  • Allergy Alert: Bay Valley Foods (Oak Brook, IL) recalls Naturally Fresh® Roasted & Glazed Pecan Pieces Salad Toppings (3.5-oz pouch-type package; UPC (0)7653905520(0); Best by 07 APR 13 and 08 APR 13), because some of the packages may contain undeclared almonds. The recalled product was distributed between June 26, 2012, and August 22, 2012, in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas, including in Kroger stores (Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Knoxville, Tennessee, Greater Memphis, TN, Arkansas, Mississippi and Western Kentucky, Texas and Louisiana) and in Publix.
  • Food Safety Withdrawal: Protica, Inc. (Whitehall, PA) withdraws Body Choice Protein Shots (3-oz vial; Manufacture date Dec 20, 2011; Lot #PP 3541 2924), Nutritional Resources Protein Wave gelatin (6-oz cup; Manufacture date May 03 2012; Lot #PP 1242 6123) ProBalance Protein to Go French Vanilla Latte (2.5-oz bottle; Manufacture dates 9/8/2011, 10/11/2011, 10/18/2011, 12/6/2011, 2/13/2012, 4/2/2012, 4/4/2012, 4/11/2012, 4/24/2012, 5/1/2012, 5/8/2012, 6/8/2012) and Protein to Go Milk Chocolate Shake (2.5-oz bottle; Manufacture dates 2/9/12, 2/13/12, 2/16/12, 4/12/12, 4/25/12, 5/3/12, 5/8/12), because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The products were distributed nationally through retail and direct mail.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: North American Produce Sales (Vancouver, BC) recalls Mangoes (Product of Mexico; Individual fruit bearing PLU #4959; Sold between July 12th and August 14th), because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup. Several confirmed illnesses are associated with the consumption of the mangoes. The recalled fruit may have been was sold at various retail stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fine Choice Foods Ltd. recalls Sum-m! Crispy Vegetable Spring Rolls (Lot #3045; Production date July 11th; Expiry date August 22nd), due to two reports of a customer finding small pieces of aluminum in the product. The recalled Spring Rolls were sold at Costco Wholesale outlets in Canada.
  • Outbreak Alert (PEI): CBC reports that the PEI Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness – suspected to be due to norovirus – at the Stanhope Beach Resort and Conference Centre. Approximately 60 people complained of nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps or diarrhea after attending events at the resort. Test results are pending.

Europe

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Proprietary Medicine Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health asks the public not to buy or consume the unregistered proprietary Chinese medicine “Quan Xie Jin Gu Tong,” as it may contain the undeclared Western drug ingredients diclofenac, piroxicam and prednisone acetate.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1220): Benzalkonium chloride in passion fruit juice powder from Germany; distributed to Denmark, Germany, Japan and Sweden.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): More than 110 residents of the Darfield area have developed gastroenteritis after drinking contaminated water. The Selwyn District Council issued a boil-water notice after E. coli was found in some parts of the Waimakariri River. Six of the outbreak victims have been confirmed to be suffering from Campylobacter infections.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA updates retail distribution list for various meatballs and other frozen, ready-to-eat meat and poultry products recalled by Buona Vita, Inc. due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Outbreak Alert: An outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea has struck 99 out of 1918 passengers and 12 of 836 crew members on Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess. The ship is scheduled to arrive in Manhattan, NY on July 20th and will be met by two CDC Vessel Sanitation Program environmental health officers and an epidemiologist. The cause of the outbreak is not yet known.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Sobeys Quebec Inc. recalls Earth Greens brand Organic Italian Blend Salad (198g plastic clamshell package; Product of USA; UPC 8 18431 00107 3; Best Before 2012 JL 13; Lot code 2217915MI), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled salad is a product of Misionero Vegetables (Gonzales, California) and was imported by Sobeys Quebec Inc. (Montreal, QC) for distribution in Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario and Nunavut.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Alert/Recall (Hong Kong): The Department of Health advises that Westone Laboratories, Inc. (USA) has recalled Oto-Ease® Ear Lubricant, due to potential contamination with pathogenic bacteria and mold. Some of the recalled product may have been exported to Hong Kong. Consumers should stop using this product immediately and consult their healthcare providers.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): NZ Herald reports that two elderly women died after contracting Listeria, found in meat supplied to the Hawkes Bay Hospital. Two other patients also diagnosed with Listeria infections. It’s unclear whether the patients had contracted the illnesses while in hospital. The meat was recalled by Bay Cuisine Ltd. on July 16th, due to potential Listeria contamination. Bay Cuisine supplied its meat products to Hawkes Bay Hospital’s kitchen and cafeteria, in addition to the Mad Butcher and Preston shop chains.

  • Animal Feed Safety Recall: PMI Nutrition International recalls certain varieties of AquaMax™, Mazuri® and LabDiet® feed products, due to the potential for elevated levels of vitamin D. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products. The recalled products were manufactured at the Richmond, Indiana feed plant and distributed nationwide in the USA and exported to Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Mexico, Cambodia, Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Chile, and the United Kingdom from April 2, 2012 through May 8, 2012.

  • Animal Feed Safety Recall: PMI Nutrition International recalls certain varieties of AquaMax™, Mazuri® and LabDiet® feed products, due to the potential for elevated levels of vitamin D. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products. The recalled products were manufactured at the Richmond, Indiana feed plant and distributed nationwide in the USA and exported to Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Mexico, Cambodia, Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Chile, and the United Kingdom from April 2, 2012 through May 8, 2012.
  • Natural Health Product Safety Advisory: Fu Fang Zaoren Jiaonang (Manufactured by Dong Phuong Trading Co), an unauthorized natural health product promoted for anxiety and/or insomnia, has been removed from sale after testing by Health Canada confirmed the presence of the ingredient L-tetrahydropalmatine that could cause damage to vital organs such as the liver, most notably in pregnant women. The product was sold at Fu Ji Herbal, a retail store in Markham, Ontario.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Aldi recalls Whole Fresh Chicken, Chilled (Product of Germany; Best before 10-07-2012), after Campylobacter is detected in the product. The recalled product was sold in Aldi stores in Zealand.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health warns the public not to buy or consume the slimming product known as Conting Qianweisu Slimming Herbs Capsule, as it may contain the banned Western pharmaceutical ingredient sibutramine. The implicated product was purchased outside of Hong Kong.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0999): Undeclared sulphite in champagne from France; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1000): Salmonella enteritidis in frozen poultry meat preparation from Poland; distributed to Slovakia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1002): Mercury in swordfish from Spain; distributed to Italy.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (New Zealand): Waikato Valley Chocolate Ltd. recalls Waikato Valley Forest Fruit Chocolate Bar (200g block; Best before 18.12.2013), because the product contains undeclared almonds. The recalled product was sold exclusively through The Warehouse stores nationwide, between June 26th and July 12th, 2012.
