germany; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1140): Campylobacter spp. in chilled whole chicken from Germany; distributed to Denmark.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2011.1144): Unauthorised substances vinpocetine and evodiamine in food supplement from the United States, via Austria and via Hungary; distributed to Germany.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1146): Salmonella Derby in dog chews from Mexico; distributed to Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1148): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled silver scabbardfish from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1149): Excess sulphite in frozen raw shrimps from Senegal; distributed to Spain.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.1150): Arsenic in palm kernel expeller from Malaysia; distributed to Ireland and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1151): Damaged packaging and poor hygienic condition of baked clams from Vietnam, via the Netherlands; distributed to Spain.

  • Food Safety Recall (Israel): General Mills recalls Pillsbury brand chocolate, marble, and vanilla cake mixes (Expiration dates from June 10, 2012 through August 20, 2012), after pieces of plastic were found in the products
